Honestly, as easy as it is to hate on slacktivists, at least they believe in incremental morality. To them, life isn't just "oh man if I can't be 100% environmentalist I might as well be 0% environmentalist and shit on anyone who tries to help in whatever way they can"
Eddy, tossing a couple of cans of beans into the food bank at Christmas isn't, you know, really helping homelessness or whatever.
But it is doing something. That something is pretty minor, but it's something.
Earth Hour isn't "something". It's nothing. It isn't helping. The people who organize and encourage it don't really understand how electrical power grids work, and they're not very good at actually seeing where the causal relationships between electrical power and environmental damage begin and end.
Isn't belief in agency just as important as agency itself? I don't give a shit what Earth Hour is or does or even if it is ultimately harmful to energy consumption or the environment. What the actual effect is is meaningless - the importance of these largely symbolic acts is placing the locus of control to the ordinary person, to understand that saving energy is in fact a desirable goal.
It would seem like that is a purpose better served by getting people to take steps that actually save energy.

Yeah man spreading the message that maybe it's a good idea to conserve your individual resources is some kind of evil plot I agree. We should combat this by having everyone turn everything in their house on for one hour of the day.

My two favorite LA meetings that have happened in contexts I can talk about are Andre Royo from The Wire (Bubbles). He was in line at The Grove and I just went up to him and told him I thought his work was brilliant and he thanked me. Probably the other one would have to be Colbie Smulders (Robin from HIMYM). I was at a party with a friend that she was at and she made a joke and I told one back and she laughed and I have never felt better in my whole life.
