jesus fucking christ. my friend said she started signing papers and has a meeting with a recruiter tomorrow. she decided to just enlist after a failed job interview with no idea what that would entail.
like, in the military?
you should tell her about the incredibly high rates of sexual abuse against women in the military, if you want to discourage her
i don't want to discourage her but i just want her to make an informed decision and she is not.
she mentioned photography and sketches that make a difference as a reason to go.

I predict regret in her future.
Probably yes, but even with regret it could still work out alright for her.
It could, yes.
But just last week, when Santorum was ranting about women serving in the military, various persons went on cable news shows to talk about how women were being raped "too much" in the military, as opposed to receiving just the right amount of rape.
That seems like pertinent information of which a female needs to be aware prior to signing those papers.

Probably yes, but even with regret it could still work out alright for her.
I realize that it could be an a-okay thing for her to do.
but at the same time I don't think she has any idea what the realities of such a decision are. This seems to be a case of lost direction and jumping the gun.
That's a struggle I think about a lot. Would I rather be VERY good at something to the detriment of my being a well-rounded person capable of being existentially ready to deal with whatever life throws my way, or would I rather become so skilled at something that it is a unique lens for homo-sapiens to understand the universe?
Like, I could spend all my money on modular gear and read theoretical signal processing treatises and know fucking EVERYTHING about sound design. But that would be a lot of time spent not actually making music with all that "musical" knowledge. But then I can also just learn a good amount of everything in the music field and be adept at every task but what will it all mean if I don't have that singular voice that makes you actually want to listen to my music.
this kind of thinking is, and let me be blunt, almost entirely useless.
like that's a fine intellectual game to play but don't even attempt to make any decisions from the trivial to the life changing based on this kind of thinking

So I've got my asteroid generating algorithm up and working, but for some reason I can't get it to not place new cubes in an existing cube's location.
Argh. Finding these little run-time bugs is the least fun part of programming.
Is it really true that most pro gamers only get good at one game? Most FPS skills are transferable to other games... Meh.
nah, i think most pro gamers become very, very good at one or two genres of game, and specialize in a rotating series of games (usually the ones that are new and big and have tournaments for big money)
for example, any given fighting game pro will have a specialty game but will be competitive, often at the international level, in half a dozen or more current fighting games, plus another dozen old favourites
same with an FPS or RTS pro

I disagree. I'm not saying that I'm playing a glass bead game and whichever side wins I shall say "well looks like I'm going this way then!"
More that I'll be reading about some crazy sound design guy and I'll be all "man he has so mastered his craft" but then in the same interview you find out he has little harmonic theoretical knowledge under his belt and his music sucks and I lose interest. But on the flip side I'll make a song and it will be pretty solid on most elements but it's just lacking that uniqueness that would make me want to listen to it over 1000000s of other songs.

“The beauty of the fighting game community, and you should know this - it’s based around not being welcome. That’s the beauty of it. That’s the key essence of it. When you walk into an arcade for the first time, nobody likes you.”
is fucking disgusting
what are you doing right now
in this place
what is going on in this area
that's one guys opinion, and I don't agree with it.
whether or not aris was genuinely creeping or just trying to be funny in his own weird way, it seems pretty clear that he took it too far and the combination of his actions and the stress of the show got to superyan and made her miserable. this is obviously terrible, and capcom should have stepped in sooner and put a stop to it if superyan complained to them early on (I believe she did).
trying to make sweeping generalizations about how the FGC is terrible based off the actions of aris and a vocal minority of idiots in comment sections / forums is moronic, yet the gaming 'press' wants to, so they can exploit the controversy for page hits by expressing their outrage
see, now that you're deciding to bust out the jump to conclusions mat and presume conspiratorial motives behind the viewpoints people are expressing
I'm going to do it too!
fair is fair
what if, and we're going to call this my opinion, maaaaan
what if you are a person who is into competitive gaming
like i bet you're really into fighting games and MOBA-DOBAs and shit
i bet you play LoL
and so you're feeling the urge to get defensive about a community that, ostensibly, includes you?
yeah
i get the sense that might be it
y'know B:L does that too any time people criticize anime fan subcultures
I don't play Lol, and I'm not anything more than a casual fighting game player.
II never knew that saying 'press overhypes/distorts headline' for page hits/profit made me a conspiracy nut or someone with a persecution complex, but now I know.
re: munkus' experience - if you're going to take one person's personal experiences as gospel, what about sherryjenix (other female contestant on cross assault, since I assume you never watched it). my understanding is she's come out in defense of the communtiy/aris to some degree.
Is it too late for me to chime in?
My key term here is that fighting communities tend to be incredibly insular. They turn off new people that aren't part of the crowd. I'm not the only person who feels this way, many many people leave the scene because of this. Part of it is because of the attitude many FGC communities embrace: PLAY TO WIN!
Now, I play to win, that's what I do. But I don't try to become the embodiment of that. I don't run around calling people scrubs, insulting the way they play, or the character choices they have. I don't make fun of people who are outside of my social group, or try to bully people to increase my social standing. However, this is the behavior I see many, many people engaging in when I go to tourneys. Bullying for the sake of bullying! It doesn't matter if it's sexually charged or if it's toward a kid who is playing for the first time and is called a scrub, it's bullying. No, not everyone does this, and plenty don't, but enough do it and enough don't step in that it becomes the dominant behavior.
I played against an 8 year old girl in one tourney I went to. She chose a shitty character, some people watching sniggered. I chose my best character. I was winning handidly, so I let her take a stock off me and let her get some solid hits in. Afterwards I shook her hand and gave her some advice on using her character and asked her to keep practicing and to come back. The guys in the background, however, were laughing about her character choice very loudly and very loudly came up to me afterwards and said "Dude I can't believe you lost a stock to that scrub"
These were people that I hung out with, people that I generally liked. But you know how many tourneys I saw that girl come back to? Zero. You know how many times I got my non-super-into-fighting-games friends to attend local tourneys? Once. Never more.
So that's what it generally is. Not an environment where sexual harassment runs rampant, but where an insular community leads to bullying. And this incident, the bullying just happened to take the form of sexual harassment because that was the low hanging fruit. Look at Aris' defenders: "oh, he's always like that." Exactly. He's a bully.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

This. And to go further; skills transferable, but mechanics need to still be learned. You can be good at a game like Halo, but then play CS and it becomes a somewhat different ball game when you've got to start accepting the fact that an enemy can shoot through certain terrain. Then it becomes a question of knowing places that become choke points, even straight down to the timing of when and where not to walk. At least, that's how a buddy or two explained it when it came to CS.

there is no either-or, here. there is only organic and self-directed progress in the field, and a vigilance about whether you're absorbing the proper techincal and theoretical knowledge from all sides. the crazy sound design guy who doesn't know shit about harmonic theory hasn't really thought about it and just thinks the sound design wackiness he deals with is the most fucking awesome thing ever. if you have enough awareness to even consider the issue and take a step back and examine your progress in the field, and you're interested in and engaged with all the aspects that could otherwise be lacking, then i think you're ten steps ahead of Joe McWackysounds

Pro gaming was something I thought I might be interested in at some point, I'm fairly good at most FPS games either on console or PC, but I realized that it sucks all the fun out rather quickly. I have very strong beliefs about how things are "meant" to be done and it goes against the principles of winning, essentially.

Additionally, I have come to the conclusion that the portion of the League of Legends population that should not be culled from the face of humanity is statistically insignificant.
I swear it's like the scum at the bottom of 4chan's fleshlight became sentient and learned how to press QWER and click.
a lot of insular communities are pretty horrible but video games seem to be the worst
maybe it's because they tend to be technologically savvy enough to congregate and dominate online discourse
but i also think it might be because the kind of people who decide to devote themselves to mastery of trivial contests with no use outside of themselves are inherently indulgent and entitled
