I liked the actual shoegaze trend better, the one from the late 80s and 90s. Catherine Wheel, Lush, Slowdive, Cocteau Twins, Curve, Swervedriver, My Bloody Valentine etc. I still listen to a lot of these on a regular basis.
The new Sigh is pretty solid, sort of a creative retread of their Scenario IV and Imaginary Sonicscape period. A mix of the goofy and serious.
Really enjoying the new Heidevolk. We'll see whether it lasts.
I've noticed that, with enjoyable metal albums, they'll initially repel me for anywhere from a couple days to several months, then grow on me. Is this a thing?

Listening to some Testament on the bus ride home from work, remembered they have a new album coming out in (I think) May. So fucking stoked for that. If it's anything close to Formation of Damnation I will be happy. Gene Hoglan on drums too. Uuuuunnnnnf.
MM: How are things going with "The Dark Roots of Earth"? Where do things stand production wise? When can we expect it out and what touring plans do you all have to support it?
Eric: It was supposed to be out in late April but may be in May, hopefully. Andy Sneap is going to produce. We almost didn't get it done but he stepped up. There were a lot of things left undone that Andy knew and we didn't feel right throwing it at Zeuss who had a great mix set up; maybe we can do something with him in the future. It's gonna be our heaviest record and we have a ballad called "Cold Embrace" on the new album which we haven't had since the Low album. We have songs on this album that have blast beats in the choruses with melodic vocals…very Dimmu Borgir/Emperor blast beats with Testament riffs with Chuck doing "Practice What You Preach" style vocals. "True American Hate" may be the fastest song we have ever done. "Dark Roots of Earth" which is the title track, sounds like "The Thing That Should Not Be" by Metallica and "Sign of the Southern Cross" by Black Sabbath. There are lots of different textures, not mediocre, every song has its own trip. "Throne of Thorns" is an 8 minute epic, one of my favorite tracks off the new album…kind of like "Hole in the Sky" by Black Sabbath. Lots of crazy middle sections that go into this weird jam that is just really cool. Also for me, I usually do leads. I did 30 percent of the leads on "Formation" but it's close to 50 percent on this album. Chuck is singing well and I think old fans are gonna love it. Hopefully, a lot of new people will jump on board as well.
Pretty mediocre, but at least his voice still sounds good. Same basic riff patterns he's used before and the lead-up to the chorus sounds like it's about to go into "Freewind Rider" or any of a number of the previous songs. It's even called "Riding on the Tide"...

It's unfortunate that they've recognised that their target market are the mouthbreating neanderthals who actually throw punches in mosh pits and instead of trying to dissuade that, they actively encourage it.

Well, they are those same neanderthals so why would they try to discourage it?
Oy, Tav, you made me choke on a mouthful of chocolate pieces with that. I can't tell if it's $40 for a show or the gloves, but either way it makes me want to capitalize on the machismo cult insecurities of hardcore.
New Ignivomous is decent if you're into that modern take on the cavernous Incantation style that is all the rage. That said, I like it less than their debut which for me was more dark and powerful.
New Cannibal Corpse is very consistent, I wouldn't say it was better than the past few but it keeps the attention headbanging.
Got promos for the new Outcast, Weregoat, Fisthammer, and Nunslaughter debut re-issue that I'll try and cover this week, plus some more local New England black metal.

I saw 'em in a sold out 200 capacity venue when they were touring The Way Of All Flesh about three years ago and it was a fantastic show. Easily one of the best I've been to. Pining to see them again, but their European tour with Metallica doesn't seem to be coming here

That sounds like an awesome show to see. It still blows my mind to see them as openers and bottom of the flyer for festivals. I think they are very underrated.
If anyone gets a chance, check out and support Infera Bruo, a local Boston black metal band who favor the more progressive, atmospheric sound with clean and harsh vocals. If you're into that, of course. Really fantastic band, the debut is of the best I've heard from here in many years.
Couple new bands you guys might want to check out (though be warned, totally different from one another):
Weregoat: total evil old school death from Portland, can hear everything from the cavern core 90s style to the Canadian savages like Blasphemy to the old Swedish style and some death/doom. This is pretty goddamn sick and fun.
Desultor: Swedish band combining black/death/extreme metal with cleaner singing that reminds a little of Nevermore, Tad Morose, Candlemass and various others. I'm surprised more bands don't try this. Expect it to be pretty huge.

Shit, Desultor is cool. Too bad about their album cover.

I get the feeling he's going to figure things out when he gets more band members or focuses on one style. Sunesu Cavalry has some good stuff on it but it's just kind of uncomfortable. The metal could stand on its own, while the Mongolian aspects would feel less gimmicky (and goofy) in a more atmospheric folk project like Uaral or Moonsorrow. Mantra's acoustic work is real nice, though.
I can really only get into their first full-length because I find all the albums that came aftewards are so over-the-top in terms of the synth and vocals that I find they descend into black metal Rhapsody territory.
tl;dr I AM THE NO-FUN POLICE.

Testament new album, woo. Also new Overkill and Kreator soon enough. The new Kreator album cover is pretty funny.
In today's news, Soulfly are releasing an album in tribute to the Norwegian masters of progressive black metal.
How do you mosh with boxing gloves on?

I am attempting to learn this song on drums... I am planning on hurting for awhile.
But damn do they put on a good show, I really need to see them live sometime.

Fun debut, makes me think of a blackened Hammers of Misfortune.

Might as well go for one more if I'm taking up this much space.

Pretty classy. The nostalgic drum sound is a great touch.
