So with that out of the way, TotalBiscuit and Yogscast - why are these guys blessed enough to be the MMO guys to watch streams and videos from? Are there no good North American videocasts to watch? Why don't we have the equivalent of a North American Paul Barnett (whose accent is tolerable, by the way) doing reviews and videos of the new MMOs and instead get saddled with the mind-numbing Yogscast and so-British-it-hurts TotalBiscuit?

TB released some videos during the Wrath beta. That was his rise if I remember correctly. New zone info + British voice = novelty.

He's been doing gaming commentary/podcasting for well over a decade, so while the CATACLYSM beta may have gave his youtube channel major exposure, he'd already been fairly well known to those who cared about that kind of stuff.

I don't mind Lewis and Simon by the way, anyone with a lick of sense will see what seems like "Stupid Shit" is them horsing around... y'know, stupid shit, or playing the sort of character they've built up with their fan base.

Yeah, he'd been doing WoW Radio before that, but the Cata stuff was when he became a "thing".

Ok, I am a bit pissed about this. I work 13-16 hour days and the only two days I work this week, is both days for the signup. Crap, why can't a brother get a break. I have been dieing to play this game for a couple of years now. Hopefully, they activate a "invite a friend" or something to the Beta and someone in here has a kind enough heart to pick me. Or better yet, they release this in May.

Why can't you sign up the during the 8-11 hours that you don't work these two days? You do three things. One, download the diagnostic tool that sends your computer specs. Two, enter your email. Three, wait for your confirmation email. I don't see the issue.

Because I have to get my laptop out of my bag, set up the table I sit at. Unfold my chair, plug in the laptop, turn it on, sign in, wait for all of the garbage to load up and then go to teh website and download the tools, which is going to take some time. Unfortunately, I am on a wireless network and my router is one floor up. It would take at least 30 minutes for all of this and tear down. Plus I have to drive 45 minutes to work and then home. Really I get about 5 hours of sleep on teh days I work. Really, it wouldn't bother me if sleep wasn't such a precious commodity on my work days. Well, I guess I will just have to forget playing it until later this year.

    Uhhhhhh....

The diagnostic tool is 384K. I mean, you can complain if you want, but it really will take roughly two minutes to fill out. That isn't an exaggeration.

I guess, you can complain about how you can't get in and stuff, but when someone is being helpful, it's kind of ridiculous to ignore them. I know that some people would rather do that than actually fix the issue, but... come on, don't be that guy. =/

Did you even read what I wrote? I am not ignoring anyone. It isn't so much the download, it's the pre and pro setup I have to do. This in tandum with my long drive, long work hours and lack of sleep. My point was, if they did this for 3 days, I could have done it tomorrow, no problem. Having the signup for only 48 hours removed someone who was really looking forward to getting into the Beta.

...set up the table I sit at. Unfold my chair, plug in the laptop...

If you're strapped for time, don't do those things. Your laptop has a battery, it'll live without being plugged in for the few minutes you need. Sit on the ground or your bed and put the laptop on your lap. Problem solved. If your laptop somehow takes 25 minutes to boot into Windows, then I'm not sure your machine is really fit for a beta test. Maybe do a fresh install of Windows one day?

Yes, I read what you wrote. You'd rather complain than do something about it, I understand.

Dude, you're not the only person here who has long work hours and little sleep. The question you have to ask yourself is, "How badly do I want to get in this?"

For the record, I work the same sort of shifts, and I about shat a brick when I found out that the signup was while I was at work. I am lucky if I get five hours of sleep. You know what I did?

I fucking left work early, like a BAWS and signed up for that shit so hard that my monitor spun. And I have to walk 30+ minutes (each way) to and from work. It was absolutely worth it.

And I'm sure many people can't play the Beta on weekends due to work. What's the problem? You can't sacrifice a few minutes to download a small file? Since you have a laptop, why didn't you just take your lunch break to download it at work? I mean, there are so many options you have to do this even with your long work day, but you rather complain than do anything about it.

God I hope that I regain the ability to remake the thread before the betas crush this thread under the weight of HOLY SHIT BETA TIME. I just realized how much faster this thing is going now; we've gone through 20+ pages in a week or so when before that lasted, like, 5 months.

It's gonna start slowing again, and won't pick up too much when us normies get a shot at the beta. After all, it'll be tightly NDA, and the mods try to respect NDA's here (as do many users). Relations with companies is important to us.

edit: actually I take that back. Screenshots aren't usually taken out, and I seemed to forget how ravenous these people are about GW2. A single "leaked" screenshot could spawn a page of discussion.

It was justified so I'm not going to go to a mod and say "Lemme make this thing up real quick then throw me back in". But I don't know who I trust to do a new thread when we hit 101 if it's an issue. Hmm..

I'm going to sleep on it for now. Whatever happens, I got the template saved and I'm sure we can keep the thread moving somehow without interruption.

I work in the Public Service Field. Normal day: Clock in, run, run, run, paperwork, run, run, run, papaerwork, clock out. The only time I get to do this is when I am doing paperwork and that is only for a few minutes. I am not whining about this ladies and gentlemen. I am just saying they could have added a day or two to the signup. Maybe I am misunderstanding...when is the last day you can sign up? I thought it was Wednesday and Thursday? If it is Friday, then I am golden. Oh, and my laptop will run this. It runs The Old Republic just fine. It is pretty top notch. My need to sit and do things is another obstacle but I can sacrifice if I am not too late.

It takes almost no time at all. A few minutes. If you have enough time to discus this you have enough time to do the signup. Hell, when you have lunch, or a break, you have time to do it. Do you really have no time at work to even eat?

I pulled my laptop out, turned it on, ran the tool, and turned it off and threw it back in the case in literally under four minutes while I was at work during a "bathroom break" when I saw the beta was up. You don't need to get any peripherals or power cords out, the tool will work just fine on battery power and it downloads instantly.

It takes more time to explain why you can't do it than it takes to do it, 30 minutes? what kind of laptop do you have, something from the 1980s? It's a 400 kilobyte tool and you're not required to register or anything

That skilled warrior video has opened my eyes, this plays more like amalur or fable than wow

Could GW2 be the first post world of warcraft generation MMO?

I mean not to imply wow is going anywhere, after all neither did the playstation 2 when the xbox 360 showed up, but GW2 seems to finally be a cut above the old guard of MMO design

Ok, I guess people didn't understand. I am a cop (don't hate) and I can use my work computers when I am done doing paperwork to post here quickly. However, I cannot connect my personal laptop to the network. Is that a clearer picture to why I have a small window to do this? I will try tomorrow if I can still try to sign up.

Why the hell would we hate on a cop? I have tons of respect for LEOs of all stripes... however, that still doesn't mean that you can't sign up for the beta. :P You'll be home at some point, use your laptop at that time.

For the record, I work in long stints doing Customer Loyalty/Retention for a major cell phone company, so I totally sympathize with your job. My day consists of lots of paperwork, getting yelled at by random members of the public who blame me personally for whatever shit they screwed up, and people who expect me to give them everything for free.

It's like what you do, except I get shot at less. Sometimes. :P

If there is, I haven't come across it. Besides, I don't bring my laptop to work because the only time I get to sit and play games or anything of the sort, is when I get to rock a desk for the night. Happens sometimes and I am usually warned about it before hand. Why my coworkers seem to think that sitting at a desk is bad, baffles me. I perfer to have an easier evening once in a while. It sure beats dealing with everyones problems (most of which they created or failed to flee from...or chose to flee when we arrive) all of the time. Anyway, hopefully the chance to sign up is still there this morning because that is the first thing I am doing when I get home. Thanks for the responses and help guys. Can't wait to jump into the game and hang with you guys.

You'll take a break from that to play a game where you do the exact same thing. Hey, at least this way you can shoot them several times and you won't have to get your ass busted afterwards.

Could GW2 be the first post world of warcraft generation MMO?
I mean not to imply wow is going anywhere, after all neither did the playstation 2 when the xbox 360 showed up, but GW2 seems to finally be a cut above the old guard of MMO design

Warcraft has already been surpassed by League of Legends. (15 million accounts). I would say now is the right time for anyone to surpass Warcraft in terms of a next gen MMO.

Arena.Net seems to be making some really smart choices for resolving the issues commonly seen in MMO's (Group size scaling and level scaling, Positive changes towards grouping reinforcement, The player/world interaction seems to be really solid as well). Arena.Net have really sold a solid foundation to this game, The art from arena.net has always been awesome. From the behaviour of games with the freemium model the Lack of subscription fees and a cosmetic e-shop is the profitable way to go in opening up accessibly to a larger player audience.

GuildWars2 has already shown to have to game design to be a next gen MMO. The foundation is set but now the focus is content, and they need to succeed here if they want to be a next gen mmo that people play.

I wonder how many sign-ups they got.

i'd say at least 1 Million

I'm going to get your optimism up. I would actually be surprised if 1 million people signed up. I don't even think TOR broke a million sign-ups and way, way, way more people knew about and were interested in TOR than GW2 (I know, I know :x) if the general reaction among my friends and family is any indication. Basically most of the interest generated amongst us is me and my best friend completely nerding out every time even the tiniest bit of news came out and it infectiously slowly creeping into their brain until they bother to look it up and then have that holy shit moment. But the point is, if they didn't have people endlessly prattling on about this game then they wouldn't even be giving it a look and these are all people who have been playing mmo's for years.

Edit: I'd love to be proven wrong though. I'd rather GW2 was massively popular and super hyped up than increase my odds at beta slots.

What I mean to say by freemium is the that any form of an e-shops can be more successful than a subscription fee. Not that Guildwars 2 will be free to play or require players to spend money in game to get ahead. I would wager though that players will spend more for a cosmetic shop than they would otherwise. I'm looking at LeagueOfLegends skins in this regard.

There's no guarantee that signing up will get you in anyway... and it's only a beta, it's not like this is your only chance to play the game ever.

Besides, you sound far too busy to be playing games!
