That didn't take nearly long enough but I think I'm a little over 100

I could keep going but I'd have probably have to start looking up titles before much longer to make sure I'm getting them right :P

Yep, you listed at least 4 movies that I should have put on my list but could not remember.

off the top of my head without looking at WMP. I'm probably forgetting some really obvious things

The Beatles, for instance. They basically invented music.

    I said bands I like.

edit: oh yeah, bands I like who invented music, Zepp and Floyd.

Listen, bro. The Beatles are like...there's like a gene and we all have it and it's the liking-Beatles gene and if you deny it you deny your very humanity.

I have never felt comfortable discussing my sex life.

When I was at school and Uni people would be quite explicit and I would just avoid saying anything else myself. It apparently became a bit of a joke with people that I would never say anything (I think they thought it was sweet or something).

it's funny. i used to feel like ones taste in things was really definitional to understanding ones character. like, if i liked punk music and arty filmmakers and classic literature then it really said a lot about what kind of person i am.

i think i've kind of gotten over this. whenever i see artfully-selected lists of "favorite books/ films/ music" that people fill out on social networking sites, it generally just kind of makes me yawn.

on the other hand, i do enjoy talking about media with people who have similar tastes to me. i guess i just don't see it as especially definitional in terms of character.

I know way too much about all of my male friends' sex lives. All of them. In a couple of cases, I know too much about their bowel movements too.

This is kind of the nature of male friends.

man, i never socially discuss my sex life and it makes me really uncomfortable when my friends start going on about theirs.

Yeah but you're old, not like a young college student.

Probably the most involved conversations I have with my friends are just going on and on about stuff about sex.

even as a young college student or high school kid, i didn't talk about my sex life. it's just crass and kind of disrespectful.

it's disrespectful in some contexts. when winky talks about his sexual appetites with a friend of his (who is comfortable with it), in their home, who is being disrespected?

it's not mixed company. what social rules two friends follow in private isn't really the same thing.

oh, right, that's what i'm saying. different contexts call for different protocols.

sort of? I mean you know I agree with you about most of this but if someone is really freaked out about, say, two dudes on the other side of the restaurant holding hands then they are kind of a contemptible coward

I don't want to watch two dudes make out in public just as much as i don't want to watch a guy and a girl make out in public

yes, what i was getting at

    and I can't agree more

my mother is very liberal (gasp!) and when the family is all together we have very nice civil discussions about politics or whatever

but if someone gets offended, we stop

    because we're not dicks.

In general it would be nice if everyone could act/speak/behave in a manner that doesn't bother anyone else.

However there is a limit to how much a person should be expected to censor themselves before that expectation becomes unreasonable.

As to where that line should be drawn,

In Last.fm's top 20 artists list, there are four bands I like and Nirvana are the only one of those bands where I enjoy all of their albums.

God, Last.fm's lists are terrible. SOAD have more plays than Zepp? I hate people.

i don't really see that as the same thing. holding hands or basic affectionate gestures are appropriate to polite society, and i would include gay dudes holding hands in public as being under that umbrella.

talking explicitly about sexual acts or encounters in mixed company is inappropriate and disrespectful whether you're straight or gay or a swinger or whatever else.

to be fair, i have had a ton of conservatives rudely get up in my face with their bullshit too.

i don't like it from either side of the political spectrum, but i don't think liberals really have a lock on it.

[chat] is like a crowded party. Yeah it's a fun environment and so if you want to talk about cocks or poop or whatever I mean that happens because people are being silly and having a good time, but if someone's uncomfortable, stop and be polite and mindful. And keep in mind that you might be having a great conversation with your buddy, but you have no idea how many people are listening in.
