This is a popular refrain in certain circles but in many ways it's not actually true.
ME1 is better plotted than ME2. There is a central mystery that is gradually revealed through a series of interlocking steps, builds to a shocking reveal, then speeds to an exciting climax. ME2, by contrast, has a simple main plot that exists largely as an excuse to provide a tour of the galaxy and a showcase of the characters you meet along the way.
Plotting is great. Plotting is a nice thing to be able to do. But too many people on the internet think it's all writing is, because plotting is an essentially mechanical action and is thus easily grasped by essentially mechanical people. There's also characterization, theme, and tone, and in all of those ME2 is at least as good as the first one and often better.
People who talk about how ME1 is better, for instance, tend not to mention
how Shepard yells like a crazy person about his visions despite the fact that the beacon's little Tool video never shows you, the player, anything at all. The main character is passionately convinced about something that I, Jacob, am not. That was disconcerting and kind of alienating at first! They tend to forget how he acts like a space hick, constantly asking people questions about things he should already know and yelling at random VIs like they're people.
They don't bring up how the game keeps telling us that Udina is a crafty politician who is committed to earning recognition for Earth, when it actually seems like he's a weird shouty asshole who accomplishes nothing.
There's the slack pacing on the Citadel, and some of the completely bizarre things that happen there. Weirded out by the Consort's gift? Have a sex scene!
Those aren't capital crimes. ME1 is a great and thoughtful game, and was my favorite thing ever until ME2 came along. But the weirdly unquestioned meme that it's better-written grinds my teeth.
it's not better written
but as a story, it is far superior
ME2 basically has none
what it does have is... good writing and a story made to contain it
After ME3 futuristic stuff wasn't the thing and I wasn't feeling fantasy so bolt action rifles and ruined 1900s-1930s russian architecture hit just the right spot

I played the older RO games but I heard RO2 was not so good.
I've had SC4 deluxe for ages since I got it on sale from steam but have never really figured it out. I really should.
The biggest difference is you can micromanage the funding on civic and utility buildings which is required in order to balance the budget.
you know where I can find info on the area of effect (if that is how it works) of things? Eg: how far is a police station effective? How close do things need to be to roads? etc...
The area of effect for those types of buildings is entirely dependent on your funding. Changing the funding will change the circle that denotes their range.
Also I haven't been using any guides. Building industry 4 away from the road works but commercial and residential usually only goes 3 away.
I've basically been using the knowledge I've learned from 2000.

oh?
It's quite fun. Has one of the best cover systems I've seen. Also it's pretty.
what? RO2's cover system will get you killed most often, whether by just popping you in a bad place, or being put into cover when you're trying to apply a bandage.

You've clearly never met a real life Marine if you think that's strange.

Second thing has never happened to me.
And I don't use it that much, because I don't need to - most of the time it's better not to sticky cover.
But when at a window and it's too crowded to stand back from it, it's gold.
I wanna get the mauser up to the level where I get a bayonet. Not that I ever really find myself in the need of one, but I just like the look of the kar98k with a bayonet.

I'M ON A SHOW WITHIN A SHOW!
MY NAME IS TRACY MORGAN!
Time to burn my record collection.
I love Megadeth but Dave is not a smart man by any means.

Also, I love encountering the classic advice for shopping for vinyl to look for samples
"The likelihood of finding a good sample is directly related to the number of afros on the cover."
The last time my hair looked great was in december 2010
I played the older RO games but I heard RO2 was not so good.
I'm just gonna let everything roll off my back. No more stress.
No, Drez! Half-assed nihilism is never the answer!

My condolences.
I would make you all jealous of my gorgeous hair but I'm going to sleep momentarily instead of camwhoring.
It's better than getting angry all the time over dumbshit people and their dumbshit dumbshittery.
