I couldn't help but feel the fight and ending were a little rushed, but I still liked overall.[spoiler:12a2ee8b4c]The re-appearence of Manhunter, the "throw it into the sun" line, and an all-out battle between superheroes/villains against an army.
I guess they took the term "anti-life" equation literally, rather then to mean it takes away all free will. I always thought an interesting way to do Darkseid in for good was to give him the anti-life equation, let him suddenly realize that by simply knowing it, you fall under its grasp, and then have someone order him to destroy/banish himself.[/spoiler:12a2ee8b4c]
Okay, first of all, Jordyn, your episode write-ups are exquisite. Like porn for the soul some would say. By some I mean me and my soul. Second of all, I finally watched the last episode, "Destroyer" tonight. It was pretty good, but I need the ending explained to me because I don't know enough about DC lore. I assume that Darkseid is rocking the whole Thanos-obsessed-with-death-thing (or vice versa, I have no idea who was created first), but I didn't think the anti-life equation would be a spinning magic glowy dna-helixy type thing. I thought it would be more like a literal equation, like a formula for turning lead into gold. But no, for some reason the formula has a crazy physical manifestion, which leaves me a little baffled. And why did touching it supposedly kill Darkseid and Luthor? Did Darkseid just want to die? Because, see, he was already dead, so can't he die without the anti-life equation?
I did think it was pretty cool that Luthor showed up to die in his old bad ass business suit. I assume he knew he was going down, so he went down with style, as well as maybe giving a shout-out to before he was totally crazy (pre-brainiac days). Plus, Darkseid headbutting superman was fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. Now, every episode without headbutting in it is a little lower in my standings. I really liked the bit with Darkseid whipping out the kryptonite knife and wanting to carve out Superman's heart and putting on a pike by his throne. Honestly, I'm a little upset that he didn't go through with it. Last episode, might as well go out with a bang. [/spoiler:b2a34e15f5]

[spoiler:4d1d48ebb7]In a nutshell, the Anti Life Equation, when harnessed, gives the user the ability to dominate the will of someone, by having them believe that there really is no point to living. The definition varies a bit by author, but that's pretty much how Kirby explained it (Darkseid was created first by the way).
In JLU, I believe the writers explained that they needed to make the Anti Life Equation an easily understandable thing for anyone of any age to get, so they simply made the user (s) disappear. Darkseid and Luthor didn't actually die, however. At least it hasnt been proven. [/spoiler:4d1d48ebb7]
Man, I'm kinda depressed now that the last episode has finally aired in the States..
[spoiler:24f5bbb767]Timm & Co. talked about the anti-life equation somewhere, I think it might've been in article about Twilight. They felt they needed to give Darkseid a goal and the equation was that. Problem is, they went back to Jack Kirby's old stuff and couldn't actually find a good definition as to what that equation actually was or would do or anything.
I think my favourite part was J'onn coming back. It's no secret how fond I am of him. I was absolutely overjoyed when he showed up. There are not the words to express how happy I was. Especially since I had heard that the plan was to not bring him back at all.
Let's hope by the time I get to the commentary on this episode, I won't be as down about it being the end of the series. Hahaha, no I'll still be sad.[/spoiler:24f5bbb767]

I think the best example of this is in the episode when they attack the legion of doom to save Batman and superman flies into the building through a wall, 2 feet from the door. I laughed uproariously at that one.

To be honest, I didn't like this episode quite as much as the previous one, "Alive!". While it is an impressive spectacle (and believe mere, from a perspective of pure action it's incredible), it just seems a little empty in comparison. A very simplistic "good guys, beat up the bad guys!" compared to some of the narratives we've had over the years.
Of course, it might just be because I've never seen and episodes of the Superman series. I had no real connection to the Superman/Darkseid conflict, whereas the Grodd/Luthor was something that was built up greatly over the course of the season.
But I'm coming off as rather negative. Honestly, as an exercise in action, this is probably one of the most impressive things to grace a screen of any size. It's like each scene is in competition with every other for "best moment", and the winner is the audience. Incredibly exciting to watch, and there are a ton of moments you'll still be geeking out about afterwards. In particular, I enjoyed;
[spoiler:890c99ab9b]The Question. When he was preparing to go into action, I thought "what help could he possibly be?". And then I saw it. It's even better when you realize he must have stolen that car.
Sinestro using his ring to create a Godzilla-esque monster. Looking back, we didn't get nearly enough giant-ring monsters from John over the course of the series.
Bizarro fighting the aliens. No reason, other than that anything with Bizarro is inately entertaining.
Martian Manhunter returns!
Anything with Batman VS Darkseid. You've got to hand it to the man, he's not going to let something like odds keep him from doing his job. I especially like him refusing Luthor's pistol, saying it "Isn't my style".
And of course, Superman letting loose on Darkseid.[/spoiler:890c99ab9b]

I have to agree that last seasons end was probably the best possible end to the DCAU, but obviously they couldn't do that again. I meant what I said as in "this was the best end they could think of given their situation", which is that they had already used their ending last season. Running on the context of the present as opposed to the past, that is.
As for the Direct-to-DVD; you're refering to Superman, right? We still don't know where that fits into the DCAU, if at all, but it seems like it would be somewhere in the middle rather than the end.

In this episode, GL is accused of blowing up a planet, Ajuris 5. He has to go stand trial on Ajuris 4, with this crazy prosecutor, voiced by Kurtwood Smith who you may remember from That 70's Show.

It was also kind of cool to see the Detroit League head down the stairs together; that was the JL that I started following the title with.
Yeah, Elongated Man, Fire, Ice, and Booster Gold came down together too. Fun little touch. We also finally got to see an animated Blue Devil's face.
I was slightly peeved that the 7 Soldiers and the JSA didn't all walk together. There were so many characters absent from that sequence.
Er... I thought they did. Yep I'm watching it and Stargirl, S.T.R.I.P.E., Crimson Avenger, Shining Knight, and Vigilante are running in a group, there's your Seven Soldiers.(Green Arrow's in the later, Sattilite Era JLA group). and Hourman, Dr. Fate, Wildcat, and Dr. Midnight are running together, there's yer JSA.
I got the first volume of Batman TAS the other week and just watched right through. Its been too, too long old friend. I'm ashamed to say there were some episodes I missed as a kid that I saw for the first time. Adam West's Gray Ghost was superb tribute to the man, and the second Clayface episode was particularly well animated. Much love for the reimagined Mr Freeze and Clock King too.
But Im having trouble finding the subsequent volumes, places like amazon.co.uk and play.com dont list them, instead having the older volumes of 4 episodes each. For some reason there have been multiple Batman TAS DVDs here, but not the nice collected ones of 30ish episodes. Finding this one seems to have been pure luck, and Id rather save money over the net rather than buy off the highstreet. Anyone in Britain know anything about the other volumes?
Also, on the cover of volume 1, why is everyone in the Bruce Timm style, except for Joker who looks like he did in that comic where he kept talking about boners?

Oh, man, Clayface. When I was a kid, those episodes haunted my dreams.
The scene where he's force-fed the shapeshifting goo? The fight where he drowns Batman inside his own mudlike body? I rank his appearances as some of the most memorable anything from when I was a kid.
Mike Mignola came up with his character design. It totally shows.
I would love to see the actual designs by his own hand.
I liked Clock King though, they threw out even more to redesign him. I liked how Batman tried to reason with him, saying "The mayor has commited no crime against you!" and he just turns and says "He did worse than that Batman! He made me late!"
Memorising the movement of the clock gears to evade Batman with ease was neat too, and leaving a tape to tell Batman that everything he was about to try would take too long.

But Im having trouble finding the subsequent volumes, places like amazon.co.uk and play.com dont list them, instead having the older volumes of 4 episodes each. For some reason there have been multiple Batman TAS DVDs here, but not the nice collected ones of 30ish episodes. Finding this one seems to have been pure luck, and Id rather save money over the net rather than buy off the highstreet. Anyone in Britain know anything about the other volumes?
Also, on the cover of volume 1, why is everyone in the Bruce Timm style, except for Joker who looks like he did in that comic where he kept talking about boners?
Mike Mignola came up with his character design. It totally shows.
Oh, man, Clayface. When I was a kid, those episodes haunted my dreams.
The scene where he's force-fed the shapeshifting goo? The fight where he drowns Batman inside his own mudlike body? I rank his appearances as some of the most memorable anything from when I was a kid.
I would love to see the actual designs by his own hand.
I liked Clock King though, they threw out even more to redesign him. I liked how Batman tried to reason with him, saying "The mayor has commited no crime against you!" and he just turns and says "He did worse than that Batman! He made me late!"
Memorising the movement of the clock gears to evade Batman with ease was neat too, and leaving a tape to tell Batman that everything he was about to try would take too long.
No more Diniverse shows?
