    BRINK INFO

Brink is a Class-Based Shooter that features a parkour-like movement system called SMART, tons of Customization options, lots of guns, leveling, perks, a unique art style, and possibly a kitchen sink. Playable by up to 16 players on 8 different maps, BRINK comes out on May 10th (May 13th in Europe) for the PC, 360 and PS3. Brink is being developed by Splash Damage, whose previous work includes Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.

    setting.jpg
Brink takes place on the Ark. Built in the near-future as part of a contemporary green vision, the Ark was a model for sustainable living. The massive man-made floating city became a home to the scientists and thinkers focused on making the vision a reality, while its wealthy patrons built a recreational paradise. But soon the threat of a global environmental crisis became real: glaciers melted, sea levels rose, and the very survival of humanity was threatened. Thousands from around the globe fled to the Ark as a last hope. Refugees clung to survival however they could, while the original founders and their descendants struggled to maintain the island.

Now, existing in 2045, A whole generation has grown up on the Ark, and while it was originally supposed to house around 5,000 people, it now houses around 50,000. Now, the Ark has lost contact with what remained of the mainland and exists in total isolation. As the Ark's supposedly renewable resources dwindle, the balance of power threatens to unravel and throw competing social factions into a horrific conflict.

    THE FACTIONS

    SECURITY: PROTECT THE ARK
Back when the Ark was a floating five star eco-resort and R&D eco-science park, it only needed a small corporate Security team to perform risk management and VIP protection duties. But as the seas rose, and the trickle of refugees to the Ark became a flood, the Ark needed a police force and then an armed gendarmerie.

Ark Security has now expanded into a heavily armed counter-terrorism force. Most Security personnel have volunteered because they're convinced that for the Ark to survive it must have peaceful order and conserve its remaining resources. And the extra water ration comes in useful too. Resistance provocations have forced Security to clamp down on Guest unrest, which has lead to the Ark teetering on the brink of outright revolt.

    RESISTANCE: FIGHT FOR THE ARK
When the seas rose and coastal nations fell into panic, boatloads of refugees fought to find the Ark's secret location mid-ocean - only the lucky ones survived the trek. Initially, they were happy to have survived and gratefully accepted the cramped temporary housing, water rationing and dangerous maintenance jobs. But as the years passed, and conditions worsened, the Ark's new "Guests" came to question the status quo.

Are the Ark's Founders really doing all they can to re-establish contact with the outside world? Why are only the Guests on rationed water? If their work keeps the Ark afloat, why are they second class citizens? The Resistance formed from those sick and tired of being the Founders' captive workforce; they want equal water rations for all, and to use the Ark's dwindling resources to reach whatever's left of the World. Growing Guest unrest has led to Security crackdowns, which have brought the Ark to the brink of civil war.

    gameplayk.jpg
At its heart, Brink is a spiritual successor to Splash Damage's previous two games, Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory And Enemy Territory:Quake Wars. Two teams battle over a series of linked objectives, one team attacking, the other defending. Objective types include destruction, capture-the-flag/item, escort and many more. Sub objectives like opening up side routes or capturing command posts can also be completed to give either side a tactical advantage.

    SMART
The SMART system, or Smooth Movement Across Random Terrain, is arguably Brink's biggest and most unique feature. This video details the basics of SMART.

    SMART Movement Video
    Classes
    The Basics:
Soldier: Distributes ammo, plant charges, throw molotovs
Engineer: Deploy turrets, repair gun emplacements, plant and defuse mines, buff friendly weapon damage
Medic: Heal, revive and buff teammates
Operative: Disguise, hack turrets / doors, spot mines

    Class Gameplay Video
    Body Types
Body type can be changed between matches in the Customization menu, but cannot be changed while in-game. Medium is the starting type, Heavy is unlocked at Level 5 and Light at Level 8 (supposedly).

Medium: The starting body type. Can perform basic parkour and some advanced parkour like wall climbing. Medium amount of health. Can use Assault Rifles and SMGs.

Heavy: Big, fat, and hard to kill, heavies are the tanks on the battlefields of the Ark. Extra health, but at the cost of only being able to perform the most basic parkour moves and slower movement speed. Able to wield heavy weapons like miniguns, autoshotties and grenade launchers, as well as assault rifles.

Light: Running here there and everywhere, the Light class are the darlings of the SMART system. Able to climb anywhere, jump off walls and get to places other classes couldn't dream of, the light trades lower health for increased mobility. SMGs and Pistols are the Light's tools of the trade, along with a handy knife for close up melee kills.

    Game Modes
Brink can be played in Single Player, Co-op or Multiplayer. The story and gameplay are the same in each mode, and the missions can be played in any order (though there is a story progression through both of the 8-mission campaigns). There is no traditional on-rails single player story against waves of enemies.

There are also challenge maps that can be completed to unlock weapons and weapon attachments. Challenge maps will reinforce basic gameplay mechanics as well as teach advanced gameplay techniques, and will feature multiple levels of difficulty.
    customization.jpg
Customization is Brink's other big touted feature. You can tweak your character's look, voice, clothes, weapon loadout/attachments and perks. Like an RPG or MMO, you can have up to 10 different characters, each with their own look and perk loadout.

THERE ARE NO FEMALE PLAYER MODELS IN BRINK. SORRY, THAT'S JUST THE WAY IT IS.

    Clothes
There are supposedly hundreds of pieces of clothing and character customization options, including tattoos, piercings and headgear. Clothing options are faction specific, and you can customize the look of each of your characters (up to 10) separately. Clothing items are unlocked by earning XP and Leveling up, which is accomplished by completing just about any action in the game.

    Weapons
Weapon and attachment unlocks are only obtainable through completing challenges, which are short bits of gameplay used to teach both basic and advanced tactics in the game. Not a lot is known about what these challenges will be, but we do know there will be at least one parkour/SMART course. There are an unknown number of attachments and customization options, but there are 24 base weapons to choose from. It's also been rumored that weapons can be used by any of your characters, which if true means you only have to unlock a weapon or attachment once.

    Perks
Not entirely dissimilar to COD's perk system, each player gets to choose from a set of perks at the start of each round. Perks can be generic, like increased health or damage, or they can be class specific, like faster healing or hacking. There are 58 perks available in the game, but only 20 unlock points per character (20 levels). You can have up to 10 characters, so making characters with different perk loadouts is strongly advisable. You can reset your perks in the customization menu, for the cost of one level.

TF2 spychecking will make it's way into Brink in some form. I mean, how much more viable is the operative over the spy?

Considering how he does stuff with enemy corpses? Somewhere between a lot more and a lot less. I never had any sucess in W:ET with them, but then again, I suck at the spy too

So, how does the multiplayer work exactly? I know there are a number of objectives across the various maps and you sort of choose which one you'd like to go for. Is the team that completes its objectives first the winner? Are the objectives linear? Like control points in TF2.

Also, the game has 3 different things to play: The single player campaign, the challenge modes and multiplayer maps/objective gameplay.

Is this info correct? Game looks like a lot of fun.

Yeah, it seems thee are several phases. The different sides have different, competing objectives. The newest Get Smart movie showed a little bit "transport this object" objective gameplay, which looks sort of like CTF. And there are escort objectives, destroy/build this objective while the other team tries to stop you.
