Marvel August 2011 Solicits

edited May 2011 in Graphic Violence
no teasers this month, full solicits are up

-That Avengers #16 solicit, nooooooo.

-New Avengers #15 smells of Secret Invasion filler, and I kind of knew Bendis couldn't help himself to make a "Squirrel Girl does it all" issue

-Ghost Rider #2 brings back the boobs, although having the new character "stand her own against Sin" seems a bit too much of propping up a new character a la Red Hulk, Daken, etc.

-Greg Land still on Uncanny, giving "O" faces on the cover.
-Speaking of Greg Land, his Thor #5 cover is just him tracing and recycling his own pose of Cyclops and Thunderbird (traced from his Ultimate Power work) from the Uncanny #500 cover

-This is a nice Hitch cover for Ultimate Fallout #6:

ultfall006_cov_hitch_02.jpg

-Bendis and Bagley's Brilliant looks like it will be monthly now instead of bimonthly.

-John Byrne FF and X-Statix Omnibus

-Marvel's collecting Nicieza's X-Force run, that's cool

-They are collecting Howard Mackie, JR jr. and John Byrne's Amazing and PP:SM relaunches from '99

Looks like Van Lente's Amadeus Cho and Power Man story is happening in The Home Front
The teen analogues of your favorite Avengers -- X-23, Spider-Girl, Power Man and Thunderstrike -- find themselves stranded on a weird island in the middle of the Pacific. Is it their greatest fears come to life ... or the birth of a powerful new super team

Which means this story is essentially being written just for me (except for Thunderstrike)

I hope there isn't a "squirrel girl does it all" issue

Those kind of issues are a bit crappy

Squirrel Girl is only funny in strict moderation guys

All of those solicits sound really dull, and it sounds like Fear Itself will just sort of be slipping into standard event fare? And possibly bringing everything else down with it.

Ultimate Fallout and the Ultimate relaunch are awesome, though.

Spider-Island looks pretty cool, but I was kind of knocked back a little when I saw it. Had no idea it was going to be that massive.

Okay this has been bugging me

I know Marvel's pricing is a little off, but most of the time the 3.99 books have a back-up or a few extra pages, etc.

    sometimes they don't.

But this Moon Knight is kind of ridiculous. It's first issue was 3.99 and it was 40 pages, so that is fine. Issue 2? 3.99 for 42 pages. Less fine. I would be a little miffed, but not upset.

Then the other two Big Shots titles have now been solicited, and each of them have a large issue 1 for 3.99 but the other standard issues are 2.99.

The only reason Moon Knight is 3.99 is because Bendis' name is on the cover, really

    Hawkeye and Spider-Woman? What shit.

On top of Fear Itself tie-ins we have Spider-Island tie-ins.

On the bright side we are getting a load of Jason Aaron book and X-Force continues its twice monthly shipping.

I'll read "The Deep" if just for a two headed Tiger Shark

Unlike previous preview art, Adam Kubert likes to believe skeletons have breasts. And hair.

Can't wait for the next (Red) Hulk and I never thought I'd type that.

I'm usually indifferent to the Squirrel Girl phenomenon but I'm very curious about Deodato drawing her.

And I was starting to like that Land Thor cover despite the possible mountainous manchest tracing, but now I wish Coipel did the two covers instead. Oh cruel world.

-Holy shit that's a lot of books.

-The $8 Avengers Academy/Spider-Girl/Young Allies comic has been collected into a TPB, bundled with two old reprints, and is being sold for $15. Well played Marvel.

-God, I hate Greg Horn's covers. Everything he draws looks like it's made of shiny wax.

-Hulk v.s. MODOK. Why yes, I want that.

-Fucking Purple Man. Somebody punch that dude's head off already.

-I'm not a big fan of JS Rossbach's Thunderbolts covers. They don't look bad, everything just looks a bit washed out and hazy.

-Ultimate Comics Ultimates is the dumbest name I've ever heard for a comic. And I own a full run of Extreme Justice.

-Emma Rios and Nick Spencer on Cloak and Dagger? Nice.

-Thor: Heaven and Earth sounds like a bad PSA turned into a comic.

-Oh fuck, Phil Urich's old series is being collected! Now everyone can read it and see how much Dan Slott fucked that character up.

On the other it is being written by Johnny Hickman

    Which is pretty great

If I start buying them monthly, it'll be Ultimate Ultimates probably. I like team books.

But I'll almost certainly be picking all of them up in trade. Maybe not Ultimate X-Men, i'll see how that goes, but Ultimate Hawkeye, Spider-Man and Ultimates all look very cool.

    What? A Green Goblin trade?

    Finally!

Will it contain his 2 Spidey crossover issues?

What about his Spidey/Malibu comics crossover?!?

(I own all of these in singles. Also, for the record, Phil saying everything is WHACK, was about 3 years out of date for slang at the time. I guarantee Tom DeFalco's grasp on writing young people sounded just as bad then as it does now. It's part of the charm.)

I honestly can't remember the last Marvel book that I purchased that wasn't Fantasic Four/FF by Jonathan Hickman, but I will be picking up Cloak & Dagger as long as I don't have to care about the spider crossover to understand it. Nick Spencer made me care about the THUNDER Agents, so I'm sure he can make me care about C&D.

It's good and very original, not really an X-Men book at all but more corporate superheroes and how they're manufactured for TV.

It might seem a bit common now, but back in 2001 it was really original, the first 6-7 issues of Milligan's X-Force (which became X-Statix) really stand out as anything could happen, and it's worth a look if you liked Nextwave, for instance.

It also has one of the best lines in any comic I've read, where the team is fighting the Avengers, and Anarchist and Captain America are fighting and they're on a thrid world island where Cap is trying to act all respectful to the people, and Anarchist just jumps in and kicks him while screaming "white liberal guilt!"

In that same arc, Iron Man and The Orphan are forced to get naked for their own brawl after landing in a nudist colony.

Too bad there's no mention of bonus material in there, though. I already have the X-Force hardcover and everything else in trades, so I can't justify the purchase.

Prepare to be sad when the art goes from Scott McDaniel to Josh Hood.

    So very, very sad.

The GG series was the first time I ever cared about the art, as the differences were shocking enough to be noticeable.

Slott picked it up and ran with it in a big way, when it should have probably been quietly brushed aside.

Sorry to use this example twice in two days, but it'd be like Chris Roberson referencing Superman being brain-washed into making a porno with Big Barda, in the next issue of Superman.

I don't have a huge attachment to Urich or anything (though I did enjoy the handful of issues I had of that series, when I was a kid), but this Hobgoblin nonsense just struck me as a waste of a pretty good character.

That is a really unfair comparison, Munch. The Superman Barda story is what, two decades old? And mostly ridiculed.

The Loners is like, five years old. That's a lot less time for someone to pick up a storyline.

Plus, Urich is a minor character who probably had very little, if any, appearances between Loners and ASM. Barda and Superman are both fairly prominent characters that have been in lots of series since the awful porno story.

I think Phil Urich has more potential as a villain than as a hero, but the transition from dopey loser to homicidal maniac was just too sudden. If Slott had spent more time developing him in the background before making him into Hobgoblin, he could've shown him buckling under mounting stress and humiliation. This would've made Urich's transformation seem well-earned and made it easier for the reader to appreciate Urich as a goofy, deranged Spider-Man of crime, which is clearly what Slott wants.

I just feel like we already had a perfectly good Hobgoblin laying around, so why not just use that guy? Or if you want to play the reverse-Peter Parker angle, it's not like there aren't plenty of characters that could have been slotted (no pun intended) into that role.

Conversely, the idea of a guy that found some supervillain's equipment, and then made a run at being a good guy, while literally wearing a bad guy's face, holds a lot more appeal. It's one of those neat, high concept ideas. I'd have rather seen a return to that idea, than a generic, cuh-raaazy supervillain.

Really though, chalk most of this up to a mix of childhood nostalgia for the heroic Goblin, a total loathing for the amazingly shitty Loners, a mild distaste for Slott's more recent writing, and my noted problems with the current Spider-Man status quo.

I like the concept of a hero adopting a villain's legacy, but I don't think it could work for the Green Goblin now that Norman's alive again. As far as I'm concerned, what Slott's done with Phil is the only viable way for the character to remain in the superhuman game.
