Okay, assuming that each character you see on the forum is ASCII and not Unicode we can assume that each post is around just, say, 50-100 bytes of text. 100 bytes seems low to me - between SE++, D/D, and G&T that's about 1.3 GB right there. Since alpha said the DB size is 20 GB, I'm guessing my, er, guess is on the low end because even including uploaded avatars and signature images I didn't account for any overhead in my estimate (like formatting).
So, like I said, these here forums have a lot of text.
I wonder if overhead from indices is included the the 20GB figure.
I'd say probably if you're trying to guess how much space on disk you will need.
(I'm guessing the FULLTEXT index is particularly large....we'll get to avoid that index, but then we'll still probably have some other thing that takes up space that gets applied for searches)
End on
I wish that someway, somehow, that I could save every one of us
Please do not stare directly into the load balancer.
Nooo, don't look
ahhhhh
You gaze into thing zero, the core of all that is, and you begin to disintegrate. As the very vessel of your experience joins the background radiation of creation, you briefly gaze upon the face of death.
Seeing as this is going to be a forum variant I've never used before, all I can ask is this: Will you be able to patch in tapatalk support? Yes, an odd thing to ask, but I'm a pretty avid user and it makes forums about 10x easier when I'm at work or putzing around away from a pc.
Yeah the vanilla mobile stuff does look sexy (and like tapa, which is what made me want to write that post) still, if the api doesn't get added for tapa I surely hope that mobile site thing is setuup. I love you forum people but sometimes forums suck on a phone

alpha: having the plugins available on something like subversion or git would be great, as we could then fork them to add functionality (see my greasemonkey script for the embedded videos), and they can be merged at admin's discretion to incorporate it into the forum proper.
We already use Github to track our sites. I need to figure out a way to sanitize the code a bit (IP, authentication, etc) but I think that seems very reasonable.
Is this currently open to the public, or current devs only?
I set one up for my own site and it's pretty neat. They're still in the web 2.0 fevered mindset of "big buttons = good user experience," but it's not too bad.
Mister Alpha, will the content of the forums in their current state cease to be? In otherwords, is this a truly new place, or will old posts be ported over?
I just think losing all our awesome posts would be a sad.
I wouldn't put too much stock into what existing Vanilla boards look like, since the pa forums will pretty much look like however Erika decides they should look like.
I'm guessing we'll have a theme related to what the PA store has though, since I think that (in time) will the be main "penny arcade theme", which she also designed.
Edit: also, we'll get to beta the new forums, since alphamonkey said he doesn't want to go diggv4 on us (...or gawker if you will)
End on
I wish that someway, somehow, that I could save every one of us
was there anything that caught your eye about vanilla in terms of visual look
are there any vanilla boards that are out there for a point of reference?
edit: doh!
were you able to find one or two as examples?
I haven't done much searching, but I am a bit curious to see how it looks.
on the thing alphamonkey listed right in the OP (which i whoops, glossed over) there was this thing on the front page what shows the range of forums when you click on the little buttons below the example
the layout seems like a cleaner affair that seems to eschew stuff like avatars and signatures. it kinda reminds me of tumblr
I would like if there was still someway to make the forums look plain. I browse without avs, sigs, or images, since I do it at work. It loads fast and it looks clean. Though I wish there was a way to disable automatic youtube embedding the same way you can images.
If such a thing occurs, it would be nice if there was a button you could put somewhere on the page, maybe somewhere like where the posting rules box currently is where you can toggle those things on a per page or whatever basis. As it is it's kind of a process if I want to revert for a specific thread or page when I'm at home.
Also this is awesome alpha. Someone who doesn't suck at art like me should make you an avatar with an upside down melty ice vanilla ice cream cone hat.
edit: looks like anjin just answered some of my concern. At least for vanilla in it's default state. I guess that makes sense, it being vanilla after all.
Man, the code/aesthetic doesn't make the forums (given that they don't look like ass, which I'm confident they won't). The people do. If people leave because it is different, then they were never really into this place anyway.
I have to say I'm getting all kinds of excited at the prospect of being able to view this place comfortably on my mobile, without having to zoom in and out of posts all the time.

Which is what I was wondering about. :rotate:

But I don't think you'd have a fun time running the forums.

And beta before PAX East you say?
I am giddy as a schoolgirl!
You will need sunglasses.

ahhhhh
It's you.
You know, just a question.
:!:
Like 90% of my foruming is done on my phone these days so this is Good News
Thanks alpha!
I really hope so, though!

Like one that makes forum navigation links not a bastard on iPad?
Cause you know, it would suck if someone had uh, a thread with about two thousand images in it and have to fix them all... again.
Is this currently open to the public, or current devs only?
I don't suppose Vanilla has per-user plugins?
Every forum back to UBB (and probably before) has used the same bbcode.

Also, will the code tags have syntax highlighting? Please? Pretty please?

funny enough, there's a plugin mentioned on Vanilla's site for Santa hats. Probably the inspiration for last year's holiday shenanigans.
