A stereotypical muslim villain would likely be more than a little racist and offensive to the muslim population within the US. Likewise, a hero going into the middle east and swooping in and single handedly taking out Osama Bin Laden or whatever would seem ridiculous and cheapening of a real world issue.
As stated, war isn't this celebrated propagandized machine of good vs evil anymore; war is morally complex and severely damaging to everyone involved, be it physically or psychologically. Having a comic character fly over there and win instantly is totally cheapening and challenging the experiences of actual combat vets and of the good men and women on the ground both from the armed services and the civilian populations.
And one of the few recent stories I can think of that treats the challenges in the Arab world with any respect is David Goyer's super-controversial tale of Superman standing peacefully with the protesters.
Right, it is complicated, but there's nothing wrong with demonizing Al Qaeda, or Syria, who murder, rape, pillage and whom are hated by everyday Muslims who like to not get murdered, raped, and pillaged.
It just seems no one is willing to try to show that in a comic, which is a shame.
If you're telling me Steve Rogers would be against ordinary Syrians rising up against their torturing, mudering corrupt regime in a new drive from freedom and peace... well, I just don't know what to say.
If you want Cap to beat up torturing, murdering, corrupt rapists overseas, he'd be beating the teeth out of a lot of US soldiers and US-employed mercenary groups, not just insurgents. Also, this:
Batman vs. Al Qaeda! It might as well be Bin Laden vs. King Kong! Or how about the sinister Al Qaeda mastermind up against a hungry Hannibal Lecter! For all the good it's likely to do. Cheering on a fictional character as he beats up fictionalized terrorists seems like a decadent indulgence when real terrorists are killing real people in the real world. I'd be so much more impressed if Frank Miller gave up all this graphic novel nonsense, joined the Army and, with a howl of undying hate, rushed headlong onto the front lines with the young soldiers who are actually risking life and limb 'vs' Al Qaeda.
The only time I want to see an overtly Islamic villain in a comic is if the protagonist and preferably the original creator is Islamic as well.

Not at all, but someone who understands the issues and nuances of an area and peoples very well is apt to writing a much better story from it, and even more so when it comes from the heart or personal experience.
I guess part of what I'm saying is that I would like a number of creators with more diverse backgrounds to appear and tell the stories of diverse characters, because as we've seen in the past, a lot of times "diversity" in these books can be completely hamfisted and characters sometimes end up treated like gimmicks or tokens.

Agreed. So only Muslim writers are qualified to write Muslim supervillians? Why doesn't the sample apply to Buddist/Christian/Jewish heroes/villians? Do you see the impossible double standard there? Again, it boils down to not wanting to piss off 'the wrong people' which is stupid. There are more than enough bad guys in the world to avoid giving the worst extremists a free pass.
Putting it this way, when the comics code was around, looking back, do we say, "Gee, those rules that you couldn't show X, Y, Z in a comic were great for the industry?" or "Man, those guys were nubs for not having the guts to write about whatever they wanted to?"

If freaking Frank Miller can write Daredevil as being Catholic, I don't see what the problem is with a Super Villian having a Muslim background beyond knee-jerk journalists.
SO I read the most recent Cap story that hit the trade market, forgot what it was called but it was the Zemo story that had everyone up in arms. It was pretty good but the normally great Butch Guice was off his game a bit with the action scenes.
