What kind of health does a level 50 tank have, just for perspective? Pondering how effective that +3% endurance talent really is - the base value is 1 endurance = 10 health, +3% on that makes each point of endurance worth 10.3 health.

If we just assume 1,000 endurance = 10,000 health, that talent gives an extra 300 health.

As do bounty hunters/troopers, and the tank specs can spec into a charge.

Yeah, but you don't have any as a JK. That was the comparison being done; Wow warrior - Jedi guardian.

They gave Shadows force pull and guardians force push :(

Don't get me wrong, i loved my SW and my JK, but i don't find them currently on par with ranged tanks or other melee in any way or shape. I will play one with no expectations of it getting any better soon, nonetheless.

My second char will be a trooper tank for sure.

    EDIT:

One note about Force Leap. Afaik, it has a fixed animation duration thus talents like Force Clap (2 sec stun) or Stagger (+1sec root), which apply as soon as you leap, will only give you a marginal benefit once you land. Plus they both apply at the same time, stun and root.

You get something like ~0.5 secs out of the stun and ~1 sec out of the root for yourself.

Also, I remember these droids that would do an AoE skill that make me land a few feet away from them. Maybe it was AoE push back, i don't know, i just know that i would stop mid leap outside of melee range.

That's exactly my thought. I'm sticking with my JK because I'm a stubborn bastard. I mean hell, if I tanked successfully for years in EQ and WoW before the warrior changes in each of those games at least took steps toward fixing the class, I figure I can do just fine with what I've seen so far from my limited beta experience with a jugg.

How does "shielding" work for Trooper/BH? Seeing those talents that say they increase shield chance by x% confuse me. Does that mean that the chance of activating a shield is randomized? Can someone explain this mechanic a little more clearly to me?

  • Options
    EchoEcho ski-bap ba-dapModerator mod
Shields are offhand items. The typical ones i saw all had 20% chance to shield and a 20% damage reduction to the attack they shielded.

Talents improve that, and there are probably better shields.

  • Options
    LucascraftLucascraft Registered User regular
So you equip a shield item and every incoming attack has a baseline chance of proccing a damage reduction effect? And the baseline chance is improved by talents?

    Exactly.

    Yes.

    Shields are offhand slot itmes.
Every tank has a [5% (from shield) + 15% (from defensive stance) + Z% from talents + X% from shield rating] to absorb [20% from shield + Y% from absorption rating] on every individual attack.

One thing I could never quite figure out on my vanguard was the option of equipping a shield vs a "power generator". The shield had an obvious advantage to being equipped, but I was never able to figure out why someone would equip a "power generator" instead especially given that the two had the same stats usually. Does anyone know what the heck the "power generator" item actually does if anything?

It's a off-hand for extra damage and when you're not actively in Ion Cell stance (Trooper lingo) you're not going to take advantage of the +shield bonus of a shield generator. So Power gen is mainly for Tactic/Assault specs that won't be using the tanking stance. Power gen have better Aim stats than a shield gen too.

Ok so there seems to be a distinction made between Ranged Tanks and Melee Tanks. Does that mean that these are two separate roles in instances/raids or does it simply refer to the weapon loadout of the character, but the function is the same? I guess what I'm asking is, are there fights which specifically require a ranged or melee tank for a specific mechanic or boss gimmick? Or is a tank a tank?

There is honestly no difference between the two because as a Trooper/Bounty Hunter tank you will be in melee range for the majority of the time. All of your main abilities are used with 10 meters of the target.

this is dumb and here's why:

hiding the information doesn't mean the information isn't out there. It just means things are harder and take longer to figure out, and the information is therefore restricted to people with the patience/understanding to seek it out (and who are willing to run third party programs to track the data.) To which you might say "fine, let the number crunchers have their fun, who cares," but inaccurate, incomplete or just misunderstood information getting out is usually more frustrating for players than knowing how mechanics work.

So, for shielding...is it for every attack, or are there some attacks (FORCE LIGTNINZ!) that are treated as unblockable?

So, I must admit that my class/role choice in this is entirely based on looks, I wants to be a Jedi Shadow with the dual-lightsaber.

With that being said, this will be my first foray into the world of tanking, and I'm anticipating some growing pains, but I hope that not only will it allow me to look the way I want, but also provide a vaulable role and ensure shorter wait times in queues.

    Wish me luck.

I am wondering if, for my Jugg, leveling tank would be better/easier then actually going Vengeance. The amount of damage you begin to take in the mid 20s is borderline ridiculous if I am rolling in shit gear.

I don't know. The rage gain in Shien form is just so amazing (and rage in Soresu form sucks assssssssssss)

Anyone have any experience with this? Once I got to 29 or so I started to hate my life. Wish I had a second aoe

I got to 30, and stayed in Soresu form. I was invincible and it showed, completing the level 30 class quests at 29. The rage generation in the tanking stance isn't bad once you get used it it, in my opinion. Which may or may not be valid.

Before following any advice, opinions, or thoughts I may have expressed in the above post, be warned: I found Keven Costners "Waterworld" to be a very entertaining film.

    This.

I remember Diablo 2; it took months of datamining to uncover the inner workings of the game. But that did not stop character optimization. Not in the least.

Does anyone who played in beta have any feeling for how the Powertech does DPS-wise? It seems to me that being able to tank or melee or ranged dps would be pretty awesome for allowing flexibility in ops. As long as the dps makes it worthwhile of course...

I would be happy to hear how Powertechs do with leveling and tanking in both DPS and Tank builds as well.

Has anyone given tanking above the mid teens much of a shot yet?

Just wondering how tight aggro gets, as my Shadow build is trading some of the damage dealing in the build in the OP for some extra focus regen and CC.

I'm all excited to actually get to play around with talents instead of reading elitist jerks and calling it a day.

I had a Vanguard up to 32 last build. Pulse cannon (flamethrower for BH) really made grabbing and holding a group pretty easy. Though I also had the good fortune of playing with groups that let me run into the group before they unloaded. Lots of tools to get mob attention. The charge, grappling hook, and taunt all saw plenty of use. Leveling was pretty easy, had the DPS companion (Jorgan) till the mid 20s with no real problems of dying. From 30 and beyond I switched to the healer companion (Dorne), and while everything took longer, I was able to handle most things with little trouble.

Towards the end of the beta I switched my vanguard from shield spec to Assault specialist (never tried tactics tree), and the incendiary round made a big difference in my experience since I was wearing more endurance heavy gear. Not sure how it stacks up against merc/commando, but it helped get the tougher mobs down. Either way, I had no problem levelling in shield spec most of the time. Definitely going for powertech BH as my first tank.

In the last round of weekend betas I played a guardian just to see how it changed from my initial playthrough in the 1020 beta. I didn't have any problems at all generating focus in soresu. Since it generates focus via the player getting hit, I often found I had more focus than I had abilities that could use that excess focus.
