So uh...maybe she's not one for sketch comedy?

I have seen pretty good actors host terrible episodes of SNL

I've seen her do some funny skits and stuff too, and her voice in the Lorax trailer isn't very bad

I mean I am not a huge Taylor Swift fan or anything

but she has been in like maybe 3 things and they were all pretty small, "terrible actress" is a bit strong

This looks cute. I barely remember anything Dr. Seuss related outside of Green Eggs and Ham so I don't have any predisposition for or against the voice actors but there's yet to be a Danny DeVito role I've disliked.

Realistically you could have two, career voice actors do every character in a film like this.

    Nolan North.

    Just Nolan North.

Nah, you need a female voice actress to be able to do both females & children.

A solid pairing is Billy West and Tress MacNeille.

And if there are any animals you call Frank Welker.

for younger characters you need Will Friedle and either Grey DeLisle or Tara Strong

True although I would still prefer a more experience voice actor if I was throwing an entire film's work on their shoulders.

I would rather have Danny Devito voice The Lorax than any of those people
    Sorry

And that is totally up to you but there are better voice actors out there.

I mean if an animated project didn't feature female or children characters Frank Welker could do every role & a fair share of the sound effects.

I mean Danny Devito is awesome but he is no where close to the divinity that is Frank Welker.

Is it that crazy to be skeptical that a musician might not be the best voice actress?

    Well yeah

but I mean we aren't saying Devito should voice every character in the movie

Welker is a great voice actor. A fantastic one even. But there are people, even some that aren't exclusively voice actors, who could do individual characters better than Welker's version probably.

I am looking forward to Devito voicing the Lorax though. With the style they are taking on the character Devito's signature style and career reputation will give a lot of life to the character.

Swift sounds okay in the trailer

Its Zefron who sound pretty off and that's more because he's so obviously older than the character

I dunno what it is with American movies and making teens look/sound like twentysomethings, its happening to The Borrower Arietty's English dub too

I continue to say that Disney (and their contemporaries and imitators [SKG]) learned the wrong lessons from the Lion King.

Basically, it all comes back to how excellent Robin Williams was in Aladdin. And believing that the profits were made from star power rather than the ensemble talents of Ashman/Menkin as well as the unearthly talent of a true auteur entertainer backed by dedicated voice talent into animated roles. And then they followed up with The Lion King, where their take away lesson were that you can get even more marketing mileage by supplanting dedicated voice talent and songwriters with 'headline stars' and still be critically acclaimed and (more importantly) profitable.

This was the wrong lesson. Because that was the point they started hiring people with little to no experience making musicals, or voicing animated characters and started making profit-driven marketing decisions instead. The rot was not apparent at first, but by the time you hit Phil Collins you realise that actually there's a goddamn reason Menkin has more Oscars than John Williams, Hans Zimmer and Danny Elfman combined. Rather than making good movies with the right people cast to do the voices, they embarked on a drive to sign a 'recognised name' to every bit-piece role they could find to cram as much marketing power in behind their promotion of a film.

Is this necessarily bad? No, sometimes people have the range to do voicework, or are cast excellently. But it's still a matter of getting the right people to do the right job, and far too many 'stars' have been shoehorned into roles that simply don't work or come alive because they couldn't make the transition from camera to voice talent. And the whole time, this vast cadre of talented voice actors goes begging and uncelebrated.

I mean, do you even remember who voiced Jasmine in Aladdin? Beast from Beauty and the Beast? Can you try and imagine what it would be like if they wanted to cast those iconic roles today?

I don't know... I am sort of twisted in both ways because the Genie in Aladdin is so wonderfully acted. I mean Robin Williams knocks that role out of the park.

But so much of that role was Robin Williams being Robin Williams as a Genie. There wasn't really a separation of character & performer. I think Devito and Woods handled that problem a lot better in Hercules where every once in a while I'd forget it was them voicing the character. The genie though, nope.

I am guessing they are gonna do cases 1-1, 1-2, and 1-4 based on that trailer.

I saw the girl from 1-3 if that's what you mean.

I don't see how you can put all four cases in a movie, and you need a case to establish Maya before you do episode 1-2.

And if karma's in it you know 1-4 is in.

yeah, between Karma, the DL-6 mentions and the boat scene, 1-4 is a gimme

we see Mia die, so some variation on 1-2 will have to happen

I agree with you as far as doing four cases in one movie being a stretch

maybe they'll do some sort of montage that features other characters from other cases as a fan service thing?

I think what that trailer needs is approximately 100% more Dick Gumshoe.

I did appreciate the Blue Badger being in it though.
