I'm digging the second one also, but I agree about the arms/hands, they seem a little oversized, especially the stage left one.

Thanks for the input fellas. I should mention the project brief was to make the pirate character similar in style to Blizzards artwork (oversized arms, feet, shoulders etc). He needs to have over the top weapons and accessories. That said Im having trouble creating a balance on some of the features (e.g the arms and hands) and can definately understand that they will need work.

WCK, that's one of the best faces I've seen from you. It distinctly doesn't look like MJ, and fits both costumes. Good work. :)

Another digital work, this time I'm not so sure on the brickwork behind him. I did have bricks going right up next to his head, but he got lost so I removed those. I'm still not sure on them, but without any kind of shading (only outlined bricks) it looked under worked. Now I feel like they may be too active and distracting. I also think his head is too high in the image (halfway), and it would have been more effective to have more space above him. I might add that later.

Tiny gouache self portrait. There's a lot that could still be fixed on this, but I'm well into the point where trying to fix things would almost certainly only make things worse, because I am terrible at predicting at how the paint will behave when I try. Of course, that's the point of the exercise- trying to develop the patience/eye/instincts get things right the first go around rather than dicking with it forever like I do in Photoshop- but I still can't help but be annoyed. Learning learning augh.

Yes, but that's because in 10 years the economy will be so bad that people just won't be able to afford the other 3 halves to make up a proper pair, not because they consciously went out of their way to look like a werido.

So I'm working on this colourful rainbow looking person to practice some painting or whatever and I see some mistakes
    colourgirl2.pngcolourgirl.png

So I'm wondering if I'm on the right track for corrections, moving the bust up, bringing the back in a bit.
I'm also wondering how I define the ribcage more. As it is it looks pretty flat and I don't know, it probably shouldn't.

It's odd you mention that because everyone else had seen the "The Music Industry" before finding the correlation between "Them" and "Us."

It's supposed to be one of those things that you have to look at twice to see both meanings, to get the whole message. Perhaps later tonight I'll upload one that has the "THEM US" in grey and the rest in black?

Yeah, that definitely looks a lot better. The belly button also might need to move towards the right a little bit since it doesn't seem to be lining up with the center-line of the torso.

As for the flatness of the ribcage/stomach area: That's going to need some work, but the shading there is going to need to be very subtle, since the kind of body-type you're painting doesn't have a lot of rigid surface cues. If you over-define it, she will either look ripped or wrinkly or emaciated. If you under-define, she'll look like a lump of Silly-Putty.

I would probably suggest digging around for reference material and doing a few different passes to see what works best. You might also try breaking the torso into more basic shapes and work from there.

oh. Its supposed to be like Us vs Them? I wasn't really latching onto it because of the reversal, I was just like "whats bombthemus?"

I am sometimes slow on design stuff, so that might be on me.

I much prefer B to the others, though I also sorta dislike the R.

Hey tam you should post some progress shots. You get a lot of volume in your lines and It would be cool to see how you build it up.

haha I actually made on of these today. I cut the thumb and the index finger off of one of those "one size fits all" black winter gloves that everyone always has a million pairs of laying around. I absolutely love drawing on my tablet with it now b/c I can make long strokes without my clammy hands sticking to the tablet!

Speaking of hands, that rules so much tam. You are full of win lately.

Hey Obi, that ship is a little confusing to look at, its shape is not immediately apparent. especially with the beams/exhaust? ending at the planet edge, is it supposed to be a sheild? or is it a planet in the background?

Tam, that is awesome. I'm visualising that painted in a Victorian era portrait style. :)

On the topic of hands, what methods do you generally use to get them so accurate? I tend to have a lot of trouble with hand positioning and proportions.

yeah there you go cam. if you want to be even more precise, you can try and draw in the general shapes of the bones now.
    also yes, fix the nips

Veldrin, I think of how a hand works and visualize the position I want in my head. Apart from that, you really have to study hands. Drawing studies is the best way, but I get by on sort of analytical observation. Wouldn't recommend the latter if you're trying to become a for real artist.

Iruka, I'll try that next week when I have time to draw again

    thanks for the encouragement, dudes
