I'm sure the book explained it more, but what is the backstory with Elizabeth Banks', Woody Harrelson's and Lenny Kravitz's characters? They were all pretty interesting but I could tell they were pretty neutered in the movie. Also, what's the deal with sponsors?

Elizabeth Banks' character is called Effie Trinket.
She is basically District 12's ambassador to the Capital. Each district has its own small government (in the book you only read about a Mayor who is a district local and only slightly less poverty stricken than the general inhabitants) but Effie lives and works in the Capital and is the reader's introduction to the excess of the Capital in her ridiculous outfits and hairstyles and accent.

    Woody's character is called Haymitch.
He was a District 12 native and the only person from 12 who ever won a Hunger Games. The tributes from each district are assigned a Mentor, a native of their district who has won the games in the past. Since he's not really athletic or strong, Katniss and Peeta figure he won by outsmarting everyone. The other districts had multiple mentors to choose from, but since Haymitch was 12's only winner, he is the Mentor every year. Year after year of training scared teenagers and then watching them die has driven him to severe alcoholism. Peeta and Katniss are the first real contenders he's seen in a long time and it kind of snaps him out of it.

Lenny Kravitz's character is called Cinna.
He's Katniss's Stylist. Every tribute gets a stylist to gussy them up for their public appearances and to help them fit in more in the capital. Cinna is presented as a really unusual stylist because he's young, he's not as garish and over the top as most capital locals, and most importantly, he's empathetic to Katniss. He is her principal calming agent while she's in the Capital.

The games are a really popular method of gambling in the Captial and viewers are allowed to send gifts to the tributes they're betting on. These are the sponsors. The advantage isn't all that great because the cost of these gifts is astronomical. The cost also goes up the longer the games have progressed. In the book, Katniss explains that the cost of something big like a sword or a week's worth of rations on day one would barely buy a small post of broth on day 7. The tribute's Mentor (Haymitch) is responsible for securing sponsors and choosing how to spend their money.

Am I the only one who, when reading books, doesnt really consider what characters look like that much?

Say Harry Potter, I didn't really consider that the Patel sisters were Indian until I saw them and went, huh, that makes sense.

I was a bit annoyed by all the deus ex machina stuff in the story. The tracker jackers thing, and the healing salve all sort of came out of nowhere.

    hahahahaha

That was... kinda the point? Did you go to the bathroom during this part?

No? I know that's what literally happened in the movie, but I think "then suddenly, exactly what she needed just happened to be right there" is a bit of lazy writing, even if it makes sense within the context of the story.

I liked the movie, just thought that part was a tad lazy.

Well in the case of the healing salve
Yes it was literally a dues ex machina. It was exactly what she needed at that moment coming out of the sky. That is why sponsers are such a big deal. That is basically the job of their mentor, to find the money to send them exactly what they need when they need it.

Yeah, unless they book makes a point of describing their appearance I don't think a whole lot about it.

It is also worth noting that she's appointed "Ambassador" by the Capital, not by the people in the District, a fact that she laments more than once. She hopes that she'll get a better District the next time around.

    yeah that's true

Effie's kind of a dumb bitch

  • FirmSkaterFirmSkater Registered User regular
Emphasis on the dumb part. Effie is supposed to be a typical citizen of the Capitol. She sees the games as actual games, and doesn't understand why everyone is always so grumpy about it.

I see characters more as ideas I suppose. I seem to be more interested in what they are doing and what they are thinking rather than exactly what they look like.

Patel is a super-common Indian last name, so I always thought that. Same with Seamus Finnigan being Irish. I mean, that is an Irish-ass name.

Thanks to #pipe for clarifying about the sponsors! I know Haymitch was D12's only winner, but I just kept thinking that if Districts 1 and 2 were as badass as they claim and they win "almost every time" and they are at 74 games, there'd have to be at least one or two districts that didn't have any winners, right?

But I guess they all had at least one.

    EDIT: Two, apparently!

It's implied that there are more than a few bumfuck districts.

it's fairly explicit in the first book that the agricultural district (where Rue and the other kid I never cared about were from) was also extremely poor

    which is why
all they can send her after Rue's death is a single loaf of bread, as that's all that all of their remaining sponsorship money could buy

Sometimes I bring a box of cookies into my room and play the "how long will it take before I eat this entire box?" game.

The game doesn't last very long.

yeah I dunno, if the hunger games were just "who goes the longest before eating" and you could still drink water and stuff and smoke cigarettes

    I'd probably win

I just never get the urge to eat, really, and then I have to like, remind myself and then I'll eat something

    I don't know why I'm such a chubber

You could totally drink stuff in that game, that's not eating!

as long as it's not like, broth, just actual drinks

I haven't read the books, but
the part where Katniss got too close to the edge of the arena and the control room guy's solution to "turn her around" is to set the fucking forest on fire was pretty great.

That's where the movie basically turned into not only The Running Man, but The Running Man plus The Truman Show.
