If it goes through as designed right now, I think it'd just be best to macro it to a spammed ability like CS/HotR. It's a short cooldown, it's not reliable damage reduction (you can't use it alone as an "I need to take less damage from this" ability like a Chimaeron double attack), and the uptime is reasonable if it's just being spammed (33%).

Sure, sometimes you'll waste it and kick it off right as Argaloth is taunted by the other tank or you have to move on Al'Akir and he starts channeling that lightning beam, but at least you'll be using it a lot. If you make it a separate button you have to consciously hit and you're not always hitting it as soon as it's up/the boss is hitting you on top of whatever other responsibilities you're performing, then you're also losing a lot of its potential mitigation. Basically right now it seems it's just accomplishing the goal of "aggregate damage reducing ability," and just burning it on cooldown all the time will probably be good enough.

I don't really expect it to stay in its current PTR form, though.

Well, new WOW player and paladin here. I figured that this was the place to bring this question. I've just accepted a quest to get some linen from the bandits. I've had trouble with the bandits in Elwynn forest before, so would you say this is a good time to get a team together?

Also, I've just decided that I don't really like the name i've given my paladin, is there any way to change the names?

You should be fine doing that quest solo and yes you can change your name....for $25. At your level it's a helluva lot cheaper to simply make a new character.

Think hard on your name... but ya if your level 5 I'd just remake your character. What do they even give young paladins in terms of skills these days? Is it more than just throw up a seal and whack a mob for 10 minutes?

Yeah, now I wish I had gone with my first choice, but i'm gonna stick with this character for awhile anyway. Just got my first elite quest, now to find a team.

even without heirlooms you dont need a team for any quests other than the "arena" style ones in the expansions. Some of the escort quests you might blow some cooldowns.

You're probably right. I managed to beat that elite quest by myself (it wasn't that tough). One final question for now, i;m in Stormwind at the moment, is there anywhere here I can learn the "cooking" ability?

Also, you can ask most guards in any capital for directions to a large variety of people in their respective city. They'll put a waypoint an arrow and a waypoint on your map.

You get Crusader Strike right off the bat now, so that's kind of the main "thing" you're doing early on. I don't know if there's anything else in the first 10 levels beyond putting up a seal and hitting CS every 4.5 seconds and the occasional self-heal, but that's certainly better than things used to be.

Anyone know if there is a Rotational Addon for Prot like there is for Ret (CLCRET)?

You really, really should not need an addon for the prot rotation.

It's CS->Filler->CS->Filler->CS->[WoG if health is low, else SotR]

If you're specc'd into Grand Crusader, Avenger's Shield has a higher priority than CS, and you'll WoG/SotR more often. It's still utterly brainless.

Hey, has anyone had some problems logging on? I haven't been able to get past the loading screen for two days now. I knew something was wrong when I logged out one night while sitting in a cave, then when I logged in the next day I was dead.

Log on a different character and submit a trouble ticket to a GM describing your problem with your other character. If you can't log on to any characters, try the WoW repair utility.

I just hit 85 on my glorious tauren pally. When I got my war up to level 85, it took a while before I was comfortable in heroics. However, my pally has made the transition effortlessly. Am I a terribad warrior or are pallys better tanks?

  • DemanKnghtDemanKnght Registered User regular
I think it has to do with experience in the instances on herioc mode. I hgad issues with My warrior as he was my first 85. Then my Pally made it and by then I knew the fights pretty well so I learned to get out of the icky. Personally I like my pally tanking but my warroir is so much fun tanking too. Just need to be a bit more proactive on my warrior.

  • NyhtNyht Registered User regular
I have a Death Knight at 85 and just recently got 85 on my prot paladin. I have to say, I feel pretty comfortable with him in heroics too. Rotation is pretty easy and my only complaint is I don't feel in control of my health as much as I'm used to with DK. WoG every 20 seconds helps but as I said, not what I'm used to.

Also, does anyone know if prot paladins can pvp at 85?

No, you get kited to all hell, your damage isn't great because you won't be able to get a 3 stack of holy power to fuel a decent SotR, and your self healing is on a 20 second cooldown.

The only really viable paladin spec in PVP at the moment is holy. Ret can fake it, but anything Ret can do a DK or Warrior can do better.

  • fortyforty Registered User regular
Yeah, you can PvP, but it largely depends what you want to do. If you're just going to do BGs and TB, you can make it work. The most useful thing you can do besides carrying a flag or surviving at a node is locking down a healer. Between Avenger's Shield, Rebuke, and HoJ, you have a good amount of options for disrupting a healer. You won't really kill them, but in theory your team will be able to kill other people while you're tying up their healer. Priests are probably your bane due to psychic scream, but you should be able to stick to the other three healers pretty well.

Bumping the old Paladin thread because like a good heroin addict, I'm always back for more. I have to say after the mind numbing 969 rotation of WotLK, I absolutely love tanking on my Paladin again. One of the things that always made me want to scream ever since I was raiding Kara on my Paladin was not having an interrupt. I am the kind of person that wants to be in control when I tank, and I actually switched mains to my Warrior in WotLK just to have an interrupt and because I was so bored by my Paladin, in spite of it being my favorite class lore and utility wise.

I love having more cooldowns. Having divine protection, ardent defender, and GoAK is nice. I also love the new holy shield, making it more like shield block, and I actually like that divine guardian doesn't do anything for me anymore but I can use it to help the healer. That, combined with the always awesome utility spells like hand of sacrifice/freedom, and throwing down a holy radiance for a meager but still cool "heal while tanking" ability has got me in love again.

  • troublebrewingtroublebrewing Registered User regular
so I don't know if I'm just reading old stuff or what. I've been PVPing ret a little bit lately and stuff I'm reading talks about the utility and heals of ret.

Maybe I'm just missing something but I just feel like a 2 minute class and I'm not seeing alot of the utility, especially heals. None of my heals even feel like they're worth casting except LoH when it's up.

  • NobodyNobody Registered User regular
You have to have 2/2 selfless healer to really notice it. Even then it's only really good if your heal target isn't getting heavily focused.

The problem is a lot of our utility is tied to magic buffs, and dispel is very popular in PVP right now.

  • JoshmviiJoshmvii Registered User regular
Ret has a lot of utility in pvp with hand spells and stuff like that, but yeah, beyond WoG and LoH you're not going to be doing some impressive healing.

Are you using HoF and HoP?

  • troublebrewingtroublebrewing Registered User regular
HoF all the time, usually on myself though. I only do Random BG's for now. HoP, not so much I guess I should use it more.

  • fortyforty Registered User regular
HoP is really helpful if you have a pocket healer who gets jumped by a rogue/feral druid/warrior. Of course you're not playing with one, but if you happen to notice an effective healer on your team, throw it on him if you see him getting stunlocked or something.

  • fortyforty Registered User regular
Wow, holy paladins are fucking amazing for any sort of "all or most of the raid clumps up for mass AoE damage/healing" moments now. Holy Radiance spam is crazy output now.

If you were disappointed about your paladin's AoE healing performance, 4.3 is the cure.

  • NobodyNobody Registered User regular
I'm still chuckling over people crying over the wings nerf for Ret.

The static damage buffs we got (improved judgement modifier, improved damage from 2handers) more than made up for it in PVE, and in PVP if you got to keep your wings for more than one hammer there was obviously no dispeller anywhere near you.

  • The Dude With HerpesThe Dude With Herpes Lehi, UTRegistered User regular
Yeah I'm seeing no loss of DPS in the end from the switcharoo they did.

In fact I'd prefer my damage to be balanced throughout a fight without having to rely on a cooldown for a chunk of it and/or the last 25% of a fight.

I was looking at potential Dragon Soul raid finder gear upgrades for my tankadin, and got to the Wowhead comments on Souldrinker which are all, "Well, by this point you're probably well past combat table coverage and don't need more dodge/parry/mastery here." At this, I'm confused, as while I'm wearing a full set of 378 epics (with a few pieces beyond that), with mastery on almost every armor piece and other stats reforged into mastery on those that aren't, I'm still only at around 14.5% dodge, 15.5% parry, 60% block. A combined 90% seems like it's a bit lower than the 102.4% number I remember from years past (is it still 5% miss?), so where are tankadins getting the full coverage from?

    SabreMau on
  • NobodyNobody Registered User regular
    It's 5% miss.

Is the 60% with raid buffs?

The stam trinkets would be the most obvious things to replace to get more mastery/avoidance.

Anyway, how useful are eternal glory/guarded by the light for tanking? They seem like interesting talents to take, but it's hard to work them into a build.

  • GrobianGrobian What's on sale? Pliers!Registered User regular
Since WoG has a cooldown, Eternal Glory is basically only a threat/damage talent and that's just not that great. Guarded by the Light is good and I think many tanks take it. Dou you spec into Hallowed Ground or Reckoning? Points for GbtL could come from there.

  • SabreMauSabreMau ネトゲしよう 판다리아Registered User regular
The stam trinkets would be the most obvious things to replace to get more mastery/avoidance.

I thought about that, but with the two highest +mastery trinkets from non-heroic raids (and I don't raid) that would get me to just about 70% block at the cost of ~20k health. Out of things I actually run right now, the best mastery trinkets within reach are spellpower items and a 346-level blue.

  • fortyforty Registered User regular
Are there any other avoidance stat trinkets? Even a dodge one reforged to mastery would get you a few points closer to 102.4.
