Hey Than, I live here. I've watched gay couples hold hands. Nary a stick, rock nor bottle was thrown. I haven't lived in Austin, but I've also talked to gays who do live there. They say they might get the odd snide remark but they aren't living in fear. Now going outside the cities, yes there is a horrendous problem.
Yeah, seems like a great place. And I hear the cops were super-helpful with catching those guys, and totally didn't just tell the entire gay community to fuck off and die.
You will have incidents like that pretty much anywhere, occasionally; the differences are 1) you didn't have a crowd of people standing around and watching, just letting shit happen, in Seattle; and 2) the cops fucking arrested the guy, instead of saying "sorry, y'all, yer SOL."
But hey, I'm sure if instead of gay people, it had been a television set, and instead of white rednecks, it had been a couple of Mexicans, the people of Austin would have been all over that shit.
They didn't get the guy making the ricin threats. My guess is the local cops were too busy tracking down local horse fuckers.
It's a bit harder to catch someone sending anonymous letters than it is to catch a bunch of rednecks who beat up some gay people in front of scores of witnesses. What the police were "busy" doing was coordinating with the bar owners and the FBI to try to catch the fuckers that did it, as opposed to just saying "eh, we're never gonna catch the guys; fuck off."
Yes, clearly a lazy cop indicates the town is a hate filled place.
I made a little more than last year and didn't have enough withheld
I guess I shouldn't complain, sorry
So It Goes on

This weekend, Rep. Eric Cantor (R., Va.), the House majority leader, will be attending the Koch conference in Palm Springs, Calif. Sources tell us that Cantor plans to detail his party’s “cut and grow” agenda in sessions with business leaders. It will be the Virginian’s third visit to the retreat, which is hosted semi-annually by brothers Charles and David Koch, who manage Koch Industries, a global manufacturing and investments group.

Nah, it always sucks getting a reverse-windfall to start off your year; I was just trying to point out that it has a silver lining, not trying to be down on you.
I mean, I love that movie and all, but it is basically a bunch of vignettes; it's almost entirely character-driven, so there's not a whole hell of a lot to say about the plot.

It's sufficient. We were discussing it in chat recently and I'm guessing we'll have some discussion on this film.

a Ghurka fights 40 guys single-handedly to save a girl who was about to get raped. Kills 3, injures 8.
how does that happen, exactly?

I guess I shouldn't complain, sorry
Well, that should be surprising to no one.

i just always figure that shit is automatic
I'm always afraid I'll fuck it up one year and owe a lot
but it's rare I work a full year, so I usually end up getting a lot back
like this year I only made ~30K but I was withholding at the rate for ~65K, so I'm getting a pretty sweet return
Party planning
