It takes the annoying "Oh a long, close duel and... he just regenned to full health... great... fun..." out and gives purpose to chipping/sniping flag runners on the way in (make them come to a stop if they want to regen). Seems a good compromise to me between those who want it gone (I'm on that side) and those who don't.
This complaint is really starting to bother me. I'd really like somebody to post a video of them hitting a capper with a sniper rifle and having them regenerate to full before hitting the flag, while maintaining their usual route. Unless you're pegging them in their damn base, I'm just not seeing it happening.
I was under the (probably mistaken) thought that you simply didn't regen heath when you were holding the flag anyway. Or at least you don't regen nearly as fast as without it. I know when my buds are on we're always passing the flag back and forth to "heal up". But maybe we're just impatient.

Your usual route doesn't start until you're making your run at the flag. Stopping nearly out of bounds for 6 seconds isn't going to somehow invalidate the direction you normally come at the flag from. Unless you as a sniper tag the runner on their approach run (nearly impossible as these usually start behind or beside the stand way the fuck out of view) they will simply wait just behind their starting ski hill until they are full. This is especially true since many use a call in to bust deployables before they make the run, meaning at some point they will stop to paint it anyway, so they'll just wait an extra 3 seconds after calling in the strike and be on their way, comfortably in a valley nearly out of bounds moving towards the rear of your base at full hp.
I mean, I guess if you want to snipe on some hill way the fuck behind your own base and spend all of your time only shooting at the flag carrier you could harass them some, but most flag runners will destroy a sniper in close combat, and by going on to some hill behind your base you're giving up all the defense of your turrets and whatnot.
For the record, health regen starts 18 seconds after you last took damage (14 seconds if you have the faster regen upgrade).
No, you don't regen health when you are holding the flag.
The fast flag routes start at spawn. Not only is this required for the top speeds, but you need to boost yourself as early as possible so you start your regen before you take the enemy flag. It's even better if you are at full health before you get into enemy sniper range. If you are forced to stop and get health back not only will it delay your run, but it's going to lower your flag grab speed. Oh, and the sniper is probably moving to position to snipe you as soon as you get out of cover... an easy shot considering you have no speed.

Yes, but the difference between grabbing the flag once you're over a certain speed (Mach 1 vs Mach 200) is negligible to the defender's chance to stop you. As is the difference between a 2 second cap and a 5 second cap.

I get more annoyed when I'm in a firefight with a guy, I get him down to a sliver, he runs off behind a hill, and jumps back up with full health.
I guess I could avoid that situation by improving my aim and not letting people go unhit for 16 seconds.

I found a pretty useful chart that shows unlock values and how gold-effecient they are to unlock. What I found most interesting was the breakdown of boosts:
I don't think I've ever earned 3800 XP in one day, much less for 90 consecutive days.
If you're not VIP and not on a booster, I can see why. With VIP+Booster I'm getting 2000-4000 in a single match. It's insanely fast compared to vanilla.
They've done a great job of creating very tangible rewards for unlocks, which should encourage people to buy boosts more.

The moral? Don't buy short term boosts.
Actually, the moral is not to buy any boost at all below 30 days, and above that still not to bother unless you're playing at least six games a day.
Thus, the others all die before tuxkamen dies to the vote. Hence, tuxkamen survives, village victory.

I just updated my XP/gold feedback post (not sure if it's read or not). It seems like a 250XP/GP rate would strike a more reasonable balance between profits and gouging.
18K items would be 72GP (perks, non-discounted classes)
42K items would be 168GP (packs, belt items, discounted weapons)
75K items would be 300GP (ground deployables, some weapons)
100K items would be 400GP (money weapons)

Six games a day? It's rare I don't have 1500-2000XP each game. Sometimes it's far more. Very rarely, it's less.
In any event, I've gotten about half I need to break even and I've had the boost for less than 24 hours.
I bought a 30-day XP pack. My first win today earned me over 5k XP in a single match. 2-3 more matches beyond that and it's double the "break even" amount listed there.
Seems pretty good to me, though you definitely have to be active for the boost to be worth it.

Keep in mind you get a 30 day pack for free when you buy the $30 points pack (3000 points + 30 day booster). I bought through the webstore. Not sure if it also works in-game.
Also keep in mind that your 30 day booster may renew itself at random intervals, I activated mine a week ago and it seems to reset to 30 days every few days (currently at 29 days left).
Also first win of the day bonus plus booster equals some ridiculous amounts of xp.
Speaking of gold I don't think this was posted yet, just had this come up on the Tribes Twitter -
FREE Tribes Gold. For you. Just because. << Click the left-hand tab "Get 250 Free Gold!"... http://fb.me/1P6udnb8P
Was able to get a code from it.

That's only happening because booster owners were credited five days due to server issues.
Good idea: sneaking up and backstabbing Sentinels
Bad idea: sneaking up and backstabbing Sentinels on top of their ship on Crossfire, with the entire enemy team spawning around you.
Guys this game is really fun, in case you didn't know :P
I never played the originals and I just started the beta tonight, and I am loving the combat and movement already. I'm playing soldier because I'm not great at skiing for pathfinder and juggernaut seemed really dependent on being able to hit every time due to the movement and reload speed. Would you say that is a good choice for someone new to the series, and if so what role should I be playing in a team game? I have been sort of playing defense and harassing the attackers with the thumper, but that's mainly because I wanted to just get a feel for the game, I have no idea what the roles are for each class

I'm by no means a "pro" Tribes player, but I've been playing since the first.
I like to think of each map as a soccer field. Tell yourself what position you're going to play. Are you going to be a striker and try to nab the flag? Then you want to be a light class, like a pathfinder. You can go medium, but the pathfinder is the fastest by far with the thrust pack. Ever wonder how a pathfinder can just accelerate to top speed and just keep on flying? Thrust pack.
Do you want to play midfield? You can harass people coming from the enemy base, chase a flag carrier, or escort your own carrier as the need arises. I like the soldier or raider for this task.
For defense, I find you can rarely go wrong. Just find something you like to play and slowly unlock everything. Different maps call for different defensive strategies, somewhat. Sometimes you want a heavy on the flag to block people flying through and grabbing it. Or forcefields. Or mines. Other times it's enough to just be there, as the "flag runs" aren't nearly as fast.
If you stick to one of those general "roles," you'll have a hard time not helping out your team. But sometimes you wanna just fuck around and snipe, or pound a base with mortars, or take a raider and live in their generator for a while. That's what I always loved about Tribes: there is no one way to play the game. In most team shooters, you're either all the same or you've got different weapons. Maybe different abilities. In Tribes, the classes are so diverse in so many ways, it's like a whole different play style when you switch to another one.
I do miss the inventory stations of the past, where you build your loadout, but I don't miss getting sniped every time I needed to use one. I'll bet having to sit there and fuss about or wait in line for one isn't nearly as fun as I'm remembering it with my rose-colored glasses. I also miss the old vehicles. These new ones don't do anything for me at all. I want my scout back.
Sometimes you want a Doombringer on the flag to block people flying through and grabbing it. With forcefields. And mines.
They are all on the same class. A class that I can't play worth anything.
That reminds me, they need to increase that missile speed. Unless a Shrike pilot is retarded, you can`t shoot one down. They fly far faster than your missile, and it eventually just fades away. Just have it go 20% faster if it is locked onto a Shrike.

Soldier is a great starting class. For offense, you should harass the enemy base. Take out the radar and any light defenses around the flag, and generally annoy the defenders so they focus on you instead of the flag stand. Your capper will love you. For defense, watch the flag stand. Have your thumper ready and smack any flag carriers as they hit the flag stand (or just before, if possible). If there are other defenses (mines/barriers) on the flag stand, the capper might not even make it past the stand. If he does, you can help chase and try to kill him with the assault rifle. If he's already wounded as he should be, this won't be too tough unless he is moving very fast. An alternative option for defense is protecting the generator, but I would say the flag is usually higher priority for defense, unless perhaps you have a very good chaser or two. Lastly, playing defense, you should keep your base clear of enemies so that your flag capper can return safely.
So I have officially become a paying customer and spent some time with the Tech's Thumper last night. My first game I came away with 5 out of the 6 medals on the scoreboard at the end of the match  Its pretty ridiculous, but after that match I couldn't hit anything so who knows. It feels like a completely superior weapon to the SMG, but that might be personal preference.
I finally remembered what the lag at the start of each map reminds me of: Global Agenda. About 10 seconds after the beginning of the match the servers just go AWOL for about 5 seconds, and it feels like what is happening here. Its not too big of a deal, but its hard to stop the first flag pickup of the game when I'm suddenly standing nowhere near the flag.

I've been playing quite a bit this past week and I've never experienced anything like that. At all.

Good games with Sensational today. Having an escort makes all the difference in flag returning. And I can tell you, Sensational is a high priced escort. :winky:

As to whether it is working or not, I don't know.

Of course, I guess this also buffs the assault rifle/chaingun type weapons.
But if they nerf the spinfusor into the ground there will be riots.

Some things are just far too expensive to unlock with gold, like some weapons. $8 for a single weapon unlock?
