Damn, Bale, do you just sit around with autism level precision bizarrely self annotated versions of these books or what?

I read Game of Thrones for the first time in 1996

I've had a lot of time to absorb

I'm reading the first book again. I barely recognize any of the shit that goes on and I seem to have forgotten almost everything from the later books.

well I've also read all the books multiple times since then

I have the books visualized well enough in my head that I can usually tell when the show is deviating from the books.

The biggest cuts/changes so far have been to dream sequences and direwolf scenes, which makes sense for production reasons.

I completely forgot about Stannis rocking up at the Wall. I remembered Jon getting elected and I remember the wildling attack but I completely forgot about Stannis. You'd think I'd remember something as important as the location of one of the kings.

Yeah it's a pretty big thing that happens how can you forget this. It's like forgetting that Han saves Luke at the end of Star Wars.

I have to say, if I had only seen the show, I wouldn't have as much sympathy for the Starks. TV Ned, Jon and Bran just don't have the same depth without being able to hear what they're thinking.

Although Sansa and Arya are pretty much the same.

Yeah Ned really suffers from it. In the books he's a man haunted by grief, the death of his sister and the tangential but yet very much related deaths of Rheagar's wife and children (especially how the latter died) hangs over him from page 1. He's still so horrified at the sack of King's Landing 15 years earlier that it's pretty much entirely what drives him when he refuses to consent to Dany's assassination, and again it's the reason he gives Cersei a chance to run - because he dosen't want the deaths of her children on his hands.

Oh, RE: the War of the Roses thing.
That's just one of GRRM's inspirations. He pulls from all over the medieval spectrum, both early and late. For example, the fight at King's Landing is pretty much the Norse siege of Constantinople in 941.

Oh shit I just realized something.

    (end of book 3 spoilers)
Littlefinger's conversation with his whores not only describes almost perfectly how he's manipulating Ned, it also applies massively (and more literally) to Tyrion and Tysha, and then much later with Shae. Who's probably showing up next week-end. Pretty neat.

He overheard Robert saying something to the effect that it would be more merciful to give him a clean death than to have him live as a cripple. He wanted to impress daddy.

So Joffrey's sense of mercy is to have some random simpleton stab you.

    Yup, pretty much.
Remember this was all planned immediately following Tyrion bitch-slapping him.

Wait, no, that was completely accidental. He didn't know who the dagger belonged to, he just spotted it among the party's luggage and thought it looked cool.

Well there was (History of Westeros spoilers)
Ser Criston Cole, Lord Commander of Viserys I's Kingsguar. He placed Viserys' young son Aegon II on the throne despite the fact the Viserys has designated his eldest daughter Rhaenyra as his heir. This led to the first Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.
