honestly, the time thing will be totally useless. post number is the way to go.
As long as we don't have idiots posting like mad to reach the designated post count in order to be able to make their own topics. It should be a number of GOOD posts.
The problem is that words like "good" are subjective.
Make it a high enough number that Mods would notice anyone spaming their way up to it, and anyone who does so will recieve a name ban and have to start over.
how about not telling them about the post number and letting them figgure it out
They'll spam until the button works anyway.
Also, it feels a bit elitist and secretive.
nobody has to TELL them that the new topic button will work after they have posted X number of times.
it can be a beautiful epiphany. and if they ask why it doesn't, we can say that it is a bug and Ramius is working on it.

That's the reason TTB has basically stagnated itself, long periods of trying to keep out new people (even though it was created out of fear that the community would die off.)

Now now. We aren't trying to exclude new comers to the community or anything like that. Just more or less show them the ropes, be it a tad forcefully. I believe a good system of restricting priviledges until it is clear to them what kind of community this is, as well as what will fly around here and what will not, is what we need.
Theres been some good ideas in this thread that I feel really should be taken into consideration by King Ramius.
I said it before, all these ideas are overly contrived and hard to put into effect. As PA increases in popularity theres going to be an increase of new people to the forums. I think that most people either pick up on the rules or get jailed/banned. It works, the only reason that you're seeing more instances of stupid shit is because there's an increase of people. There's a correlation betweent he two factors.

just so you know, i don't AGREE with putting restrictions down (i think i already said that) but if there ever WERE to be restrictions, i would want them done in the manner i said.
please mr. Ramius, tell us that you won't really do this to the poor noobs

ok, this is pointless to continue this discussion.
I have fairly defined views on newbies, and they definitely do not include quarantining them away, or taking away ANY of their posting powers for that matter.
I had an idea for the points system a while back, discussed it at length, did a bunch of coding for it, and then realized that it would never work. So I basically scrapped it.
I have an idea for a "compromise solution" to the rules issue, but it is really low down on my priority list, so I'm not even going to discuss it at this time. Suffice to say that for now, it will be business as usual. Newbies will show up, and the community will either embrace them, punish them, or ignore them. It's been this way for a long time, and I don't see a pressing need to change it.
Sorry, but we are not trying to turn ourselves into fucking Elitists.

we don't really get all that many stupid noobs. and the ones we do just keep things interesting.
Thank you for making a sensible point.
It really doesn't happen all that often. It's not like we're getting ten "Hi I'm New" threads a day. If we were then we'd need to do something. But that's just not the case.
Besides, sometimes it can be kind of fun to lay the smackdown and jail or ban an idiot noob.
While I am not an Elitists I will say that if a Noob comes in and acts like a stupid Noob and they get flamed for it then that is fine by me. Trial by fire I say if they survive they are worth having around. If they they bail then so be it. It is the way of the forum
I never understood the concept of some people being aggressive towards newbs. For example if most people on the message boards are against those who flame newbs for sucking at a game why flame them on the boards ? Just because you aren't playing anything with them doesn't mean it makes you better than the "chattybitches" that go on saying " You n00b you suck!!11!1 . " Just because you post on message boards. Now I have the feeling that what I said makes no sense, but I decide to post anyway :P .
Another thing, what in the name of Ghandi's Goat, is goatse ? I have heard about it a numerous amount of time but never figured out what it was. Explain ? Please ?
anyway it's not about being mean to noobs because they're new. this isn't a cs server. the problem is when they come here and just start breakign the rules and acting like a complete ass.
think of this place as a house party. noobs are the guys who come in off the street, not knowing anyone, and then drink all the beer, shout at strangers and acost them, piss in the middle of the room, and then pass out on your bed in a puddle of their own vomit.
How about instead of Jail or whatever there could be a Pinned thread for "the new guys"
Where any 1 month plus members caught flaming or making obvious statements about how a newbie was being stupid (Duh. Eveyone, okay most were. everyone would agree with me on this) would be jailed for a day or 2. The new people around here tend to really arc up when baited by an old timer.
Just a thought, it may make the stoopid a little more concentrated and thus easier to clean up.
Perhaps this would give new persons time to adjust and learn to deal with the knowledge and Flow of the place.
Look , I've got it all figured out. No need for posting restrictions, jailings, stickied n00b threads or the like. Just supply them with this image anytime a newbie makes a shit thread.
So far the best idea I've seen yet is the 1 week without having a "new topic" button. This gives them time to post in threads like normal, but they can't create new threads to site whore, say "hi I'm new" or what have you.
Well, what is goatse ? I have heard about it many, many times. But I have not figured out what it is. Might someone please explain ?
search for it on urban dictionary.

I cannot believe this thread continues. Of course noobs are a problem and they always will be unless you perma lock registration. This is something that is hardly avoidable. Making a period of non-posting after registration would just cause much more irritation and discouragement to new members. Just think about people trying to use Help / Advice?
Carding people would mean to check their Identification at the entrance, much like a movie theatre to see if you are old enough to see watch an R rated film.
Please, stop this thread. Don't reply unless you have something meaningful and ontopic to talk about like how we need to buy more RAM. I'd kill for a RAM joke right about now.

Speaking of Newbies, it seems really, really obvious that they like to go to Linksville and post something of theirs. I mean, it's happening a lot more often.
