Treaty of the Confines; Article One
“Wherein the Children of the Ancients shall reside within the areas assigned to them by the Human race, also known as the Newly Come. The Children of the Ancients shall make no move amongst themselves to end these restrictions or increase the size of the Confines save for by acceptance of the Watching Council of the Newly Come.”

You had settled into a defensive position in the woods, high atop a ridge looking into a deep ravine. It was beautiful country up here, and had you a chance to pause, you might have enjoyed the splendor, the scent of the trees and the sound of the birds. But for now, the scent of the trees made you ill and the sound of the birds just made you hungry.
You looked over at Donovan and shook your head. There was no way he had been there at the Treaty signing, no way in the world. Donovan caught your glance and smiled, “Thing are different for us, Kid. We age slower, much slower. As a result, we also die slower and are born slower. You were put to earth about a year ago. You’re lucky we waited around for you. The others didn’t want to.”
He looked back over his shoulder, keeping his voice low as the others in your group glanced over at the pair of you, a few silent nods were made and then Donovan relaxed down beside you. “I’m a sorcerer, Kid. I can make magic happen and do pretty much anything I want with the power of the earth and sky. There are limits, there are rules, but suffice to say, I’m not a bad friend to have. Either in a fight or if your cabin is just plain dirty. I’ve been around for a long time, I’m one of the oldest ones here, other than the Ancients. You stick with me, we’ll make it through.”
You weren’t quite convinced of all that. From what you’d heard, these Newly Come had figured out tricks of their own. Odd, wasn’t it? You’d at one point been a Human, but being here, within the Confines, and being what you are now, you think of them only as the Newly Come. Your blood that was coursing through your veins has dried up, but the memories left by the one who buried you began to burn strong. You remember the Newly Come, their cruelty, their ability to just keep making more of themselves in no time at all. And the urge to hunt and to kill becomes nearly overwhelming. Donovan looks back over at you, and it’s as if he can read your mind.
A flash of his hand and your thoughts shift from murdering the Newly Come in their beds to that bird up above you. The chirping was bothering you. With a violent leap straight into the air, you grab the bird from its perch and before it knows what is happening, you have silenced its song forever.
