We're living in a golden age of human construction.

From the tallest of skyscrapers:

Burj_Khalifa_building.jpg

To the most swank of man-made islands:

320px-Palm_Island_Resort.jpg

And that's just in Dubai!

What does the rest of the world have to offer, you may ask?

"It looks just like the towers imploding," the New York Daily News quoted him as saying. "I think they’re trying to sensationalise it. It’s a cheap way to get publicity.”
Well...shit...

Anyone else wanna discuss this and/or other grand human projects?

    The statue:
The walls in the base are stairs on the outside which leads to the platform where the
storyteller begins to rise. windows punctuates various stairs for a bright indoor environment without any direct sunlight. The statue also has big rooms inside of it for reading, relaxing and other social activities. each big room has its own theme, be it a gold room, a crystal cavern, a green room or a room full of fish tanks, or the night views of Dubai.

    Technical aspects:
The statue can move its arms and head; this demands an articulate joint between the elevators and the floors on these critical points. the joints are similar in function to those seen in joint buses, and will guarantee an uninterrupted movement inside of the statue, even if he slightly tilts his head. the arms and head movement is controlled by computers and can mimic a prerecording of an actor for example. the rigid parts of the statue are made out of a steel frame structure with a cover of sheets of steel. the movable parts must be flexible, thus a material like rubber or silicon with a coating that mimic the glossiness of the steel is preferable.

It's a shame we don't hear as many crazy stuff coming from Dubai anymore.

A few years back is was all artificial islands and tallest skyscrapers on the planet and buildings made of cubes suspended on cranes and all sorts of crazy stuff.

and then they realized they don't have the infrastructure at all to support half that crazy shit

it's kind of pointless having the world's tallest skyscraper when you only have power and running water in the first four floors

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nakheel_Tower
In January 2009, it was announced that the project was put on hold due to financial problems.[4][5] As a result of the Dubai World 2009 debt standstill, Nakheel Group's financial problems increased considerably and the tower was consequently cancelled in December 2009.[6]

There's only so much money to be frittered away in superstructures.

However there's still hope for pushing the boundaries:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galena_Creek_Bridge
Once constructed, the 1,700-foot (520 m) bridge with its 690-foot (210 m) span over the creek will be the longest concrete arch bridge in the United States.[2]

The funny thing is, with a building that tall it's actually safer to jump off of because you'll easily hit terminal velocity. Lower jumps can be problematic because you may not be going fast enough for the chute to open properly.

I like the argument of, it's physically impossible to do that, not actual space problems but limitations with actual physics.

But I did it last time!

Last time you made something the third of the size.
