Geektastic Sing-a-Long

Thinking about submitting for a time slot to do a sing-a-long during Pax Prime 2011 with songs Geeks love: The Lumberjack song, Still Alive, Istanbul... etc... I'm thinking not of songs about geeks persay but the songs that true geeks grew up loving and proud of it. I can sing, but methinks there needs to be someone (or some band) who can carry the tune on a guitar, harpsichord, lute or some other instrument of +10 ROCK.

Would there be any interest in such insanity?

Happily on Sabbatical. Don't bug me.

I have to admit, while I can't make it to Prime, this idea needs to be part of PAX in the worst way possible. I mean they did it on the shuttle rides to and from hotels here at East, but like a sing-a-long panel/meetup/event would be SOOOOOO money. I'd say submit it to the organizers as a Jamspace event.

At the first PAX East the queue room waiting for the omegathon final round spontaneously sang Bohemian Rhapsody. We attempted to continue this tradition at PAX East 2, but nobody sang with us. So disappointing!

I don't think a particular sing-along event will really be that fun. Instead we should pick just one song and sing it in the final queue. If just enough people know about it, then we can get the rest of the people to join in. It's a chance for Prime to prove its superiority. It will also be way more epic.

There's already the JAMSPACE set up for impromptu music. It would likely fit the bill for what you want to do here.

That's a nice segue into a question I've wanted to ask: What exactly is in the Jamspace? Are there instruments? Microphones? Is there a queue? Les Pauls? (not likely) Mexican-made Strats? (more likely) Horns? (Not at all likely, but I love me some ska)

The search function is down still, so it can be hard to find older threads.

Easiest way is to go to google, and type "http://forums.penny-arcade.com/ <search terms here>" and you can usually find what you're looking for.

I run the jamspace, so feel free to ask me any questions if that thread doesn't answer them. I agree that this singalong would fit perfectly in the jamspace at PAX prime. GET PUMPED.

Actually, Jamspace was exactly what I was thinking (unless I can convince the management of the Elephant and Castle to let a horde of gamers invade their bar... unlikely!). The hardest part is finding musician(s) who can learn the songs and play them. Just a guitar player would be enough - though in a perfect world finding karaoke versions of all these songs would be brilliant.

If any musicians are interested, send them here!

Well, I'm proficient at guitar and keyboards, and can play easy stuff on bass, and may be bringing my alto sax and my chanter (basically a practice bagpipe). I'm not a technical playing wiz, but with enough lead time I can learn whatever. Sing-a-long songs are typically pretty easy on the instrumentation anyway - know the chords and rhythms and go. The hard part will be convincing my 8 year-old to hang out while Daddy's playing.

If I may make an off-the-wall song selection, I'd love to do "Riot NRRD" by 2 Skinnee Jays. :P
