This is a four page comic I'm working on. I have not added text yet. Please crit, I don't have enough to make a thread yet!
Thanks!
For reference the text will read as follows:
Holy smoke! I'ts bunny town.
Everybody gather round
See them living just like us
But its cuter you can trust
Heres the mayor, he's running things
Bribe with carrots, he'll pull strings.
A liquor licence you now have
Sell to minors that is bad
Policeman bunny sees it all!
Give more carrots, take no fall.
Corruption runs this bunny town
that is why they've never found
Mr. Floppy selling arms
Peanut Brittle's special farm.
All this trouble seems so awful
But keep in mind as you see the brothel,
Drugs and murder, rape and crooks,
The biggest problem overlooked...
She got some Micheal Jacksonish features right now that are making her face seem freaky. Neck/chin/nose areas especially. Maybe try giving her more natural qualities.
Looking cool Obi. i thinik the problem is that there are loads of different perspectives in the face. Also, her chest looks a little small and boxy. its a cool looking concept. If its not working, just take what you've done and start over.
Should I lose the gradient in the frog's head too or only the one beneath the frog?
The one in the frog is gradual enough to be inoffensive (to me, anyway) so you could go either way with that I think, but ultimately I think flat fills better serve what you're going for.
for ukiyo-e, I would definitely stay away from gradient coloring--it isn't traditional. I think a big part of the charm of ukiyo-e and woodblock in general is the flatter color, but that is just my preference. If you want gradients, go for it. The frog image is VERY nice.
I really have to start making more prints--I am pretty competent at the carving part, but the drawing part is still a weakness.

Some nice wips and doodles this page
WCK - I'm digging that design, although his head IS a bit small. Lots of cool accessories there, gives him a nice world-traveler feel.
Veldrin - Very nice ass on that dude. The mustache makes him look like he's a 40-year old accountant cosplaying.
Obi - That little divot taken out just off the side of her chin is throwing me off. Her breasts look to be very high, if you're going for the "pushed up" look from her shirt, I think they just need to be more rounded, but I don't know if that's what you're shooting for.
On my end, I realized it was Tam's birthday about a day after he did (and he realized a day late!) so I made a drawing
Well if you look at Hiroshige and Hokusai's landscapes you can often see gradients. These gradients are most prominent in the landscapes only too, but they sometimes do appear in characters too, like in the clothes and shadows of Toyokuni's stuff. That's also possibly the most remarkable thing about ukiyo-e, that you can find these gradients. It takes more than 1000 printing sessions to reach a gradient like those (now that's japanese patience and perfection!). But still one should always consider whether the gradient is appropriate so I'll probably be dropping both gradients.
thx guys

I don't really see a problem with the gradient on the frog himself. It's subtle, and it works.
I don't see a problem with using a gradient on the background either, I just think the shading on the grass beneath him is a little extreme in transition compared with the rest of the coloring in the pic, so it draws my attention. The sky is really gradual and subtle too, so it's not as jarring.
I'm not a scholar on ukiyo-e prints, so I'm not speaking from a technical aspect, just how I'm seeing it aesthetically.
thanks for the input varg, maybe I'll just tone it down a bit instead.
also, didn't realize there was an alt version of your- ARGH NOOO scarred for life my eyes!
I love this. Did you have a strong idea of this character before you started? What was your general process?
Sort of! I'm doing this for the artorder blog challenge thang. So 'human' and 'fighter' were part of the prompt.
I knew I wanted to do an ugly character. Someone who looked like they had been fighting, someone brutal - and I had been talking to some friends recently about the dearth of ugly women in games. I decided I wanted someone sort of in between Rachel Dart's barbarian women and Grace Jones. I knew I wanted to go mostly near white monochrome on the clothing to contrast against the skin tones. So I didn't stray into 'paladin' territory I wanted to look at gladiator armor as inspiration - the more brutal looking the better.
I guess I should have thrown 'ugly' in quotes - the discussion here at work was more in reference to the ridiculous standard of beauty for women in video games. Because, no, I agree, shes not ugly, but she is ugly for video games.

My apologies.
that makes more sense
also I agree that the way women are depicted in most videogames is ridiculous

Carrots are not a stable form of currency.
I'm going to do some actual ukiyo-e prints some time in spring. Trying to copy the style a bit.

that lady's face is way too symmetrical to be called ugly
you should make her face more disproportionate
maybe some scars
