Interesting question, as Arkane was one of the few Source Engine supporters (they used it for Dark Messiah and were going to use it for The Crossing) but now that they're owned by Zenimax (who essentially bought id for the sole purpose of having idtech for the companies new internal engine.) one would think they would go with idtech.

God, I still can't believe id software got purchased. No matter how many times I hear it, I still have trouble processing it as an established fact.

You mean how the water looks kind of like rippled glass? Yeah, I can see what you're talking about.

And I like the art direction in that screenshot, it's nice.

So far, we've detected (though not confirmed) influences of Deus Ex, Thief, and Half-Life.

Looks like Source to me too. Which I approve of, because Source is pretty forgiving when it comes to older rigs.

But seriously, dominance of kicking aside, Dark Messiah's first-person melee combat was just downright wonderful. It was one of the few games where I'd replay fights just to get to try something different out.

Although if I recall its last thread was basically all about how Tube and the rest of us hated spider fights

That looks way too good to be the source engine. The hand also looks wrong for it, it looks bump mapped.. And the water looks like not a series of squares :P

Source engine does bump mapping, IIRC. Check out the ant-lions in HL2.

There's every chance I'm completely wrong about Dishonored being Source-based, but yeah, Episode 2 at max-everything looked pretty fantastic with all the bump mapping and dynamic lights and... stuff.

Oh yeah, I know it does bump mapping, but it does it awkwardly, with a really distinctive look.

I didn't realise it had true dynamic lighting though. I thought source just had stencil lighting, which in some way isn't truly dynamic.

That character is reminiscent of Zeno Clash. A bit cartoony, with similar looking skin. My vote goes to Source too.

A good thing: Source games are always so crisp looking and smooth.

    I'm liking the art direction.

But, every time I play one of these games it usually results in me sitting in a corner for 50 minutes watching the guards move around. Then when I finally decide to move, I'm thinking to myself 'hey! I can just jump here, get on that, then crawl across that plank, drop down the other side, and I don't even have to bother with the guards! '. So I go ahead and try out that plan only to get cockblock by an invisible wall. So basically the game is forcing me to go against my better judgement and sneak past 40 heavily armed guards, instead of going through that awesome backdoor with 0 guards. Fuck you game.

The GI cover story article was an awesome read. I love that this takes place in an alternate reality based on 1666 London where the primary source of energy is whale oil. That's going to play heavily on my emotional state when playing, I'm sure. Also, it makes some sense that those guys are using stilts, what with the plague-carrying rats infesting the city. Also, the fact that the developers don't fix things that are "broken," but instead take the inclusive approach and modify to allow those things is pretty great. I don't think I've ever read of a game being developed in that way before.

Consider me stoked! I love the idea that how much violence is used will change the game, not necessarily for evil/good endings, but just reactions. I would love to see enemies get afraid if they realize you're the guy who slaughters a whole garrison, or for targets to get really paranoid because their friends were all assassinated with expert professionalism despite ludicrous security.

Metro 2033 was the last FPS game that had good stealth that I've played. It the was the right compromise between realism and fun gameplay for me. I know I might be the outlier on that feeling. If they would only try the sneak suit...

This sounds too awesome to be successful. I always get worried when I hear about super ambitious games like this, because they usually try to accomplish too much and don't get there.

What is this I don't even.
