My first exposure to these kind of stories was when I was 7 or 8, with the goosebumps stories. I didn't get the concept right away, i guess I always glossed over the part where it told me what my options were, but I read the book like halfway through, page by page, and just kept getting mad that the story didn't make any sense before it finally clicked and I had to start over
Oh man, I had Invaders from Hark when I was a kid. Yeah, you died a lot in that. I think I had to work my way backward from the end page to figure out how to win.

Oh man, are there any more online versions of these cyoa books? This badlands one is pretty great, even if it lacks a "keep your finger in the last page" button..
http://www.bradthegame.com/ A text only chose your own adventure as kind of a day in the life of a guy named Brad. Some situations are a little NSFW but there is a lot you can do from finding pants, to falling in love, to defeating your evil shape shifting uncle and unlocking "hard mode". I played the hell out of this game way back in the day.
"You've won a faboulous trip to the fabled lands!"
http://sourceforge.net/projects/flapp/ Free app to play the 6 released Fabled Lands books. Requires a download but keeps track of everything like rolling and ticking boxes for you. If you want to support the creators you can buy the books on Amazon or the first book for the ipad. They've said if there is enough interest they would write and release the remaining six books in the series. Definitely recommend giving this a try
.
I would also recommend Echo Bazaar but that is kind of an MMO and not all the situations are choose your own adventurey. Still its free and a lot of fun and we have a thread for it Here
I have grand dreams of writing the next evolution of CYOA books. Kind of a Harry Potter-audience targeted affair but instead of having multiple choices within each book, each release ends with a major cliff hanger and the reader can choose the result depending on which version of the next book to buy (like different versions of Pokemon games) with mostly the same story but varying details depending on the choice made.
Basically a ploy to make kids buy twice as many books.
