Karate Kid is supposed to be a major player in Countdown, so they'll explain it in there. I guess he didn't die because they didn't really bring anyone back from the dead, they just pulled Wally and family out of the speed force.

Read into Brainiac 5's words. At the very last panel, that's not B5's reflection in the tip of the rod.
That's a trapped soul.
The purpose of the trip was to go into the past and retrieve whomever is trapped in the lightning/speed force, and bring that person to the future.
They succeeded; the Legionnaires got who they wanted, and he is trapped in the lightning rod.
Who is it?
My money is on Barry Allen, but others speculate that it is Bart Allen (doubtful).
Wally West and his family emerging from the lightning strike is (1) an unintended side-effect and (2) a distraction for the JSA/JLA to focus on instead of realizing that the Legion has someone trapped in the lightning rod.
Now, I don't know why Karate Kid, Dream Girl, and Starman have stayed, but they have something to do with Countdown.

also I got Catwoman #68 because the solicits said it ties into Countdown but it didn't
it was the end of an arc
the only Countdown "tie" was that Holly was in it
but it wasn't bad
now I just have to pick up the other issues
