I'm gonna have to get Brink just because everyone I play with on BC2 is going to get it :(

I'm not even too excited about it!

This particular trailer is all about the core abilities for our classes, hence the lack of unlockable abilities in it. You'd be surprised how many people outside of this forum aren't familiar with Brink's classes... :)

If you are Brink addict, it is worth checking out the probably NSFW Brink thread at Something Awful and the Brink section of the Splash Damage forums. SD devs post at both of those places and occasionally answer questions.

Here is a post about the outlines:
    Exedore wrote: »
    Woah, sensible post alert!

I'll admit that I don't think any of us thinks our solution is ideal, but a decent solution nonetheless when compared to the alternatives. It's something that has had a lot of back and forth and tweaking at SD Towers, and is actually even tuned differently per map due to combat distances and lighting. The Art team did a huge pass through the customization options a while back and 'factionalized' the available colours a bit more, which allowed us to tune down the highlighting a bit more.

As ever, it's all about trying to find a balance between usability and aesthetics, and as developers, we simply don't have the luxury of thinking players aren't good enough if they can't grasp it. It means we've failed.

And to clarify, the enemy highlighting is something called 'rim lighting', and the outlines we call 'halos'. Halos indicate an interaction possibility or a buff/debuff (i.e. Adrenaline), and the red rim lighting indicates PEOPLEZ TO SHOOT.

    Muahahahaha....it's working

I was a Wolfenstein:ET fan long before I got into Battlefield, so it holds a special place in my heart. I felt Quake Wars was too much of a BF clone (and an inferior one at that), but this looks to be a return to form for Splash Damage. Throw in the freedom of movement / parkour elements and the massive amount of customization, and I'm all over it.

If it gets you any more excited, you can think of Brink as a more interesting and diverse form of Rush from BC2.

Hopefully this won't disallow stealthy gameplay. That would seem to remove some cool possibilities for the light body type.

It looks like pistols are a viable option too! Not like a battlefield or CoD where its just a last resort. I think light body type + pistols is gonna = <3

Once the game comes out I can see myself sleeping with the game case as if it were a teddy bear.

The single barrel grenade launcher is supposedly called the Lobster, because it lobs grenades. That's funny.

    RE: outlines
We don't know anything definite. Maybe you can turn them off, maybe you can't. This might remove the stealth option entirely, save for the Operative. That's an interesting idea. Being blindsided by a wannabe ninja is infuriating.

And SD has said you get more XP for doing objective related things. There is some guy going on around the different Brink forums saying that a medic gets 175 XP for healing a guy-- 75 for throwing the syringe and 100 for the guy using it. Same guy says you get less than 50 XP for killing guys. And there is supposed to be a slow XP gain just for being near objectives-- such as escorting a robot or the prisoner in that one map or whatever.

Consider Black Ops and its Ghosts. Those players are typically all about the K/D. Very few of them use the Ghost thing to achieve anything objective related. They work the edges of the map, shooting people in the back, they camp and snipe, the hide in corners near objectives with a silenced rifle...

Brink does have silencers, but maybe that is more of an aesthetic thing?
    Interesting food for thought.

I'm more interested in what kind of modding the game will support. The new experience system suggests that it won't be mod friendly at all.

Quake Wars didn't really hit its competitive stride until they brought in the competitive mod that unlocked all the perks at the start of the map.

One of the reasons I'm interested in the light body class is the opportunity to find and exploit unique angles of attack. If I've got some big neon outline happening that kind of tactic loses a lot of its punch, since it depends on surprise. I can appreciate trying to eliminate a lot of the suck that seems to be entrenched into online shooters. That's a great goal. But if they make situational awareness trivial, handled by glaring cues in-game, I'm afraid the gameplay will become oversimplified. Much of what makes combat in any game dynamic and exciting is hitting an enemy where they are weakest, or tricking an enemy into striking a point that only looks weak. Ambushes in an apparently safe route, turning their strongholds into deathtraps, these are all classic strategies and one of the primary tactics for achieving them is stealth.

I think you're worrying about a hill of bananas, to be honest. Watching the gameplay videos, things are pretty grimey/dark/shadowy in a lot of maps. I think it's mostly just a way of identifying friends from enemies, and as they said, the halo dims as you approach it, and LOS plays a factor.

I only see this as a hindrance if you want to play stealth by blending in with the enemy...in which case, play operative.

Plus, stealth seems a bit less important in an arcadey-style game. This game looks like a combination of Unreal Tournament, TF2, and a dash of Assassin's Creed. I think they're going for less "oh crap there was a guy there?" and more "ahhh I forgot they can attack from that side" because the former is far less fun.
