Transparent Background for signature.

I am not sure if this topic will be immediately frowned upon or not.

But I was wondering if there was anyway someone could make the background of my signature transparent, I currently have it as the dark purple. I would do it myself but I am without photoshop or any photo editting software above MS paint at the moment.

Thanks!

Just so you know, that PNG transparency may not show up in IE the same as it does in Firefox. In the IE 6 I'm using here at work it's black.

How would one go about doing this in Adobe Photoshop?

Is there another format I can use to make it work in other browsers? I really don't know much about these formats, I just kept it in the original PNG. I'm happy to convert it if something else will work better.

GIF is really your only other option for transparency that'll work on all browsers.

I think it was an academic question for those of us with photoshop. I'd like the answer, too.

Make a new image, make sure you select "transparent" as the background instead of white or black or something. Write your text or whatever and save it as a PNG. Done.
