Wacker interviewed about handling the Marvel Adventures line

He says something I mentioned a few pages back when Marvel did a focus group, which is kids like detailed artwork like George Perez, Jim Lee or Rob Liefield, and this is the art to use on kids books to bring them into the industry. I think if you put Liefield on a kids book, with the inker detailing his work like in the 90's, it would work to get kids to try more comics. Later their art style and preference will change but nothing is cooler to a kid than pouches and big effing guns and everyone being angry and having hoverships and jetpacks.

    I dunno about that.

If you look at the media kids are consuming today, it's shifting more in the direction of cleaner, anime-influenced art. Look at Ben 10 or Generator Rex. Or the bouncy, cartoony designs from the Clone Wars cartoon, or Pixar's movies.

I was like, six years old when the X-Men cartoon debuted. That, like many other comic nerds my age, was my huge entry point to comics, and everything was noticeably inspired by the style of Jim Lee. So transitioning over to reading comics that had a similar artistic style (X-Force, X-Factor, X-Men) was easy. I think kids today would react to a Rob Liefeld style, the same way I'd have reacted to Jack Kirby. It's not what they know, so they'll probably reject it.

I could be totally wrong about that, though. Honestly, there's no easy solution to getting kids to read comics, and most people's reasoning seems contradictory to how I got into comics. There's a common refrain that kids don't like books that pander to them, and self-contained stories. But, I bought X-Men Adventures when I was in elementary school, and most of my early comic collection is nothing but assorted crossover issues, which I thought looked cool at the time.

I had a subscription to X-Men Adventures as a kid. And I remember around the Genosha issue that all it was going to be was good art but just a rehash of the TV episodes and it turned me off of tv inspired comics ( for the longest time I didn't realize the Batman and Superman DCAU stuff was it's own little world and not straight copies of the TV episodes).

And while Ben 10 has a clean art style, Young Justice is fairly detailed, and even stuff like the Transformers movies are a bunch of detailed stuff constantly moving around. It looks like a mess and certainly so, but that's the kind of CGI detail kids are seeing Optimus Prime in while back in the day we had simple Korean animation.

There is a difference between a crazy mess of action and detail, like Bachalo, Quitely, Darrow and even Corey Lewis and whatever you call the 90's Image whatever crowd's... output.

I'm afraid Marvel is stuck in some kind of mental timewarp. Yeah, there was good stuff in the 90s, but it wasn't really found in mainstream Marvel or DC books, at least not art-wise.

All comic book websites compromise themselves to some extent to get access to previews and creators, don't they?

Yeah, this is how I look at the bigger websites now:

CBR - gets the most information and exclusives but tows the company lines to a pretty big degree for fear of upsetting someone. The way they ask questions in interviews looks pretty much like an in-house promo ad created by DC or Marvel, such as those Marvel spotlight pages they do in comics sometimes.

Newsarama - kind of second hand stuff now, with a bad website layout where they spam "articles" as nothing more than preview pages. But the articles Vaneta Rogers herself writes are actually very good and researched. Her article about the Comics Code Authority being just an office somewhere at how no one has really looked at the comics to code them is something you don't see at other sites.

Bleeding Cool - gets rumors and inside source stuff and is much more willing to go with it, and is pretty accurate with them (I'd say 70%?), but won't say anything bad about Avatar and really pushes the eBay speculation stuff. Also all the porn parody stuff that Johnston admits is done to get traffic to allow for the littler things. He also does some real strong interivews like with the Image Publisher and Pat Lee that you don't get from other websites.

The Beat - more a blog about comic culture with those nice month to month sales analysis, plus stuff outside the publishing arena like Borders money troubles, Diamond, etc.

Comics Alliance/Robot 6/Blog @- your bevy of comic blogs that have a few things they're good at.

Honestly I think ComicsAlliance is the best of the lot

they are 100% straight with their reviews, with no fear of the company. Which is nice since they are owned by AOL Time Warner and you'd think DC would have at least a little pull

    plus, Chris Sims.

I just hate Bleeding Cool on principle, it's nice that they get some inside info, but in the end they are rumormongers. The Pat Lee interview was nice, but taking a dude's joke and spinning it into a completely false story is just bullshit.

there was this awesome comics site that I remember reading that had multipart series of character overviews, but I can't remember the name.

two of the articles I remember were a summary of Venom up to Mac Gargan, and awesome Deadpool moments.

I'm reasonably sure the background color of the site was purple, but that could've changed :P

You may be thinking of 4th Letter. I know Gavok likes Deadpool a lot, and he did an article about the dynamic between Norman Osborn and Gargan.

Personally, I stopped reading Newsarama after getting eye-fucked with ads, and constantly getting hit with virus and malware warnings. Plus, they cut their previews into chunks, and it all loads slow as Hell. There may be good content over there, but I'm not wading through a shit-filled swamp just to find a gold coin.

CBR's better, have some good press releases, their weekly previews are really nice, but I hate their in-text ads.

Comics Alliance is my go-to place for original content and harsh criticism, but their little round-up articles where they link a bunch of stuff, are pretty much useless. Occasionally, they get a really good interview, as with that 5 part Darwyn Cooke interview. Additionally, David Brothers usually has something interesting to say about digital comics. Their site layout is nice and clean too, which I appreciate.

4th Letter usually has some provocative talk about race in comics, their podcast is really fun, and they're not afraid to call creators on their bullshit, which is always nice. Plus, Gavok's articles on Venom, Extreme Justice, and all the other horrors to emerge from the nineties, push my nostalgia buttons just right.

The Weekly Crisis's Moments of the Week are like scans_daily without all the bullshit, and their Fireside Chats are entertaining, though usually too brief. I think they could stand to update more. I need to pester KVW about doing some more contributions.

Bleeding Cool occasionally has some interesting material, and I think they do go after creators in a way most sites don't, but shit like The Swipe File has just become embarrassing in how little effort's put into it.

Oh yeah, Weekly Crisis is a good blog site, and even with Kirk being gone for the past few months it's held up well. The interviews with Scott Snyder and Stuart Immonen are nice as well.

And speaking of swipe file, this Erro guy needs to be stopped. He's straight up stealing comic art, the Icelandic jerk.
