So I finally found an intact copy of Ace Combat 2 at my local EB the other day. The difference between these last two games and the first two is absolutely astounding. Hell, the difference between AC2 and 3 is pretty huge by itself.

I was actually on my way to Best Buy this morning to pick this up along with Ace Combat 5. My collection has swollen immensely in this past month, but I couldn't be happier with it. Those screenshots of Zero look so fucking amazing. I can't wait to dive into it. Should I get 5 out of the way first, though?

Zero is a short game. I think it's worth it if you're a fan of the series though. So if you want to beat a game relatively quickly, pop in Zero first. 5 will take you longer to beat than Zero.

Reviews have said that the story for Zero is "meh." I really loved the story of 5, and the idea of interviewing "aces" seems interesting. What's the verdict around here?

I thought it was alright. The live action cutscenes were a little cheesy, but it fits with the melodrama of the rest of the game. I think the real strength of Zero is in replays. In order to see all the rival aces, you have to play the game at least three times.

For comparison's sake, I like the story of the games in this order: 4>5>Zero. Still, all three games have some fucking great moments that make the purchases worth it.

The final battle of Zero is worth the price of admission alone.

Just picked up 4. It feels different than 5, but I'm really liking it.

    Spoilers about 2 missions:

[spoiler:5d026fa200] The strike against Stonehenge was awesome, but the end of the mission where you kill Yellow 4 made the victory bitter for me. I felt bad easily taking down a damaged plane. I was suprised that in the mission "Escort" one of the civillian pilots is "Nagase" with the same voice actress as the one in 5. Kinda interesting that the debriefing states that the families on the planes were given amnesty by various countries...I wonder if it also applied to the pilots...[/spoiler:5d026fa200]

AC4 is a great starting place, it's the series' high point in my opinion. That said the three PS2 ones are excellent starting points as almost all of them are standalone. However, AC4 is regarded as easily the best, with the latter two following shortly behind.

I think you can pick up AC4 and AC5 for like thirty something dollars now. They are well worth it though.

Myself, I found AC5 to be about a million times better than the first half of AC4. I only played the first half as I found it dead boring compared to 5.

I thought 5's story was pretty lame, personally, but I'm not into anime which could explain it. I loved 4 as it felt fairly realistic to me and I felt I was the one making a difference, not some generic character that disappears during cutscenes. I haven't played Zero yet, mainly because I had such high hopes for 5 and it kind of took the wind out of my sails. I should probably buy it, since I believe I saw it for $20 now. I should give 5 another playthrough, though, since I bought the set with the flightstick around Christmas time and haven't tried it with 5 yet.

I just finished 5 last night.

I agree with Carcass on a few things. Mainly just that it sucks to be a disappearing character in the cutscenes, but I didn't think that it bogged down the story too much. One thing I would've liked to see:

[spoiler:dd343f9c08]A bit more development of the rivalry with you and Hamilton. I pretty much ignored him during the "Death Star run" level, and I wasn't exactly motivated when he died. He was a pretty generic nemesis, I thought. All in all, though, that level was really fun despite being initially frustrating.[/spoiler:dd343f9c08]

The mission variety in 5 was pretty good, I felt. I really enjoyed the boss-style battles.

    On to Zero!

[spoiler:78f366de2b] Yeah, I wished for more of a duel with Hamilton, kinda lame that he just dies on the way out. I did kind of had mixed feelings about his death, though. He did seem genuinely kind to Gennette. If the developers went along with that more, I think the character would have been better. Plus, I swear Blaze is the pilot Chopper is talking to in the briefing room cutscene at the beginning of the game. Or at least, I like to believe it's him.[/spoiler:78f366de2b]

4 felt way more epic than 5, but 5 had a lot of fun missions also. I loved Sea of Chaos. The music was just perfect.

I'm also a sucker for ground assault levels. I love having lots of immobile targets to blow up.

Ironically, I thought the final squad of those dozen-odd planes in AC5 were easier to take out than the Yellow Squadron from AC4, but maybe that was just because I had a solid lock on three of them before they even reached me.

4's finale wins over 5's, but 5 was still great, and the story was deeper. (But AC4's still-only cutscenes were very classy. :^:)
I also have to track down Zero now.

Just out of curiosity, what were the first 3 AC games for? PSX?

[spoiler:595f7e4182] Bartlett? I thought he ended up with the Major. I personally believe she had the child with Blaze, but for some reason I think it's plausible that she ended up with Grimm. Really don't know why I think that, heh. [/spoiler:595f7e4182]

EDIT: Haven't played Zero, but I agree with the above statement. Kinda stinks that I'm gonna have to shell out money for a PS3 to play the next gen Ace Combat. I really wish Namco would make it multi-platform. And I'm back to playing 4 again. I keep on humming the music that plays when you fight Yellow Squadron.
