Gauss Cannon (= Coilgun): A series of magnetic rings, which each pull a magnetic object in turn, accelerating with each ring.

Railgun:Two 'bars', with an electric force running between them through the projectile, causing an electromagnetic force pointing out of the barrel.

that;s what a google search yeilded

so they're basically the same thing? A gun that uses magnets to fire a projectile?

Railgun is an overloaded term. Are you think of the type of railgun that is a giant gun being moved by railroad?

    No.

I'm talking about the other kind.

The kind with two "rails" with an electric current running between them.

    what

    yes they are

electricity runs throgh them to make the gun into an electromagnet

that is how a railgun works

Yes but the rails themselves are not magnets.

    Until the projectile is inserted.

Then the whole thing is a magnet.

This flow of current makes the railgun act like an electromagnet, creating a powerful magnetic field in the region of the rails up to the position of the projectile.

So it does not, as it were, "contain" any magnets.

A railgun consists of two parallel metal rails (hence the name) connected to an electrical power supply.

(Note: Jordyn really likes the Monkees. (I thought about spelling that 'Monkeys,' but she probably would divorce me for that.)

So we were at the record store, and she was looking at the first volume of DVDs of the Monkees. And I walk up and go "Oh wow, they had a show?"

And she got this look on her face and started breathing all angry.

    It was pretty funny.

I remember watching that as a kid
Sometimes they would show an episode from towards the end of the series run that was almost
    all concert footage
I thought it was pretty boring then
    I'd probably like it now
