    yeah
also that won't count people with adblockers
which are quite a lot nowadays. Especially with the kind of ads you get on mspa.

well yes, but i suspect that spending time doing that is basically the last thing he wants to do.

    Advantages to Project Wonderful:
    - you can completely forget about the process once you've set it in place
    - you don't have to spend a lot of time vetting ads or negotiating rates with advertisers in person, or even answering their email
    - it's run by a personal friend of Andrew's

    Disadvantages to Project Wonderful:
    - porn (although you can set internal settings to automatically reject that kind of advertiser)

but andrew doesn't give a shit about who advertises on MSPA so from his point of view, going off PW would just be a tremendous unnecessary hassle.

a lot of people will say "read up till the start of act 2" before you decide if you want to keep reading or not.
I dunno, I guess the thing is that the beginning isn't ... there's kind of a niche audience for that kind of humour. I remember when it started I was like "Oh, data structure jokes and computer game-based gags. Probably not really my kind of thing (but I'll keep reading cause andrew's a friend)." And then the scope exploded and now there's something for everybody. So while with most stuff andrew does I'd say if you don't like it at the start, don't bother - with Homestuck, things change so much that it's probably worth persevering for at least a while.

I was unaware that Hussie knew the dude behind Project Wonderful, but my point still stands. I would love to see Hussie hire someone to handle advertising, because the more money Hussie makes off of MSPA the longer he can continue making it.

Not that the dude is strapped for cash or anything, I'd just like to see him profit off his work. Penny-Arcade has a bit over 2 million unique page views a day, if I remember correctly, and I think it's a great example of a webcomic monetized right.

However, because this is Hussie, he probably either doesn't care or doesn't want to bother about changing advertisers.

Yeah, but the book is really more for people who've already read it.

Unless you really like animated GIFs and flashes being broken into a series of panels.

Meanwhile, I saw data structure jokes and was like "aw hell yeah, this is for me".

I realize I am almost certainly not a representative sample of Homestuck's audience though.

Let's just say you're not the first person to think of it, and you wouldn't be the first person to directly talk to andrew about it either. The thing is, he's not at all blinkered about this kind of thing and is very well aware of the possibilities out there in terms of revenue. But there's a few factors at play, including how much time he wants to spend organising this stuff, how much control he wants to relinquish, and whether it's worth hiring someone for what will be a finite endeavour. PA is an ongoing business which has no intention of ever shutting down as long as its creators can type/hold a stylus. I don't want to speculate about what andrew will do after Homestuck but I suspect it will surprise people.

ryan "ryanquest" north, project wonderful captain

penny arcade also has 2 million page views of people who fall under the demographic "like to play videogames and read joke about that" whereas homestuck fans are more into giant muscle beasts which is more of a cottage industry than videogames

I remember once that Hussie wrote about homestuck as one MSPA story, so while we don't know what his next project will be I get the feeling it will still stay within this general scope of the other works under the name.

So long as he doesn't pull some Dark Tower shit with it accumulating to the main MSPA narrative.

I seem to also recall that he's not sure what he'll do next but it may not continue to be MSPA. Based on that I think tynic's got the right of it.
