    well you have a pretty good understanding of forms, just not how to describe them with global value. What I mean is you are rendering every form with a full greyscale, compartmentalizing it. A still life is a good exercise to help you learn to see/think in global values.

    Even if its a stylstic choice, and you are not going for a realistic lighting situation, you could group your values a bit better to form less chaotic patterns. Make things a bit easier on the eye.

    I agree with you completely, and I have been wondering how to get darker values on paper. I have tried using an 8b pencil, but the qaulity of it did not give me the precision I wanted. I do not know if it is a usual trait of 8b pencils but the graphite was...soft? I generally use mechanical pencils as I cannot stand dull tips.

    Any ideas to achieve darker contrast? Also I think doing proper line art to plan my shapes would help with the chaoticness (not sure if that is a word?), currently I am just going straight into cross hatching to create the forms. I need more patience.

    Pencil maxes out at a certain point. Charcoal/ink will yeild you your deepest blacks. But before you go that route just work with the tools you have. Your value scale will just be abbreviated and you will have to be more careful with where you choose to execute your darkest dark. Keep in mind your area of highest contrast will draw the most attention. Contrast of value, pattern, big form little form, big shape little shape.. etc etc..

    Ive seen his art before and love it, but no worries I love the cross hatch I am currently working with too much. It just needs the refinement you've pointed out.
