In this country being financially ruined can be worse than being dead. It takes a toll on your family, ability to buy a house, ability to find a job, ability for your children to go to school or where they go.

When I got beaten in the head with a tire iron, even though I knew I almost certainly had a concussion, and knew that there was a very real possibility of dying, I elected not to go to the hospital.
Because while I knew I might die if I didn't go to the hospital, I knew that going to the hospital meant guaranteed financial ruin (I didn't have insurance at the time). And if you have a family and are living paycheck to paycheck, frequently being dead is better than financial ruin, especially in this country.

in israel whether or not you were jewish there was a suite of holidays that had consistent themes- forgiveness, celebration, solemnity, blah blah. you got the feeling that this day was designated for X- and almost everyone in your country had the same experience as you that day.

I just recall issues of overutilization, combined with weak controls on what might be deemed medically necessary, so doctors could order diagnostics or procedures at zero or low copay despite them not being strictly necessary, and this was identified as a driver of France's high per-capita spending (most of which is funded through taxes).
I'm a little hazy on the details. The take-away I got from what I read was that France needs to be more aggressive about requiring copays and more restrictive about denying public funding for unnecessary services.

Good times, perfect time of year for each and they are not infected with the scourge of Christianity.
And growing up in the middle of several reservations, the 4th was total chaos every year. I am shocked that I have all my fingers. And toes. And eyes. I have been shot with so many bottle rockets.
In fact my first full beard I had to shave off in the summer after 9th grade because I lit it on fire in a fireworks accident. It was good times.
