Capturing Computer Video to Edit

Hello all,

Here's my situation. I've got a decent PC (I guess the only relevant spec here is the graphics card...it has a Radeon X800, no All-In-Wonder or anything like that) that I play games on, surf, etc.. I wanted to capture some Youtube videos, DVDs, and gameplay footage to edit machinima style on my second computer...

...a 15" MacBook Pro (with the upgraded Radeon graphics card). I have Final Cut Pro Studio version one, so I basically want to export from my PC to my Mac in .dv or .mov format, or anything that I could eventually convert and edit.

The problem is, FRAPS is too slow for the gameplay capture I want to do. Otherwise I would purchase that and be done with it.

Instead, I think a hardware solution is in order. I've thought of a couple options.

1. Film the computer screen (LCD) with a miniDV camera and import the footage. I'd rather not do this.

2. Export to a DVR or Tivo like box, and then import into my Mac. I lack a Tivo/DVR, and I don't have any S-video out or anything like that on my PC (or inputs on my Mac), so I'm not sure if that's a great idea.

3. Buy a dated PCI graphics card for my PC that just barely does S-Video/composite/component out, and find some way to route it or capture it on my Mac.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

you probably want a video capture card, with a hardware encoder built in.

I've been looking into getting one myself, and I read good things about Hauppauge cards.

The better idea would be to upgrade your computer since then FRAPS will then run awesomely (I can get it to record WoW at 60fps, but WoW isn't exactly graphics intensive.)

However, since that costs way too much money you could probably just use the S-Video out on your card to record it on another computer with a capture card but it will probably look terrible.

I'm not sure if you can get capture cards that can take VGA, but that would probably look better.

Download Growler Guncam http://www.growlersoftware.com and set the video size to 320X240 or whatever youtube's dimension is. You shouldn't even notice it running.

It runs well where fraps can't.
