Really dig the new Fusion, but in general I'm always in favor of "just make it look as much like an Aston Martin as you can."

On the other hand, I'm not really a fan of the ATS, but I've never much liked the CTS either, so I think that was a given:

I was once the embarrassed owner of a lemony (and recently sideswiped in the middle of the night) ford escort. This sad aspect of my life is coming to an end. Today I'm buying a used Tacoma 4x4 from a nice man in Long Beach. I'm very excited.

It really reminds me of the Jaguar XJ as well as the Aston Martin. Now if only it has the same level of performance as either of those with the current price tag of today's Fusion. ;)

On a somewhat related note, I just moved from working as a sales person on a Nisson lot to becoming a sales person at a Ford lot on the opposite side of town and have already seen a HUGE improvement in my paycheck. This isn't so much a testament to Ford vs Nissan as it is to the dealership I used to be at versus the new one I am at.

I am pretty sure that if things go as well as they have been I will be the proud new owner of a Raptor by this time next year. :D

I just moved to Arizona and am looking for a new ride, but the Phoenix area isn't offering me shit. I might have to drive over to San Diego.

    If I can't find a decent Mazdaspeed3 or Infiniti G35, then I'll just buy a Suzuki GSXR.

Update: the Cruz has really good feel and handling and the best safety, but hilaribad city mileage, the Focus has a weird transmission that kicks at certain speeds, and the Kia feels like an econobox (my dad's words on the Kia). I tried to drive a civic, but the dealer tried to push a several years old model that felt like a used car much younger than a honda should.

For what its worth, I really like my 2011 Civic. Its not the type of car that I wanted to buy, but it was the best option I could afford (well, arguably the Civic is no longer the class leader but I still really like mine) and its turned out to be great. Originally I was looking at the 2011 Ford Focus, which I hated and the 2011 Mazda 3 which, despite basically being the Ford, I really liked. But theres just something about the Civic. Maybe its because it doesnt have a stupid smile on its face.

Do you know how to drive a manual? It's not hard to learn, and much more fun.

So my girlfriend saw a Juke for the first time the other day. Since this is the first time she has ever shown interest in a car that I actually like too, I have kind of a strange question.

Were planning on taking a road trip in probably April or May, and since my DD is a truck that gets 14 on the freeway going downhill(woo-hoo 5.9 magnum!), I was thinking about renting a Juke to take instead.

Are there any rental agencies in central or lower Michigan that have the juke yet? And since I'm 22 would they even let me take one for a week for that kind of distance?

It would be very expensive to rent anything until you're 25. Most places are pretty much going to fine you an extra $25 or so, per day, for having the nerve to be under 25. If you put your girlfriend on as a driver and she's also under 25, they will double that charge too.

Also, I doubt there's very many places that are going to be renting Jukes. Typically you're only going to see rental vehicles by car makers that offer fleet discounts. Lots of Ford and Chevy.

  • matt has a problemmatt has a problem Points to 'off' Points to 'on'Registered User regular
Most places won't even rent to someone under 25 as a primary driver, you can only be put on as a secondary. I think National will, but they require a pretty hefty deposit and like mushroom said, there's an extra charge per day.

I used to work at a Nissan dealership. While the Juke is stupid fun to drive it is not for road trips. You will be cramped and have little room for any luggage you take unless you don't need to use the back seats. The Nissan Rogue, while not as peppy or aggressive at handling, would be more ideal.

So I ended up with a Honda Fit. Base model, with the 5-speed.

    hondafit.jpg

I didn't think I'd be able to handle going with something with so little power but the combination of resale value, price and standard equipment won it for me. Plus, to be honest, coming from my '97 Outback with an automatic this thing actually feels pretty quick.

My plan is to drive it for 1.5-2yrs and then depending on my financial situation I'll either sell it or give it to my GF and then buy the new WRX when it comes out. I'm also growing more fond of the current Outback the more I see it, too bad there's no manual transmission option with the 3.6L engine.

Looks like we'll be getting a Nissan Murano in the next week or two. It didn't top our list in any category, and when looking at the MSRP was laughable (more than a Q5)... If you knock almost 6 grand off that price, however, it becomes more compelling.

I test drove some cars last night. The new 2012 subaru impreza was a very nice car. Great winter driving car if you have a commute with the AWD and high end gas milage. Also looked at a Ford Focus SEL hatchback and a kia soul. I came away impressed with all of them but the kia soul seems to be the best of the bunch. It is 3 grand cheaper and has a better stereo and storage capacity. Going to do another test drive on each tonight and probably make my decision.

Whoa, interesting - was the Kia Soul also a better driving experience verses the Ford hatch?

And yeah, love that new Impreza. Impressive stuff by Subaru.

The kia soul and the focus were pretty close the focus was probably a bit better for pure drive quality but for like 3k more for less fun stuff than the soul has.

If you have longer commutes than I do or have a lot of winter driving the impreza was setup amazingly well for winter driving. It has front window defroster/wiper deicers as well as rear ones heated seats and AWD. I know I heard some complaints about the noise of the CVT transmission but I have to say after driving it it may make a bit more noise than the focus but is still a really quiet car. Also even though it does not have a lot of horse power on paper you hit the gas and it responds really well pretty damn peppy.

Honestly I would be happy with any of the three cars I test drove all are excellent value for the money. The kia soul for the price just has a bit more of the fun stuff like a really sweet sound system in it which is tipping me that way. But going to give them all another test drive tonight and then make my final choice.

It's actually pretty easy. All it comes down to is driving and shifting/turning at sensible speeds (i/e less than or equal to the current speed limit), and watching out for areas with lots of ice, or lots of snow packed up (from crappy plowing jobs), where your traction will go to shit if you're not doing the former. The only times you would ever really need AWD in this area are going off-roading, or driving through small/rural backroads that receive little to zero plowing service.

Getting an AWD when all you ever do is commute on the freeway is overkill, unless you have to satiate an impulse to drive like a jackass in inclement weather.

I have a big, front-heavy RWD car (Lincoln Town Car) in Ithaca NY. Admittedly, I don't drive a whole lot in the winter (housemates have more appropriate vehicles), but when I do the only time I have trouble is getting the car out of the parking lot. Once I'm on the roads it's not problem, you just have to be careful and aware of what you're doing.

That said, when you've been digging for two hours and the car looks like it should move no problem, but every time you try one of the back tires just spins uselessly, it can be very frustrating. My housemate's AWD 5.0 Ford Explorer will just power out of the lot with no digging most days. That thing is a beast.

There are quite a few people who get away with FWD cars here in Colorado. Even then if you are that worried you just buy an extra set of rims off craigslist and mount some snow tires on them. Even the stud-less snow tires make a HUGE difference.

AWD is not really overkill IMO, but isn't exactly necessary. It helps a lot in some situations. Instead of having to ever dig out my car I can just slowly drive it out large amounts of snow or on patches of ice. About three or four years ago I was driving my Subaru 2.5rs and came up to a clover leaf on ramp and saw a jack knifed semi. A few cars in front of me were trying to slowly get up the slippery incline and get past the semi. Two of the cars with FWD couldn't get up the ramp and one car with RWD was acting like a jackass trying to take speeding starts up the hill. After those cars were unsuccessful and stopped their attempts, I just casually drove up the hill doing 3-5mph with no slippage problems on my all season tires.

AWD just makes winter driving fun, especially if you have a good AWD system like Subaru/Mitsubishi/Suzuki. I mean I was able to get around with my Alero and good all seasons (Michelin Harmony), but my Impreza with winter rubbers (Semperit Speed Grip) is so much more confidence inspiring. I can do terrible things in my Subie.

My boss went from a Mustang GT he ran all year round, to a Mitsubishi Evo X MR model. Now there's a night and day change.
I just casually drove up the hill doing 3-5mph with no slippage problems on my all season tires.

Yeah I've done that. There's one hill in town that's always terrible. The first snowfall and people somehow can't climb it, or they get stuck on it. I remember coming up to that the winter after buying my Impreza, watching the gong show unfold as FWD guys just spun their tires and RWD guys (usually pickups with no weight added in the back) kicking out their backend trying to get traction. Moved over to the furthest straight though lane, and just breezed by everyone. I may have waved at a couple of them.

Hubris is going to get me killed some day I'm sure :P

Hello Car thread! Guess I'll just launch into it.

I'm currently driving a 2000 RAV4 which I really love many aspects of, but the so-so mileage and utter dearth of power (0-60 in about half past forever, onramps up hills are my greatest nemesis) have me thinking I might be in the market for something a bit newer. With the car show winding it's way into my town next week, I was thinking of mayhaps going to investigate. Currently on my radar are cars like the Fit and the Golf, because I really prefer a hatch to a trunk. Also limiting my selection is my desire to get a manual, which is just not offered in many cars or at reasonable trim levels. If anyone could think of anything else I should look at this weekend, I'd be very appreciative.

Also, not really sure what sort of price I'm talking as of yet, since it's all a bit hazy. Nothing crazy expensive, but I do have some money to spend.

VWs aren't as bad as they used to be, but I'm not too concerned about absolute reliability as long as it's fun to drive and doesn't break down every 2 seconds.

Ford website says end of 2012 and 27,000 MSRP base. Course, they said that at the 2010 Detroit auto show too, so take it with a grain of salt.

I really like the Mazda 3, but I just don't fit in it at all. My head becomes one with the roof.

Maybe the Focus is out too then. They're based on the same platform.

Nope, fit in the Focus. Dunno what Mazda has done with the roofline/seats, but it just doesn't work.

I'm going to the Philly auto show on Saturday, and I'll definitely be looking at the ST, C30, Impreza/WRX, and the Veloster Turbo if it's there.
