Everytime I see the new comic up without a thread I get so paranoid that I'm going to post a duplicate thread that I literally refresh SE++ like 10 times before I post it. Of course, had I just posted it, I would have went up first.

I wonder what it says about me that this feature strikes me as something I honestly would do. Other than that I'm a servile crone.

well, I can only assume that it's a step up from (pretty sure) fable 2's co-op, where it didn't even let the second player use their character. everything else seems to fit though.

    I was the same.

I mean really. "Let's put co-op in our game" - "Okay!" - "let's make it utterly pointless for the co-op partner!" - "Okay!"

Why even put it in there? Who wants that? Unless it was a technical limitation they came across rather than a design decision, in which case just leave it out because, again, who wants it?

I feel like this is an inherent problem with making a sequel to a co-op loot driven action RPG when you are a developer who is famous for story

"well we can't allow players to create their own characters, they have to play this specific named character because this is his story, and it wouldn't make sense to have two of the same guy at once, that would be silly, and all the other characters in the party are playable but are also named and voice acted and no one who is playing through the game will really give a shit about their stats, so why bother having players import them for co-op, so whatever, just let them play the host's supporting characters!"

It's a fucked up train of logic that doesn't necessarily go off the rails, but just goes to a place through a really complicated route that no one in the right mind would want to go to at all

@Sabre: it's just cupped right beneath the ball of lightning magicks

It threw me for a loop too, at first, but all the weird shit you're seeing is just electro lightning nonsense

Bizarrely, Fable 3's co-op was one of the few redeeming features of the game.

Sadly, my opinion of Dungeon Siege has been based entirely on its co-op, peaking out at "oh, it has co-op?!" before plummeting with the revelation that hah, barely.

I tried the demo last week. The story was so generic and boring that I was unable to finish it because of how uninterested I was.

I work at Gamestop and I've had several people come in and cancel their preorder based on the demo as well. Obsidian has done a fantastic job of unselling their game.

I enjoy co-op games where I can fuck-up player 1's progress (by shooting an explosive barrel while we're standing right next to it, for example). Wonder if you can do this in this game.

This is probably why I'm usually not allowed to play and am bestowed the title of Beer-run Bitch.

Who out there actually has anything positive to say about this kind of gimped co-op? What would possess a game designer to create a 2-player experience like this?

Diablo 2 had 8-player co-op with persistent characters eleven years ago.

    What is their goddamn problem?

The sad truth is that Obsidian has never released a game worthy of its Black Isle roots.

KotOR 2 was an unfinished, rushed nightmare with a lot of really good game improvements, which are easily lost and forgotten when the story collapses on itself about 80% of the way into the game.

Alpha Protocol, while having some brilliant ideas and a fantastic decision making system, was horribly flawed by bugs, terrible AI, and a whole host of other problems.

New Vegas was simply not as good as Fallout 3, despite some improvements to the game mechanics, and Obsidian failed to fix or improve on many of the game crippling bugs that were present in FO3. Oh and New Vegas had a whole slew of new bugs as well.

Seriously. Pretty much every game could learn something from Secret of Mana.

And, yeah. The day someone makes a game that is essentially Oblivion co-op will be the day I give that someone all of my dollars.
