OK someone over on the Avengers movie thread just posted...
a pic of Wiccan and Hulkling kissing. I'm assuming it's from the last issue of Avengers: Children's Crusade.

Scans Daily is going to have a collective heart attack when that's inevitably posted there.

Edit: Also Heinberg says on his twitter account that the last issue of Avengers: CC is coming out on March 7. Wonder if the hardcover is still coming out on March 14?

It's not like they don't refer to their relationship in every issue anyway. I think it's part of their contract.

Oh they are? I had no idea who those characters are and when I glanced up it looked like a guy and a girl.

    Huh.

    Good for them.

To be honest, I think it's good that they finally let Hulkling and Wiccan kiss on panel

It's been years and they've never done it, Marvel needed to stop pissing around with that and just show it

    Wait, really? That's insane.

Also, love that X-Babies style cover. I mean, almost every inch of it is hilarious.

    Skottie Young is fantastic.

I know he's been wrapped up in doing the Oz books, but I'd love to see him make a return to drawing superhero comics, if only for an arc or mini-series.

Young on something like Ultimate Spider-Man would be crazy fun.

That is a variant I would love to see continued through the series. It's so good, and beats anything Cheung has drawn so far in terms of promo materials or covers.

Emma knows how to fight to win, and baby Dazzler will destroy Dr. Strange.

Did you know Young and Yost/Kyle did an arc of New X-Men together?

I never read it, because that book seemed to become murder porn as soon as Yost and Kyle took it over, but it may be something you'd enjoy. I would like to see them team up for something like that now, though.

I think that, with Wolverine and the X-Men, the tone of the X-Universe has shifted enough that they could do a fun, lighthearted X-Kids story. And Young is especially well-suited to drawing the extreme body types of the various students and faculty of the X-Men universe.

Unfortunately, I think a lot of fans and retailers are still resistant to work like Young's, when it's not confined to covers. Which is ironic, because as I understand it, the only reason the Oz books continue to be made, is because they sell really well outside the direct market.

Dude I own it. That's why I know it would be the best thing ever.

The two issues following that arc were also Young-drawn and it was in fact a light hearted story (except for some relationship drama in the second part) and is probably my favorite part of the series, especially considering everything pre-Kyle/Yost was just the blandest, most boring bullshit imaginable.

Oh man, the Skottie Young arc on New X-Men was set in Hell and featured Rockslide getting killed and Anole getting his arm cut off. It still looked cool as hell, but the art wasn't a great fit for the content.

Rockslide being made out of brimstone was fantastic though

He didn't get killed! There was no implication he was dead.

Prodigy getting his heart ripped out was too much though.

So New Avengers and Avengers made the HAMMER War arc a little more tolerable today:
The President turned down HYDRA's offer to take over SHIELD/The Avengers role in the world because duh they are insane.

Cap apparently saw this all coming sometime and laid down steps to prevent it, namely Victoria Hand as a triple agent within Osborn's cell and Skaar being a double Agent on the new Dark Avengers. New Avengers ends with Skaar smashing the crap out of the rest of his team yelling AVENGERS ASSEMBLE.

I've really been digging HAMMER war, although it could've been compressed by a couple issues. In each book.

It would've made one nice, 250 pageish trade, instead of a 170 page trade and a separate 190 page trade.

So in the preview of Avengers: CC issue 9 that's FINALLY coming out next week...
Iron Lad says he can save Cassie but gets into a fight with Vision.

OK this maxiseries started in July 2010 and takes place right after Siege but before most every other storyline from late 2010 till now. Is that about right?

Good to hear. I honestly really dug the idea of Hammer and Osborn as an Avengers enemy and was really bummed out by this arc.

I didn't get to follow the actual Dark Avengers books in real time.

To go against the recent talk about creative teams being stable and quality over quantity, Young Avengers really would have benefited from not having Heinberg and Cheung be the ones to go to for a YA run, mostly Heinberg though (Cheung is just a slow artist).

Young Avengers #1 debuted in April 2005, and since then we've had 12 issues, an annual, a string of character one shots, a Civil War and Secret Invasion tie-in, and now this 9 issue mini plus a special. A really good concept that took people by surprise when it came out and has kind of been fumbled since that first story arc, especially in terms of timeliness, mostly because Marvel wanted to allow Heinberg to write the book.

On the other hand, every time someone else used the characters, the results were pretty shitty, even with talented creators like Brubaker and Cornell writing them.

    So, I dunno.

It's a bummer to see the concepts left fallow for so long, before finally being revived for the comic book equivalent of a reunion tour, but I'm not sure anyone else had any great ideas for the property, either.

It's like someone at Marvel heeded the cautionary tale of the Runaways. After Brian Vaughan left, the series was passed around by a variety of artists and writers, none of whom ever really reproduced Vaughan and Alphona's (and Miyazawa's) magic formula. Sure there was a good story here and there, but would anything have really been lost by putting those characters aside for a while?

Honestly, I'm not even sure what to do with the Young Avengers. After you reveal all their nifty secret ties to various points of Marvel history, they're just another generic teenage superteam.

Which is probably why Children's Crusade is still banging the Avengers: Disassembled drum. It's the easiest way to make those characters important and relevant.

I quite like that costume, actually

But the anatomy seems somewhat off in places. That left arm, for example, it looks weirdly shaped.

But yeah, it looks cool. Maybe some sort of digital Iron Man? Or perhaps hard-light tech?
