Dr. Todt smiles reassuringly at the woman and takes out a pen and pad.

"Thank you, Mrs. Morgan. You're too kind. In order to help your husband, however, we need to know when exactly he started acting, well, not himself. How long ago was it? And what did he do, exactly? What I mean is, in what ways was your husband not his usual self? Can you remember any specific instances? What medication was he taking?"

Following the assistant out of the office, Mathew paused, " I did not mean to imply that your were not operating within protocol, I am just trying to make sure I do my job. If I have offended you I do apologize." Mathew then walks quickly out of the office opening the folder he had been handed.

Mrs. Morgan grabs a box of tissues from the desk of a distracted secretary and moves to a chair in the corner of the busy office. "Oh bless your hearts, I just...you can't imagine how frustrating this has all been. My husband is missing and they act like it's just a Tuesday! Oh, out there...all alone. Maybe...maybe he was kidnapped too! Some man, out there preying on the weak! So many cruel people out there..." She stares into her lap for a moment before looking back up. "Now what were you saying? His health? Oh, Jerry always had a healthy appetite. Especially the beef, and the bacon, and a fair bit of wine. He had to stop golfing...6? Yes, 6 years ago. The strain they said. And then there was the attack 2 years ago. Some bypass surgery and the like. I tried to change his diet, but he would just sneak more while he was at work. A stubborn fool when he wanted to be. This last attack nearly did me in as well, I was so scared. I just praise God that they were able to find him a donor so quickly.
I don't think he really started acting strangely until after the surgery, but then, he was unconscious before that. I don't know exactly. The doctors all said it was post-operational depression or some such. But where would he get the notion to start speaking like some drunken Irish hooligan? And the screaming. I came to visit him last week and he just started screaming. When they finally calmed him down he was speaking in some language I've never heard before. Since the surgery he's forgotten who I was every few times I've seen him, and once he called me Louisa, that...that kidnapped girl. And that ghastly letter. I think...I think the surgery did something to his mind! I think the doctors have hurt my poor Jerry's brain! Oh god! I hate this place!"

As you sit in the waiting area, you skim the folder on Dr. Morgan. Some of the information was covered in the dossier you received on the flight. The highlight of the new information is the listing of projects he was overseeing. MXD - A new state of the art armored personnel carrier currently being prototyped. The ANN-346 - a new assault rifle undergoing initial test trials, aimed at becoming the new US military standard rifle. Veridian Initiative - a program working towards creating arable lands in barren or over-farmed land. ITRS 3 - A new targeting chip for cruise missiles. It also notes Dr. Morgan as the principal design lead on the Nexus semi-condutor project which completed research and testing sixth months ago.

A guard taps you on the shoulder and leads you to a small room on the ground floor. The room is bare, with plain beige walls. In the middle sits a computer terminal on a cheap wooden table with a metal folding chair. Next to the terminal is a note with your log in information and some fairly basic general procedural guidelines. The guard stands just outside the open door.

As you move closer, one of the officers casually brushes the door, muffling the sound. You can make out a few words, however.

The guard pulls a walkie-talkie from his belt. "Yeah...we're going to need a...better chair down to room 12? No, I don't know what's wrong with the chair, just get a nicer one alright? Christ." A bald little man with an APD windbreaker brushes by you and into the room. You can hear the conversation much clearer, and you see him unroll a large white paper. "Wait, wait! It's all finished. Mr. Hernandez, are you sure this is the man that attacked you and took your daughter?" He holds up the paper, and Mr. Hernandez shudders a bit and nods before turning away. The face on the police sketch, barring a few slight details, is Mr. Morgan's.

Mathew not waiting for the guard to answer sets down the hall back towards the entrance and the bathroom. Without any major mishaps he walked back down the hall to speak with the secretary.

The secretary seems as humorless and dour as the rest of the staff here. She walks you through the steps to reach an outside line, looks up the number for the hospital and returns to the memo she was writing when you came in.

"Albuquerque Presbyterian Hospital." The woman's voice on the phone line is strained, and you can hear a great deal of activity in the background.
    Captain Marcus and Peff
The stress is wearing down Mrs. Morgan, and you notice that she fills in the permission forms with a glazed expression on her face, barely glancing at the paper while she speaks to you. "I was at home, it was the middle of the night when he left. He was reading the same sorts of things he always read, I suppose. Engineering periodicals...a thriller about spies...some history book on ancient Egypt...I don't..." A secretary drops off a copy of Dr. Morgan's charts and Mrs. Morgan stands abruptly. "I think...I'm going home now. I can't stand this place anymore. Please, please find Jerry soon." Still looking dazed, Mrs. Morgan walks out of the office, nearly running into a passing orderly.

Hanging up, Mathew walks back to room twelve, "Hey mate I know this isn't what you want to be doing with your day," Mathew says as he approaches the gaurd. "I just want to say I know your here to do your job, and I'm here to do my job. I fully respect I'm an outsider here, and that I respect the work Dr. Morgan was doing and I and my team are here to help make sure everything possible is done for him. Now I'm gonna go get to work and I appologize in advance if I look like I am completely ignoring you."

With that Mathew heads into the room and double checks everything on his system, the connections, the setups, power, and checks to make sure nothing was tampered with while he was out of the room.

The guard shrugs without much enthusiasm and continues to lean against the wall. Another guard comes up with a padded leather chair, which scrapes loudly on the concrete floor as he places it down. "Here you go, sir" He says with no small bit of sarcasm before walking off with a nod to the stationed guard.
    Captain Marcus and Peff
"Paging Dr. Todt, paging Dr. Todt...please report to the nurses station. Dr. Todt." A voice comes over the PA system.
Javier absorbs the information on the chart after only a few minutes of skimming. The notes indicate that though the surgeon and anesthetist were fairly mediocre, Dr. Morgan recovered with admirable speed from the surgery, and was likely to be discharged in the next few days as fully recovered, barring his mental degradation. Given his health, he seems somewhat over medicated, and would probably suffer from a number of annoying, but not threatening side effects, but are mostly fairly standard medications for heart disease and surgical recovery. A few anti-depressants had been added in recent weeks, and there is a note from his physician, Dr. Weiss, about consulting with the staff psychologist about prescribing an anti-psychotic.

You also notice with some concern that there is no information regarding the heart donor or the doctor that approved the donation, which is legally required information. Just the name of a local organ bank.

You follow one of the uniformed officers who escorts Mr. Hernandez at a discreet distance. The man seems to be completely dazed, moving at a slow trudge through the crowd of reporters without even looking up from his shoes. With the guard watching, you aren't able to do any real thorough check of the computer to ensure it hasn't been tampered with. Instead you set to work working your way into the system. However secure the local tech guys think their systems are, it only take you a few minutes to worm your way into the full database. The sheer volume of files here is staggering. You could spend weeks pouring through the data, but you doubt they'll give you that kind of time. While you begin to pull the information tagged with Dr. Morgan, you notice a flashing file in the corner. It opens on its own after a moment. "Figured you make it through the safeguards. We should have a chat. Commissary in 2 hours, order a pack of Camels. -G"

The files you've pulled include information on the projects mentioned in his dossier, as well as a fair number you had not seen before.
    Captain Marcus and Peff
"Yeah, we got some message for you..." The nurse pulls out a memo. "Matthew. IRT -Mr. Morgan from EON. "Mathew has arrived and is setting up. Humor is in short supply here, they really don't want us here."

The files give no indication of any lingering infections or complications from the operations. The new heart seems to be remarkably strong, though there are some obvious risks involved for a man of his age with his medical history, especially so soon after a major surgery. The hospital psychologist had not yet had a chance to examine Dr. Morgan, but his initial notes on the symptoms and behavior described noted a strong likelihood that this went beyond simple post-surgical depression. The psychologist, Dr. Helman, suggests that Dr. Morgan may be exhibiting a separate personality, though he refused to speculate on the cause without a full interview and examination.

"Danke, nurse. Which way is Records?"

(assuming friendly nurse gives me directions to Records)

On the way to Records with Javier, Todt tries to think of what happened to Dr. Morgan.

"This heart donor should be a simple enough matter to clear up. It's not as if you can just waltz in with a heart in a styrofoam container and expect it to be used. It has to be fresh, blood type has to match, no diseases, et cetera et cetera. You already know this, why am I telling you?"

He looks over at his colleague with a ghoulish smile.

"It'd be pretty funny if it turned out to be the heart of a criminal, ja? Scientist gets heart, heart makes him go crazy, attack little girl, go missing, all that. I hope there haven't been any executions recently..."

"That was a joke, Javier. I was joking, don't look at me like that."

    Returns to the notes.

"Anyways, let's review what we have so far. Famous researcher gets sick. He gets mystery heart, but I'm sure we'll clear that up soon. Wife reports he's not himself. He writes odd note, goes missing. A little girl (who might be in the note) is attacked. Possible causes- temporary psychosis caused by stress. Rare, but our friend had a lot on his plate. Pills- nothing serious at first. Anti-depressants are commonly prescribed for post-surgical depression, nothing unusual there. This recommendation for anti-psychotic medication could be serious, could not. If, like this Dr. Helman says, Morgan is bipolar or schizophrenic, anti-psychotics would help him. Of course he covers his ass in the next paragraph! 'Cannot offer complete diagnosis without full evaulation' my ass, Helman. I've seen enough schizophrenics to know what they are and how to spot one as well as the usual causes, and I'm not so scared of malpractice lawsuits to not do my damn job. Sigh, of course Morgan's gone now, so any guesses we have are so much throwing ideas at a wall and seeing what sticks.

    Any thoughts, Javier?"

Not totally sure if he was kidding at first, Javier gives Todt a sideways glance. Noticing his colleague holding back a smile and couldn't help but let a small "Ha!" out.

"Now wouldn't that be something, I bet the company wouldn't have seen that one coming." shaking his head, holding back his own half smile from the terrible joke. "Well...pysch wasn't my strong suit in school but it seems that some of Dr. M's symptoms made Dr. Weiss think, at least in part, that it might be a mental condition. We can't ignore the possibility, especially given that letter."

"As for the girl...so far our only connection seems to be this letter and that they both disappeared around the same time. It's just as possible that Dr. M is a victim of either the same kidnapper or bad timing. We should probably see if any of the orderlies have seen the two of them together or shared a curtain in the recovery ward, something like that. Did you see what direction that kid we managed to scare off earlier went? He might be a good source." Javier finishes the last part of his sentence with a wolfish grin, clearly having enjoyed scaring the poor orderly they encountered when they first arrived a little too much.

Veridian Initiative - There is a fair bit of technical jargon and chemical descriptions included in the dossier which would take a fair bit more focus to understand. From you can tell from the files, at least half of the effort has been put into targeted crop denial agents. The reports make numerous references to Agent Orange and indicate the goal of creating a substance with a similar effect, but a far more subtle application. "While efforts to produce nutrient rich soil from drained or barren land has stalled, we have made significant headway in the matter of vegetation denial. Should such progress continue, I would expect a workable product within the year. -Dr. M"

The remaining files that you are unacquainted with are all tagged with fairly obtuse names. A few are labeled with simple alphanumeric codes, TN-9G and the like, while others are marked as Code Birch and Project Yacht. You select one at random.

Project Ticonderoga - As far as you can tell, this project does not have any one goal, but instead serves as an ongoing catch all code for experimental ammunition design. Some of these are fairly mundane: designs to improve penetration and range, lower velocities for decreased sound, caseless rounds, and non-lethal rounds for crowd control. A good deal seem to be far more questionable: feasibility studies on the use of rounds as chemical delivery vectors, tests to improve explosive yield on HE rounds and the burn duration of incendiary rounds, development of rounds designed specifically to maim, toxic rounds, timed explosive rounds and so on. There are also a few theoretical projects looking into weapons that sound like they came from science fiction: "screamer" rounds that emit a disorienting sonic pitch, strobe rounds, non-lethal shock rounds that incapacitate with a high voltage charge, and guided small arms rounds.

It has been nearly 2 hours.

In addition to his love of food, which his build and longing stares at the huge sandwich make plain, you can tell that Griffin is a man who has been given a position of minor authority and let it go to his head. He's a miniature dictator, and loves to lord his power over those who need something from him. Expect a fair bit of arrogance, sarcasm, and a susceptibility to undeserved praise and coercion.

With a casual sneer, Griffin shrugs his shoulders. "Sorry, Señor, but I'm a very busy man. Unfortunately 'we really, really want it' just isn't a compelling reason for me to waste my time digging around for a database, much less bother the hospital administrator over. "Yes, your time is valuable, and you are quite obviously on your lunch break. Sorry to bother you. I doubt the administration recognizes the worth of your computer skills. I do. I know how tricky databases can be, and how tough they can be to search. My colleague and I have had a long day. We're very tired. If you could somehow find the information we seek, given the complexity of that database, you can rest assured we would be grateful. Very grateful."

Dr. Todt leans over, making sure his fancy wristwatch is showing.
"Personally, I would be very impressed as well. I would recommend you to your superiors. And one more thing- I am prepared to offer you a bit of a bonus if you could find it for us within, say ten minutes. Now, please understand, I would never offer you a bribe. That offends both you and me. Tell anyone you want we were here; we're just doctors, not Sean Connery. However, at the facility where I work we understand how complex databases can be. We also understand how hard it is to search them, and how much our computer specialists are underpaid. So occasionally, if we are in a bit of a rush, we give them tips. It's a tradition."

Todt pulls out two bills from his wallet.
