Deus Ex was awesome in so many ways, but the opening doesn't have much for those that havn't already played the game. Great music though. And if this thread were best game endings, Deus ex would win so hard.
Deus Ex 2 (link), though, has one awesome opening. Pity the rest of the game doesn't match up to its predecessor
Also, Suikoden 3 (link) has a beautiful intro. I really wish they'd go back to fully animated intros for their games instead of in-game engine shots, but I suppose hiring a studio costs quite a bit.
Motherfrickin' Soul Blade. The music is bloody awesome, and gets you pretty pumped up (even though it was a relatively slow paced battler).
Also seconding DMC3, for the opening scene where Dante kicks ass everywhere in his office. The slow mo pool ball shooting still places a massive grin on my face every time.
Holy crap, I forgot about Descent 3. I was speechless after both the finale to D2 and then seeing the resolution in that movie. Man did I feel good about beating that game (if you know what I mean).

Yeah, Im going to go with FFVIII that had the best opening I feel, also the music that goes with it "Liberati Fatali" is just to many kinds of awesome.
Any Blizzard stuff is amazing too...
In its day that was classed as cutting edge, actual recorded voice audio.. mad man.
Plus, the b-movie style of the game was pure awesome.
Ha! Another old bastard on here! I loved those Cinemaware games. It Came from the Desert, Rocket Ranger, Defender of the Crown, and the Three Stooges game. Classics.
To get back on topic, many of the good ones are already posted, including Mechwarrior 2. But what about Mech 2 Mercenaries?
It has to be Chrono Cross for me. Seriously, that opening song is so damn beautiful it almost made me cry the first time I heard it. And once I understood the context of the things that were happening it made it so much better.
Suikoden 3 is pretty damn close though. Geddoe = badass.

I was always partial to the intro to Wing Commander III. I can't count how many times I showed that to people.
I was gonna post that. Fun fact, the guy who does the voiceover for the Emperor there also did the voices for Dr Fred (Day of the Tentacle) and Dr Loboto (Psychonauts), and also played the Russian president on season 5 of "24". Also played that psychic on Lost.

I frag, therefore I am.
Just once, I'd like to be able to go on XBL, and NOT be called a mother-fucker.

Oh man, I remember the first time I saw/heard that. Lucasarts could do no wrong for me back then.

Both intros are made of win, purely for showing how you don't need rampaging polygons and crazy technology to make a really superlative intro.
Oh, and one for nostalgia:

Seriously amazing music.
That's pretty much it. Both amazing, masterpiece titles, with great openings.

Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga 2, and Persona 2 being my favorites.
But especially Nocturne's. Though I've watched DDS2's a ridiculous number of times.
yeah.
thats pretty damn amazing for its time
Full Throttle pulls a close second, man I love that game. Riiipburger, you're dumber than dirt!

Speaking of Day of the Tentacle, that one has a great intro too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HaYZsc66Bk
