*My past, it can never be erased*
*Shots in the dark, muzzle flashes leaping like the fires of hell, more holes than a Stephen King TV miniseries in the walls, all over the apartment complex. Every fired round was a different message, of regret, anger, or desperation. A Chinese new year of death. I had to wait it out, or find something to better turn back the tide*
(translation: reserving this page until I can get to a decent PC to actually make an OP. You ever try to type a paper or do something complex with an iPad? It's more annoying than bees in your root beer) I'd like to reserve two or three more posts.

Until then, if you want, you can PM me info or post it. I want to give this thread it's own style, sort of like what that other guy did for the L.A. noire thread. I am familiar with Max Payne 1 and 2, so I'll be writing the summaries, stories, and perhaps mods.

Got a computer.

Welcome to the Max Payne 1/2/3 thread.

Here we will discuss the past games of Max Payne, Max Payne 2: Fall of Max Payne, and the new upcoming Max Payne 3.

Summaries:

Max Payne 1
256px-Maxpaynebox.jpg

Max Payne 1 was a third person action game made by Remedy. It was released in 2001. What set it apart from games like Quake and Doom was it' Noir aesthetic design, it's Graphic Novel cut scenes (Later to be copied by Red Steel 1, horribly), and the best part, its bullet time acrobatics. Basically it was like the slow down sections in The Matrix, also named bullet time, to let you dodge bullets and slow down time to let you aim up your shots better. It's style of bullet time, acrobatics, and style of the levels also has a distinct John Woo style. It has you fighting in offices, subways, alleyways, apartment buildings, corporate headquarters with lasers, and underground science bases. It also has a big repertoire of mods, the most popular being the Kung Fu mod.

Max in the first game becomes a DEA agent hunting down suppliers of Valkyr. He is blamed for his partners death and becomes a vigilante, with the law pursuing him. He has only himself and the few friends he can scrounge up to help him, such as Vladimir Lem, Mona Sax, and Alfred Woden. Him and his never explained time slowing skills, acrobatics, and instincts are the only tools he has to fight. Also ambidexterity as he wields two pistols and smgs with great accuracy.

Characters:
Max Payne: The main protagonist and the character the player controls. Max was once a happy family man, with a nice family, a happy outlook, and a relatively nice house for a cop's salary. Then one day, his family was brutally murdered by drug addicts under the influence of a drug named Valkyr. They even kill his baby. His wife is shot and lies in a bloody puddle on their bed. Max kills his family's killers, but from that day, he became a depressed, introverted and broken man. His only goal in life is to hunt down his family's killers, and find some semblance of peace in his life. Max is suicidal at times, wanting to rejoin with his family. However, he also has a strong will to live. He's a little like Mel Gibson's character and the Punisher put in a blender. He lives only for the job, but is forever affected by his family's death, taking responsibility in laying out justice for those who destroyed his family.
(I'll add more later, or you guys could help.)

(This would go faster if I just copied and pasted everything from wikipedia, but I want to do this by hand, not just copy and paste like my AC: Brotherhood thread. As such, no bitching about this section please.)

Reserved- Max Payne 3 news (I'll try to update as much as possible)

*We stared each other down, then came the gunshots. I shot into his head, a visceral sound of agony, a soft sound of hot metal into flesh. When I remember that time, I hear utterances of a squelching sound. I looked at the hot corpse's dead eyes, and saw the hole through his brain. He was dead, but his eyes were blaming, hating, they were very much alive. The hole was a broken memory, a piece of history that would never be undone. I walked off, I had a job to do.* (translation: the ability to see bullets go completely through people is awesome)

In the last month, I've gone from not caring about MP3 to day one purchase. Kinda like LA Noire last year now that I think about it...

I'll buy MP3 on steam sale or in the clearance bin, but at no time will I be under the illusion I am playing a real Max Payne sequel.

Yeah, I felt the same way when I first saw the promo stuff for MP3 that made the game look like The Adventures of Fat Payne in HUEHUEHUE Land. The recent news and information about MP3 though has really changed my mind. I'm fairly hype for it now.

I don't doubt the game will be badass, but unless the recent news is that they had Sam Lake write it in secret, it's still just glorified fanfic.

Thank you DeMoN for the video.

I really liked the dark rainy noir streets of New York, but after they reused locations from 1 for 2 (They Vodka twice, with updated textures from the first game, they reused the mansion twice for both games) I think South America is a nice change. Also, trust me, I hated fat John McClane Payne at first, but after I found out he'll look like himself in earlier levels, I'm cool with it.

I love the way they using bullet time in multiplayer. By the way, I'll be updating that once I get my computer fixed, which should, tops, only take Friday. Think I have a faulty new video card.

I watched that tech video and...um, didn't the first two already do most of that stuff? Each round was individually tracked and rendered and Max's animation let him spin all the way around 360 degrees, even when jumping. The only new thing I saw was mention of Euphoria...

I'm hopeful, but seriously, wasn't most of that stuff already in MP1 and MP2?

Starting to play through the first two again in preparation after I got em as a Steam gift.

Gotta say I must have been blunted by modern games, don't remember dying this much. If it wasn't for Dark Souls giving me some determination they would probably take me much longer.

i played through them both on thanksgiving last year and while it was awesome i definitely look forward to that style of gameplay but in a nicer looking engine. time has not been good to these games.

It looks pretty, but it will end up being Gears of War with a fat unarmored dude and no Bender.

The facial animations on Max Payne 1 are.... Well shit. Max looks like he's taking a dump. The bodies, terrain, and buildings look nice though. Max Payne 2 has some great graphics for that time.

Anyone else think Dead on Impact ending would be great if it was canon?

I don't see where the Gears of War thing comes from. I think a situation where your behind a desk or pillar or something, you regain your health, reload, then bullet jump by jumping over the desk and slowmo shooting the shit out of everyone would be awesome. There still are acrobatics in this people.

People comparing to Gears have never played Gears. Honestly, without noir or Lake I don't think I can call this a Max Payne game. It looks fantastic, but that's not Payne. But I've been suprised before.

Eat those pain pills like they're smarties.

The first time I played through Max Payne was a couple years ago when my current PC had Vista. I thought the sound was a little...off, but I didn't realize I was missing a ton of in-game voice acting stuff. Still loved it. I replayed it again about a year ago under W7, had no issues with it, and loved it even more after hearing all of the crazy voice stuff I missed the first time. I ran through MP2 a little bit after that. I liked it; the gameplay felt tighter and the graphics were prettier. But I'm not sure I enjoyed the plot as much. I understand what the plot's trying to do, but overall I think MP1's comes out ahead by just a bit. Both are still fantastic games that deserve to be played. I really can't think of anything else quite like them.

As for MP3, I haven't paid any attention to it. I'm curious to see how it turns out, but I won't have the time or money for it at release unfortunately. I'm rooting for it being a great game and a solid new entry in a franchise thought long dead.

And I'd be remiss if I didn't post this while discussing classic Max Payne. Will definitely be doing my next run of MP with this mod.

    Looks so fucking great.

Doesn't matter what game, Rockstar's brand of informative, behind-the-scenes-esque videos is perfect. Nobody else does it like this.

I really want to know how holding one long weapon and one sidearm affects gameplay. Certainly looks cool.

Yeah, there's no doubt that this is a Max Payne game. So awesome looking.

The Gears of War comparison is a little baffling...

Edit: For real, any more than a few seconds taking cover, then you're doin' it wrong. Also, Max looks way more awesome than he ever has. Glad to see they moved the release to May. Going up against ME3 would be dumb.

Oh my God mixed dual wielding and that animation system and the voice.

All of my reservations are slowing disappearing.

Looks like the invisible golf bag full of weapons is gone for a more "you see him carrying all his guns" mechanic.

Yeah, I like how he throws the assault rifle on the ground when he switches to dual pistols. As if to say, "This thing's out of ammo, fuck it."

People terrible at games (game "journalists") were complaining about difficulty back when MP 2 first came out. So if its a shock compared to current gen games, that's no surprise. Just remember that there's no health regen (well, there is, but only to get you to 10% or so if you drop below) so you can't bullet sponge, and you'll do fine. The only genuinely hard part is the sniper escort, because fuck that.

Otherwise, I had to handicap myself by doing pistols only or no bullet time to get a decent challenge. I played through MP 2 so many times. Easily the best shooter of the 2000s. My only complaint is that there weren't enough big gunfights.

edit: MP 1 is actually a fairly hard game, so my comment is only about 2. Bullet time gives the player a significant advantage in 2, in 1, it only helps you aim better and whatnot.

Kung fu Max Payne's drunken lean + Desert Eagle = ultimate badass headshot generator.

MP2 bullet time is my favorite slow motion mechanic ever, though. It even beats FEAR 1's slomo shotgunning.
