What? Pre-Pax Hookah Meetup!
When? Thursday, August 25th at 8 PM-2AM (people will probably arrive at 8 and then come and go throughout the night)
Where? The Cobra Lounge Seattle,
1122 E Madison St #102
Why? Cause we want to smoke some shisha and chill playing the best games with the best people in the world; PAXers! Sorry Stoners, no weed.
More info: This is a 18+ event, and a mandatory $5 lifetime membership fee to the Cobra Lounge is required, unless you are already a prior member of any of the Cobra Lounges in Washington (Tacoma, Seattle, or Bellingham). This is also a BYOGame event, Munchkin, Super Munchkin, Zombie Dice, Farkle, and maybe a few others will be on hand, but more are encouraged! We hope to get enough people to rent out the whole place, but if not, we will just mob in. Either way this will go down! Cost for renting will be posted later, but if we mob in, expect about $30 to last you the night, plus any drinks or food you might want. Bowls are 1/2 off after the first bowl, and we may be able to work out an "All-you-can-smoke" deal with the owners. And please, follow Wheatons Law: Don't Be A Dick! The owners are friends of edg2000's, so if this goes off good, we can turn it to a yearly event!

This would fall under the Washington State Tobacco and Smoking laws. Basically you would need to look at the smoking in public places law. That is about all i can share with you on the legalities of it.
Anyway, every time I've been at PAX, there has been a hookah being smoked outside in the smoking section at some point.
I exclaimed "Khoo is my Sensei!"
So if memes make great shirts,
And Pod Six is Jerks,
Then Moe, Khoo and I had our day.
Smoking section hookah party takeover anyone?
I don't have any details right now, I was more just probing to see if this was an idea the community would be interested in
Well they are actually quite different(I think). Never having smoked from a pipe or bong I can't quite say that that for certain. But a hookah is a water pipe with a bowl on top you fill with shisha (a sticky, flavored tobacco). There is either a cover or tinfoil covering the bowl and coals are placed on top of that to light the tobacco, So essentially it is a slow burning, mellow, flavored way of smoking tobacco.

RCW 70.160
Prohibits smoking in most public places and workplaces and requires that smoking occur a sufficient distance from entrances, exits, windows, and air intakes to insure that smoke does not enter a protected space.
"Public place" means that portion of any building or vehicle used by and open to the public, regardless of whether the building or vehicle is owned in whole or in part by private persons or entities, the state of Washington, or other public entity, and regardless of whether a fee is charged for admission, and includes a presumptively reasonable minimum distance, as set forth in RCW 70.160.075, of twenty-five feet from entrances, exits, windows that open, and ventilation intakes that serve an enclosed area where smoking is prohibited. A public place does not include a private residence unless the private residence is used to provide licensed child care, foster care, adult care, or other similar social service care on the premises.
Public places include, but are not limited to: Schools, elevators, public conveyances or transportation facilities, museums, concert halls, theaters, auditoriums, exhibition halls, indoor sports arenas, hospitals, nursing homes, health care facilities or clinics, enclosed shopping centers, retail stores, retail service establishments, financial institutions, educational facilities, ticket areas, public hearing facilities, state legislative chambers and immediately adjacent hallways, public restrooms, libraries, restaurants, waiting areas, lobbies, bars, taverns, bowling alleys, skating rinks, casinos, reception areas, and no less than seventy-five percent of the sleeping quarters within a hotel or motel that are rented to guests. A public place does not include a private residence. This chapter is not intended to restrict smoking in private facilities which are occasionally open to the public except upon the occasions when the facility is open to the public.
Sorry about the wall of text. But as long as we are 25 feet away from a building were good so we could maybe go to a park or something cool like that. Also the pax smoking section takeover idea sounds good
Park is not a good idea unless you are going to use one of the larger/less used ones. Last year they passed new code of conduct:
Article: http://www.seattlepi.com/default/article/Smoking-to-be-banned-in-Seattle-s-parks-897864.php
Source: http://www.seattle.gov/parks/ParkBoard/briefings/code_of_conduct_revised.pdf
3.2 Violations of this Administrative Rule
The following conduct is also expressly prohibited by this administrative rule.
3.2.10 Smoking, chewing, or other tobacco use within 25 feet of other park patrons and in play areas, beaches, or playgrounds;
I don't think you can be arrested for it, but you could be fined or at the very least forced to leave the park for 24 hrs.
The security guards sometimes are a hassle at the centre, thinking we're stupid enough to bring an entire tin of pot or whatever in a bright container for the shishah. All I can think of is finding someplace to give out those little plastic mouth pieces if you don't feel comfortable sharing/passing the hose around. (which I haven't ever actually been able to find, but they'd be handy/a good idea anyways)
Other than that it's pretty decent. Haven't been rained out in any of those prior years, I met a ton of cool people, and usually the more interesting personalities come outside for a smoke and chat too.
With luck you'll see me there, the 6'2" ghostbuster.
If anybody is looking for those plastic tips for the hoses, I know two places.
One is pretty close, the international smoke shop right next to McDonalds
The other one is further, but you can take the monorail right to it. Beanie's Smoke shop in Seattle Center definitely has those, bought them for folklife
I got a few of the easy light coals, they work with a standard lighter, though aren't as long lasting as the bricks. If someone is interested in coordinating this thing, that would help. Got plenty of mouth pieces, shisha, and coals, just need to know who to speak to about it all later. :P
Also know that you can buy shisha online, but does anyone know of a place in/near seattle that happens to have a lot of different flavors?
I've found that ones that are flavored after a fruit that has a certain level of bite to the taste (raspberry/cherry for example) tend to be the best. Shishas with flavors like vanilla struck me as just kinda bland.
I don't know of any places in Seattle that sell shisha but two brands of shisha I have found to be very good are Fantasia and Inhale
nah they aren't really sneaky, they require some setup, and time to smoke but you can go to a hookah bar I guess
It's tough trying to recommend flavors since everyone has different taste, but I highly recommend Guava, Melon/Honeydew, and Mint Chocolate Chill/Chip. All those flavors taste exactly as they sound and are very distinct, especially the mint chocolate chip which tastes like your smoking a york mint patty. As far as brands, I highly recommend Fumari (fumari.com) for their flavors. Has yet to let me down, and they keep putting out new flavors (though the original ones are still the best).
@tsrblke: The smoking experience itself is usually a lot more flavorful, cleaner, smoother, and can last for a pretty good while, depending on how many people are smoking from it. If you are looking to try hookah out in the wild though, your best bet for a good first time would be at an actual hookah lounge. A lot of Mediterranean restaurants (out in my area at least) have started advertising hookahs with your meal, and some of them are very poorly done.

Well, assuming it's necessary, I can bring a hookah and whatever the max allowance is on importing loose tobacco in Saudi shisha. People tend to like double apple a whole bunch, but it tastes kinda licorice-y for my liking. I much prefer white grape & mint.
I'm sure there will be more than enough shisha and hookahs to share. And just as an fyi to people you don't need to bring stuff, it's just REALLY helpful.
also I think as a side note , whoever has a hookah should ID people just to be safe first in case the police roll up you don't get tagged with a supplying tobacco to a minor fine...thatd blow.
This actually seems like it might be a great alternative! Instead of setting up our hookahs on the street like a bunch of hobos. You should try and get us the hookup on a rental of the lounge! Because that would be a kickass option!

Yea i'm not so sure waht all comes with renting the place out. It might just be exclusive use of the building, or just a section. It would be awesome if you got like X amount of bowls and x amount of shisha. The prices here are steep for your first bowl compared to where I normally go, but these guys seem to know what they are doing so It still looks all good.
(note to self; get a count of how many people are coming)
Most hookah places don't let you rent entire areas out, unless they have the room for it. If anything, a few people could show up in groups of 3-4, and grab a hookah per that group. And on what Pillarofdawn was saying, yes, a headcount for people that are really interested in this would be helpful. Let us know so we can start making preparations. I'm not exactly in the area, but I'll try and contact whichever lounge you guys decide on, and see what we can get going.
@drspacemonkey2: I hear you on the double apple, but double apple with mint has usually always been a winner in my group of friends for some reason. Melon and White Peach are others that rank up there pretty high for me, though I'm still trying to find a good Jasmine flavor.
@edg2000: Thank you very much for posting the links. With the Seattle lounge being less than a mile away from the convention center, this seems like the best choice, unless someone else can weigh in? Like I said before, I'm not a native, so I can only go with the information provided by google/yelp. :P

And perhaps not actually renting the lounge out and maybe making a reservation instead. Idk if hookah lounges do reservations or not but we can see. Also I just thought of the process of cleaning my hookah out and carrying it through downtown....I lold. I'm so anal about keeping that thing clean :
