Wait, so one of the reasons people hate BBT is because of the humour at the expense of the nerdiness of the characters, and that it is in effect making fun of them by proxy?
Dunno about anybody else, but I ain't give two shits at a joke made at my expense. I'd probably be laughing hardest of all, to be honest. Quit takin' yo'selves so seriously, mang...
I'll laugh at jokes made at my expense if they're clever. BBT isn't clever.
There were obviously some great sitcoms in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s. Then a huge lack of interest seemed to kill off the genre in the late 90s. It finally returned with shows like Scrubs and Arrested Development to now where we have shows like How I Met Your Mother, 30 Rock, The Office, Community, and Parks and Recreation. Those are the ones I occasionally watch, anyways. It's sad that lazy shows like Big Bang Theory will probably kill the genre again sooner than later.

I guess people take offense because they're bad jokes at their expense. Like shitty, predictable, one dimensional jokes about outdated stereotypes.
Not me though. I don't hate it because it's about nerds. I hate it because it's shit. The writing is godawful, the jokes are shit and it's really weakly performed.

There's not necessarily a direct correlation, it's just an apparent trend.

Pretty much this, here's an unedited clip
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geo4Rm8VxMQ
Within the first 20 seconds the audiences laughs at
"How's your leg?"
"Very good, thanks for asking. Come on in."
And
"You're here to exchange gifts."
There are no jokes, no good delivery, just stuff people say that the audience is told to laugh at.
Fair enough, it's just a show I feel falls flat at every moment and I find everyone on it aggravating. Anyway, gifs!
She's not covering herself up. She's pulling the sheets back from the other side of the bed.
