logically speaking shouldn't you be more wary of non-f2p games, since you have to give them your money BEFORE you get to actually play the game and see how you like it?

what's essentially important to me is that you can't buy with money dollars an advantage over other players
in SMNC, the only thing that is not completely cosmetic that you can buy with actual money is unlocking new pros, of which there are not that many. All the stuff that gives you an actual in-game advantage can only be acquired by playing the game and earning the in-game currency, and that's just the way I likes it.
I am ok with F2P if you can get the content in some way anyway. In particular if the stuff that is only pay doesn't really affect gameplay. Like TF2. Granted, TF2 wasn't originally designed for that.

No it's fine. I really dislike Super Monday Night Combat and Tribes Ascend because of the pay stuff that makes me feel like a dead weight for my team.

again, you can't outright buy, with actual money, any powerups that actually enhance your performance in SMNC
the only thing that can be paid for with actual money that affects gameplay, at all, is which pros you have access to, and they can also be unlocked by spending your in game fun-bucks
the game does have a stupidly steep learning curve, though

Re: Tribes: right now you can pre-order the game for $30 and get a bunch of gold and a lifetime VIP boost and a free 30-day boost. So it's practically buying the game.
Also you are totally not "dead weight" if you never spend a dollar on the game.

There is a ton of f2p stuff out there right now and most of it is crap.
TF2 seems to be the exception on account of it already sold a ton of copies and also they have a big in-game store now.
