Back to Community, is it a sign of good acting and writing that when Britta did her rendition of "hit me with your genie's bottle," my reaction was not to laugh but rather the same "what the fuck was that?" reaction I'd have had to a real-life friend doing the same?

In general I can see everyone but Jeff and Annie going 5 years. Pierce is the only one who could stay forever because he's there just for fun. And then it could be called "Wipe That Smirk..." starring Pierce Hawthorne as he has follies at his moist towelette company.
There's a middle ground where they just keep making a good show.
I can't think of a single show that's managed it off the top of my head. Nearly every show goes on well past its prime, and is not cancelled until it's gone downhill. With the exception of those killed in the crib before they have a chance to flourish, of course.
Best I can come up with is The Shield.

The whole "they should do it like the British!" thing annoys me because the British by and large make shitty television.
And I'd much rather a show have too much time than too little. I've never understood that mentality. "Oh man, this is a good show. I hope they nip that in the bud soon."

But, in general, I'd like a show to end when it's still great. I guess I just feel like I could care about the ending more, and look back on it more fondly, that way. Like, take Supernatural. If they had actually ended it last season, it would have had an (IMO) excellent five-year run. The current season isn't "bad" by any means, but I just feel like if it goes three more years I'm not going to care as much about whatever ending they come up with anymore; whereas with only the most minor of tweaks, last year's season finale would have been a fitting end to an awesome show.
I guarantee you that if the show goes on for more than four seasons, the first episode of the fifth season will be the characters all commenting that it definitely hasn't been four years and they still have all sorts of important classes to take. It will be filled with mentions of how Obama is still in his first term (or still in office, depending on the results of the election), etc.
I don't see why they'd have to be in college. They can think of some other ridiculous reason for them all to hang out. They barely even talk about their class now as it is.

There are crappy, useless people everywhere. The only difference I see between my friends who go to real college and my friends who go to community college is the community college people work harder.
I've seen both ends of it, having done CC and then transferred to the university out here.
The community college (which I like a lot more than the university in most ways) had a pretty good split between hardworking people who just didn't go to school at 18 for whatever reason (myself included), and the kids whose parents clearly told them they had to go to school or get a job and they picked the one they thought would be easier. The university though has a similar split, just with less older people. Plenty of people who clearly decided that college in a Hawaii was a brilliant plan, and others who want to work hard and graduate. Most of the hard working types grew up here though.
As for the seasons of the show though, as someone said, Shirley and Pierce aren't full-time students anyway, it'd be easy to do fake extension by not having a year pass each season (see That 70's Show for a pretty egregious use of this, considering both shows tend to have Halloween, Christmas, etc episodes), or simply have it turn out they need more classes. I know a lot of people who ended up being 5 year students thanks to miscounting courses or fucking something up in their "plan".
Jeff is trying to become a lawyer. Don't you need a 4 year degree followed by lawschool for that? Annie wants to become a hospital administrator(from the bar episode) again a 4 year degree I think. Abed is studying film with a fallback in falafel store managment, which could take 4 years.
Troy has a pillow in his backpack, him being finished in 2 years? Doubtfull. Pierce is studying just to make friends, so he will stick around. Annie definitely needs to transfer to a real college, which could possibly still be near Greendale or in the city since it has two community colleges. Abed should want to go to a film school not just take film classes at a community college. Troy might just stay at Greendale for a four year degree.
Abed's dad might not want to pay for a fancy film school, he didn't want Abed to study film at all. So thats him stuck in a no go. The group is also his most meaningfull relationship in life and Troy is his best friend.
Annie has a crush on Jeff and loves the study group so much she sabotaged them in order to keep them together. She has also had 2 chances to transfer to another school and didn't take either of them. So she is the most likely to stay.

Greendale starts to offer satellite courses for area four year schools - that will open up everyone staying and create new tension in the group as the campus draws lines between the two types of college services they offer. Imagine a four year only rule is imposed in the study rooms for example.
Wait: This show is real time, this is the second season. They should be transferring/graduating this year anyways... so the issue should hit at the start of the next season.

Does anybody know how much of an affect the thursday lineup had on Community's ratings?
Earlier this season before the move to a Thursday lineup there was a interview with Dan Harmon where he was quoted as saying something along the lines of "They can never take away the fact that we got to make two seasons of Community". When I heard that quote I figured that Community was doomed. I wonder what has changed since then.
