You know, boinking an alien intelligence posing as your female love interest, and is simultaneously your male mentor and a bunch of your knight buddies, can really, really complicate the "bros before ho's" theorem.

What Rifts is really going to need is a Psi/Cyber/Necro/Techno-Therapist O.C.C. "Please, have a seat on the couch and tell me about your trans-dimensional, vampire, mystical psychic mother who was also your alternate reality time-travelling father/son...."

I read that as "What Rifts is really going to need is a Psi/Cyber/Necro/Techno-Rapist O.C.C." and I was all, "don't the Splynn have that more or less covered?

In the Rifts world, pretty much everywhere has that covered.

Good gravy, I knew there were a heap of RCCs in this system, but I hadn't realized it had gotten that insane. And some of them are so hilariously situational, it's a wonder that they even spent time developing sections for them.

I mean, how many grand, dimension-hopping adventures are you going to have as a Killer Whale? First mission you have that pops you out to anywhere landlocked, and the rest of your group is going to be spending their time splashing water on you to keep you alive. Or, they'll just be very well-stocked on provisions for the next campaign. Mmmmm, whale steaks!

Underseas produced a lot of stuff that just straight wasn't an option elsewhere. I don't care how badass that Dolphin of yours is, he's not going to be much help hunting vampires.

A personal favorite of mine that I'd forgotten about; Coalition Mini-Monkey Spy R.C.C. (Lone Star, p.82)

A squirrel-size monkey with a 3 foot long prehensile tail that is genetically designed to be the perfect infiltrator. Armed with a laser scalpel.

Yeah, but if you think about it, exactly how many vampires did you see underwater? Ah ha! Perhaps the dolphins are the best vampire hunters!

....or, you know, the whole water thing. Guess that could play a part in it. Maybe. I'd still keep my eye on those dolphins, they're just lulling you into a false sense of security. :P

Rifts is just so much fun; not playing it per se, just the setting and the often times unintentional hilarity that came from its' creators. The monkey one is so silly (I never flipped through the Lone Star book, had no idea they had that sort of thing in there).

Well, usually the -taur suffix means the lower body is a horse, so i'm guess a horse that has a psychic dud instead of a head.

If I recall correctly, Underseas not only had the whale and dolphin RCCs, but also had specialized power armors for them to use.

Which again, pretty badass when you're 20,000 leagues under the sea; less so when you're trapped in the middle of the Sahara Desert.

Underseas had a new system of MAGIC only useable underwater. I think at least two. Also you could just choose a shape-shifting dolphin who could turn into a human. Or a blue whale. That's right, not only 5 Cetacean RCCs, but five more which were naturally MDC and could shape change.

One of the least lame of the -taur races they produced, actually. Of course, it comes a page after the mutant capybara that can alter the flow of time with its mind. South America 2 was kind of a strange book.

I don't know about that. I mean, if you're designing powered armor for magic dolphins (I'm assuming they're magical) why wouldn't you give it legs and the ability to move over ground?
Also, a torpedo/missile launcher. And beam cannons. Huge beam cannons that can carve your mark on the moon.

Surprising part? Word search of that list showed no instances of the words "seduce," "succubus," or "tempt."

I guess manipulation/influence is straight-up mind control or nothin'.

So, WB 5 is Triax and the New German Republic, WB 6 is South America 1 (aka CJ Carella blows away any sense of balance), WB 7 is Underseas.

IMO, Underseas should get it's own writeup, I mean the US Navy has a big ass underwater carrier floating around. (And yes, you read that right, the US Navy).

Triax & the NGR is my utter favourite world book. As I think I've mentioned before. Probably repeatedly.

    Power Armour gets me going.

I believe Underseas had that OCC where they could turn SDC attacks into MDC damage against supernatural evil creatures. It doesn't take much effort for that to get out of hand. But otherwise I wasn't a big fan either.

Lonestar, however, was pretty sweet. Always liked the other animals, particularly the big cats. I might still have a Siberian Tiger one rolled up, and I think some of them, the Bears and a few others were capable of being naturally MDC/dealing MDC damage. They were pretty hardcore.

I'll do a write up on Underseas after I move and get my internet back. I always loved that setting, as I am quietly unsettled by anything deep sea. And boy does it pack some truly horrible stuff in there.

Plus, you know, Sea Titans. Once you've got them, you never need to be a squishy, regular human ever again.

I was thinking that Underseas was a weaker book in my mind, but reminding me about Sea Titans, yeah, it had some pretty crazy stuff in Underseas. Am I right in remembering that the aircraft carrier of the new navy was also a submarine? 'cause yeah, that + super invincible navy guys + robo-dolphins *snicker* + whatever else, in hindsight, is all kinds of crazy awesome.

I don't remember what the major menace was though. Killer plankton? Giant sentient ball of ocean trash? Sunburn?

Yeah, it's still something that I find absolutely menacing to this day. The idea of a giant something down in the Marianas Trench, with a dozen or so massive, Pacific Ocean-spanning, octopus-like tentacles--which themselves have thousands of smaller, man-snatching tentacles that emerge from each sucker--that just randomly accosts denizens of the sea has always terrified me. It's basically Cthulhu in Rifts, but much more terrible.

Then there are the Naut'Yll and Horune pirates, the latter of which had a specialized citizen who literally dreamt up their ships. Like, made them corporeal.

Yeah, it was an interesting, if self-contained, setting.

I think that's why I never had anything to do with Underseas. It completely avoids contact with the rest of the setting.

Most of our campaigns were midwestern/western/Mexican in location. So there was some reason to look at Triax stuff, as it would be on sale out there, but the ocean was a non-issue.

Not completely. I managed to tie it into what was generally a land campaign via coastal village. If you're out toward the west coast in the New West setting this is especially feasible. Managed to take a merc campaign that direction and had them fighting off Naut'Yll slavers and being saved by the New Navy. So, it is possible, it just takes a bit of creativity to get there.

Never did get to use the Lord of the Deep, though, much to my chagrin. PC's just never reached a high enough level while roaming the high seas.

I really dug the undersea book. CJ carella (is that how you spell his name?) might have brought the crazy power creep, but his books usually had a bunch of really fun ideas in them. they had dolphin and killer whale demi-gods who could shift into humans for 2 hours a level a day! it was like playing a dragon.... but underwater. and they could wear them some power armor, cause clearly. also, yeah "we're the US Navy, and we're still okay down here! don't worry about us!" was great.
