GV Create a Superhero Contest: A Tribute to Dwayne McDuffie: VOTE NOW

edited March 2011 in Graphic Violence
So, as you may know, Dwayne McDuffie passed away today. He was smart and talented, and a force for racial diversity in comics. He was a co-founder of Milestone media, which put a focus on minority superheroes, wrote this famous pitch, and worked on one of the finest cartoons in recent memory, Justice League Unlimited.

This installment of Graphic Violence Presents is dedicated to his memory.

Your task is to create a superhero that pays tribute to Dwayne McDuffie in some way. It doesn't have to be SUPER DWAYNE MCDUFFIE (in fact, that may be in poor taste). It could be a minority superhero that doesn't fit into readily available stereotypes. It could, in tribute to his pitch, be someone that rides a skateboard. You could use this contest to create a hero that pokes fun at overabundant stereotypes in comics. The choice is yours!

Now, for the technical stuff.

Here are THE RULES:
  1. Follow basic rules of the forums. That means no porn, no use of things like the N-bomb, etc. Check the rules thread for basic ideas.
  2. All entries must be able to fit in the character limit of a single post. That's more than enough space.
  3. Link to images over 200k. Make thumbnails if you have to.

And here are some GUIDELINES:

Your entry should contain the following:
  • The name of your hero or villain.
  • A drawing and/or description of the appearance of your hero or villain.
  • An origin story and/or biography of your character.
  • Powers and abilities, etc.

You aren't required to include all of these categories, and you may add more, but these should work as basic guidelines.

The deadline for entries is tentatively scheduled for Monday, February 28th before midnight Central time.

BONUS FOR THOSE WHO SUCK AT ART

Here's a link to HeroMachine, where you can do simplified hero designs. It ain't perfect, but it'll do!

I wrote a short summary of the origin story, but I feel a few short lines can't do my idea justice, so I decided to write it out in a short story. Never wrote fiction before, so who knows how it'll turn out.

[EDIT] God, I just read what I wrote yesterday and it's awful. This must not be read by humans. I'm out.

Wait. Dwayne McDuffie died? That's terrible. I loved his run on JLA. The cartoons he was involved in were amazing too.

Right then, let's kick this off.

Ever wondered what would happen if a wizard and a banshee had a kid?

Well I did, and what you end up with is

    EleanorMorrigan.png?t=1298588549

Eleanor Morrigan, a perfectly ordinary high school student. At least until her 16th birthday, when she yelled at her sister for "borrowing" her favourite tee shirt and shattered every window in her house. That night, Eleanor's fairy godmother arrived with three gifts - the news that Eleanor was adopted, dire warnings about the supernatural beings that hunted her, and a book of spells for Eleanor to study, so that she could learn to protect herself.

Eleanor did what any sensible teenager would do. She made herself a costume, conjured up a winged skateboard and set about fighting crime as...

    Death Nell!

    DeathNell.png?t=1298587772

    The Supernaturally Supersonic Skateboarding Sourceress!

    Powers and abilities

Sound and Fury: Unleashes sonic scream which delivers blunt force trauma to an opponent
Scream if you wanna go faster: Creates sound wave which she can "surf" on her skateboard, to increase speed
PARDON?!: Scream stuns and temporarily deafens everyone within earshot
Sonic Screwdriver: Focuses her scream into a fine point to drill through solid objects
Abrakadabra!: Can cast spells from her spellbook, with mixed results since it's difficult to read and she has no clue what she is doing
Deus Ex Matriarch: Can call on her godmother for help if all else fails

    Items:

    Winged skateboard
    Queen Maeve's Book of Spells

    Aubrey Apples

    AubreyApples.png

    Boredom.

That's what so much of Aubrey Apples's life had been, for the duration of her seventeen years. Boredom at breakfast, boredom at lunch, boredom at dinner, ad infinitum. In the small town of Harmony, Kentucky, boredom was surely the chief export.

That's why, when Aubrey decided to hop a split-rail fence and steal an apple from the miserly Mr. Munin, she never thought much would come of it.

That was before a bull broke loose at the local fair, and charged into her headlong, catapulting her some twenty feet with no ill effects. And it was before she went swimming in the local pond, and something snatched her about the ankle, trying to drag her under the water. And she's pretty sure it was before the softball game, where she hit a homerun every time she went to bat.

But, she's certain it was before the three giant men, covered in muscle, and lousy with sewer-breath, attacked her in the woods near her home. It was about that time, as she felled her three attackers with a series of clumsy blows, that it occurred to her something might not be quite right.

After a quick trip to the local library, Aubrey believed she might have found the source of her trouble. As it turned out, golden apples were kind of a big deal in mythology, be it Greek, Nordic, or Germanic fairy tales. Said to convey tremendous power to whoever eats them, they're definitely not meant for mere mortals, like Aubrey.

Now, with dark shapes lurking in the woods, scaly apparitions bubbling beneath the surface of the local swimming hole, and a sudden influx of mysterious strangers to the quiet town of Harmony, Aubrey finds herself wishing for nothing more than a steady diet of boredom.

But, in her defense, that apple was really more yellow than gold.

    QUANTUM
    migkgl.jpg

An obvious genius from a young age, Kelly Tanaka found that she could understand scientific ideas and concepts that her parents couldn't by the time she was eight years old. A lively, chaotic child, she nevethless devoured all the scientific knoweldge she could, devoting herself to the study of physics in an attempt to understand the nature of the universe. Her parents, bemused and amazed yet proud, were eager to support their daughter and hired private tutors in order to give her the best education she could.

With mutliple degrees before she was twenty years old, Kelly was called the herald of a new generation of knowledge by some, and though she always tried to find time for friends, family and a social life, she personally was eager to prove her supporters right. This eagerness became recklessness, and Kelly began work on her personal project, a quantum singularity generator which would allow her to peer into the inner workings of the universe itself!

After many long months of work, Kelly invited her friends and family along to see the unveiling of the new technology she had created, and fired the machine up! but despite all her predictions and simulations, something began to go very wrong, as the singularity warped, jumped and began to expand past safe levels! Suddenly filled with fear for the safety of those around her, Kelly cast caution to the winds and leapt at the machine's safety, regardless of the effect of the expanding Quantum cloud. When she hit the over-ride, a sudden burst of energy enveloped her and for a brief instant she was beyond the veil of space and time, in the incomprehensible Universe beyond!

Kelly came to in the ambulance, and was subsequently given a clean, normal bill of health. But in truth, Kelly felt very different from normal. Not only was she filled with shame, that her eager, selfish desire to prove her intelligence had put those close to her in safety, but also that her mind seemd to be whizzing faster than ever before, so fast that she had to consciously slow her thoughts down. On getting back to her apartment, Kelly threw herself in bed and slept for what felt like an eternity. But when she woke up, on a few seconds had passed! Amazed, Kelly began to run tests on herself, wondering what effects the singularity could ahve had on her own space/time footprint.

She discovered that she now had the ability to manipulate the flow of space and time, giving her the ability to think and move at incredible speed, within suffering the effects of life at such velocities. At first Kelly was filled with pride and excitement, that she had developed superhuman powers, and become one of that elite few who could do things no ordinary human could dream of! but then she remembered the danger she had put others through to get them, how arrogant and foolish she had been.

Kelly resolutely decided that she would not be that same person again. She would use her powers to help others, not prove her own intellect, and with them she would not just protect those she could from such threats as super-villains and invading aliens, but also expand the limits of science, for the benefit of all!

But even as she made this oath, back in the ruins of her shattered laboratory, the very air shifted and glowed, as something made from pure quantum chaos flickered into solid reality, somethign very much alive, with a mind of it's own and a desire to bring chaos and change to the slow, ordered Universe...

    POWERS
-Space/Time Manipulation allows for superhuman speed, both of thought and movement
-Genius physicist and expert at building advanced technology, now combined with her speed powers, mean she can quickly create a gadget or device in an emergency, should it be needed

    My own terrible, terrible art.

I drew that right before going to bed, looked at it the next morning and thought, "Ehhh, I bet I can save this in the coloring stage."

    But I was wrong.

I'm still torn on the vote. Solar's has kind of a Dr. Light II thing going on, which I'm always in favor of, and the Hippie's has a punny name, which I also dig.

I can't draw to save my life, but you can count on me to come up with the punniest name imaginable.

I'm still hugely impressed with myself for coming up with Doorbelle and Schrödinger's cat.

I can understand Munch getting the votes on account of cool story + own art, but I thought your backstory was a lot more imaginative than what I came up with.

    No problem buddy

I hope this isn't indicative of my overall character making ability though! I actually intend to use her in my current script, albeit in a slightly changed manner!
