Obama will be cool, rational and collected, Democrats will trip over each other to applaud him, Republicans will heckle and sneer. At least one call of "Show us the Birth Certificate" will be heard during a pause in the speech.
They really should do this thing earlier than 9PM ET.
And as I was saying in the Congress thread, I cannot wait to hear Rep Ryan's well-reasoned rebuttal that will totally not at all involve putting the US in dire financial straits because OMGSPENDINGDEFICITCHINADEBTFORTHECHILDREN!

I wish we could have rebuttals to rebuttals. Just a list of "Oh, and by the way, all of what Paul Ryan said is a lie"
I'm rather glad it's 9pm ET. That means it's 6 PT, which means I'll actually be home from work in time to see it, as opposed to it airing during my evening commute, like most shit does.
So it looks like the Republicans are going to snub the Democract's offer to mix the seating up rather than sit according to party. They suspect a "trap" I shit you not.

At the strike of the clock, every Dem will turn to the left and stab the Pub sitting next to them?

Considering they fell right into it, I'd say they were right.

It looks like the Senate more or less embraced the idea. I think the only real standout is McConnell and he's posturing because he's afraid of getting primaried in 2014. It's been amusing over the past two days to see which Senators will attend with each other. Getting the proper date is hard.
THe House doesn't really seem to have gotten on board with the idea, though.

Seriously.
Dems - "Here's an easy chance to at least look bi-partisan."
Repubs - "Fuck that and fuck you."

One congressman said something along the lines of "it's an attempt to silence the Republican opposition."
Well, Duh. It's a hell of a lot harder to scream out "you lie" when you're surrounded by people who are perfectly happy to sell you out to the press.
Obama will be cool, rational and collected, Democrats will trip over each other to applaud him, Republicans will heckle and sneer. At least one call of "Show us the Birth Certificate" will be heard during a pause in the speech.
Unless, of course, the Democrats still haven't learned from the last election and attempt to remove themselves from Obama even further.

I guess Obama is going to have to remove the recognition for Admiral Ackbar from the speech now.
(just to prevent a rehash of the "we don't negotiate with terrorists" talking point).

Nah, he's just sitting next to a fake Rep.
Del. Madeleine Bordallo (D-Guam) plans to sit next to Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.).
Supposedly the theme will be "competitiveness." I'm cautiously optimistic. I predict he will unveil 3 good proposals, one mediocre one, and one bad one. So that's overall a net positive of two.
It's a great time to sell the nation on healthcare and make the GOP look stupid for trying to repeal it. Especially since the majority of the nation doesn't want it repealed anyway. But he has to word it carefully, partisan attacks during SotU aren't cool.

Which is hilarious because the State of the Union address is not a time for people to do the whole opposition thing.

That's for 30 seconds after it's over?
:?:
That's correct. The time for a rebuttal is after the person whose points you would like to rebut is finished speaking. Which, in this case, is after the SotU is over. Is this a trick question?

These rebuttals are often completely independent from what the President actually says (they've been written long before the speech is given), and will, no matter what, be basically a florid version of "this guy is a douchebag".
Sorry, I just meant that it's always going to be (emphasis) opposition, not that I was formulating some trick question.
I've heard less recently about the President going after social security lately, so I'm cautiously optimistic. If he does that, Democrats become the dumbest political party of all time, so that's exciting.
But it would give Andrew Sullivan an orgasm, so yay?

I know you're not being 100% serious about this but man. There are some dumb political parties. They may as well be 4th parties.

What I'm saying is nobody should interrupt someone giving a speech like this. Rebuttals can wait for after. It's rude, and just polarizes things further.

That's encouraging to hear. After the roller-coaster of legislation that was this past December, my confidence is extremely shaky, so I'm interested to see what direction he's going to go. Obama's been using a lot of middling rhetoric lately, and it remains to be seen whether it's an attempt at better messaging or a sincere step to the right.
Coincidentally the 25th is also Robbie Burns Night, so there is a slight possibility that the State of the Union will get a little odd. Here is hoping!
