Connection Time-Outs

ZombiemamboZombiemambo Registered User regular
I keep getting an error page in Firefox about Penny Arcade taking too long to respond. I mean, at least 1 every 5 refreshes. What's the deal?

I'm getting them too, but they are a known issue.

Well, if they're happening more recently, might be because:

AT&T is currently taking a crap right now.

Last two weeks I've been having the site taking a dump on me for about 1-2 miutes at least 5-10 times an hour. Happens from work or home, with multiple browsers.

I'm having the same problem not just with the forums but with the comic pages as well. When one fails to load the other fails to load as well.

It's the load balancer, which will hopefully be replaced soon. Nothing we can do about it until it is.

    It's hella annoying, I agree.

Amazingly, it is not annoying enough to be keeping people away; we had a record-high one-day pageview count last week.

could it be related to extra stress from the new caching thing?

Really? Last week and not two weeks ago? I'd have thought the pounding the forums got during the SC2 announcement would have taken the cake.

    yep.
    Wednesday, May 30, 2007 417,440 pageviews

    The previous record was:
    Monday, April 23, 2007 417,355 pageviews

My best guess is it has something to do with the article in PC Gamer?

not sure what you mean by "caching thing"? I believe the load balancer itself is a caching thing, and it is broken.

When the "mark threads as read" cacheing type affair was changed from cookie based to server based, there was some talk that it puts extra stress on the server, I wondered if that was relevant.

ah, no. That puts load on the database server, which is at the far back end of the chain. Our problem is in the load balancer which is at the far front of the chain. The database server is doing peachy, last I heard.

And if it were the DB server, wouldn't you get "Couldn't connect to MySQL" or something like that?

nah, with vBulletin I think you get a fancy schmancy error message and I get an email that says "can't connect to MySQL" or something like that.
